I read somewhere that the average lifespan of a civilization is about 250 years. Is that true? :dread:

US diplomacy is gaining results, says Mattis

US Defence Secretary James Mattis has said America still hopes to solve the North Korea crisis using diplomacy.

After days of fiery rhetoric from both the US and North Korea, Mr Mattis said war would be "catastrophic" and that diplomacy was gaining results.

On Friday, North Korea's official KCNA news agency said President Donald Trump was "driving" the Korean peninsula to the "brink of a nuclear war".

Pyongyang is finalising a plan to fire missiles near the US territory of Guam.

The KCNA report comes after Mr Trump said that North Korea should be "very, very nervous" if it acted against the US.

He said the regime would be in trouble "like few nations have ever been" if they do not "get their act together".

The KCNA report accuses Washington of a "criminal attempt to impose nuclear disaster upon the Korean nation" and making "desperate efforts" to test weapons in the Korean peninsula.

The US is "the mastermind of nuclear threat, the heinous nuclear war fanatic", the report said.

Sen. Lindsey Graham said he had discussions with Trump about North Korea and described the president as "deadly serious. Very curious."

"I think he's made a decision long ago, quite frankly, to try to negotiate the threat with North Korea. ... But if negotiations fail, he is willing to abandon strategic patience and use pre-emption," he said.

"I think he’s there mentally," Graham added. "He has told me this."

Trump: 'I'm doing the military a great favor' by banning transgender troops

President Donald Trump on Thursday defended his controversial ban on transgender troops serving in the military, saying he's doing them "a favor" despite a flood of criticism for the policy change.

"It's been a very difficult situation, and I think I'm doing a lot of people a favor by coming out and just saying it," Trump said while on a working vacation at his golf club in New Jersey. "As you know, it's been a very complicated issue for the military. It's been a very confusing issue for the military, and I think I'm doing the military a great favor."

Pentagon officials have said they would not implement the change until receiving clearer instructions from the White House, but five transgender members of the military have already sued over it.

Despite backlash from the LGBT community, Trump claimed he got support from those groups during the 2016 presidential election.

"I have great respect for the community. I think I've had great support, or I've had great support from that community," Trump said Thursday. "I got a lot of votes. But the transgender, the military's working on it now."

True enough, but then, how many civilizations didn't last that long? I only read that it was an average lifespan, anyway - obviously it's not a use by date.

Trump has just dropped the news, out of nowhere, that he might be considering using a military option in Venezuela.

I think he's realised his mistake in trying to start a deflective war against a potential nuclear enemy that can trigger armageddon. Gotta pick the right battles.

I can guarantee people will claim this is all a set-up by liberals and that the conservatives are the victims.
They have this amazing capacity for delusion that liberals always equals bad and the conservatives always need to clean up the mess there's no way to even argue that both sides have good and bad points to them liberalism is always a disaster.
