Secret Service depletes funds to pay agents because of Trump's frequent travel, large family

The Secret Service can no longer pay hundreds of agents it needs to carry out an expanded protective mission – in large part due to the sheer size of President Trump's family and efforts necessary to secure their multiple residences up and down the East Coast.

Secret Service Director Randolph "Tex'' Alles, in an interview with USA TODAY, said more than 1,000 agents have already hit the federally mandated caps for salary and overtime allowances that were meant to last the entire year.

The agency has faced a crushing workload since the height of the contentious election season, and it has not relented in the first seven months of the administration. Agents must protect Trump – who has traveled almost every weekend to his properties in Florida, New Jersey and Virginia – and his adult children whose business trips and vacations have taken them across the country and overseas.

"The president has a large family, and our responsibility is required in law,'' Alles said. "I can't change that. I have no flexibility.''

Alles said the service is grappling with an unprecedented number of White House protectees. Under Trump, 42 people have protection, a number that includes 18 members of his family. That's up from 31 during the Obama administration.

Overwork and constant travel have also been driving a recent exodus from the Secret Service ranks, yet without congressional intervention to provide additional funding, Alles will not even be able to pay agents for the work they have already done.

The compensation crunch is so serious that the director has begun discussions with key lawmakers to raise the combined salary and overtime cap for agents, from $160,000 per year to $187,000 for at least the duration of Trump's first term.

But even if such a proposal was approved, about 130 veteran agents would not be fully compensated for hundreds of hours already amassed, according to the agency.

There should be rules about stuff like that.
The President shouldn't be allowed to just waste money on such a scale and be completely immune from criticism while claiming the country is bankrupt and needs to make vast cuts. It simply wouldn't be acceptable in Europe for a leader to do so and they wouldn't even try.
I can't imagine the outrage if a Prime Minister decided to start visiting expensive golf clubs every few weeks and expecting the armed forces and police to lock them down just because they think Number 10 is a dump.

That you have US conservatives who are supposed to despise government waste defending him is also highly odd as can they really not see the total and obvious hypocrisy?

Exactly. Even our most extravagant MPs swindling would still be viewed as laughable in the US.

It's a disgusting thing to do to somebody. I'm not really sure why you are trying to point out anti-fascist/left wing violence like this though.

Murder and violence from right wing groups in the US dwarfs all other domestic extremists, if we are listing everything then we'll be be here a long time before we get to any antifa stuff.

Over the past 10 years (2007-2016), domestic extremists of all kinds have killed at least 372 people in the United States. Of those deaths, approximately 74% were at the hands of right-wing extremists, about 24% of the victims were killed by domestic Islamic extremists, and the remainder were killed by left-wing extremists.

I also hear from multiple sources that Secret Service agents are at the end of their rope, sick of being treated like servants by Trump.

Specifically, I've been told Trump doesn't respect their hours & shifts, and expects agents to fetch things for him. Both damaging morale.

Source: "Clinton treated USSS agents like friends. Bush treated them with great respect. Obama, like family. Trump treats them like servants."

1) My post was supposed to be more a continuation of the "what in the world is going on" idea from your post at the top of the page with the furries, no need to get defensive

2) It was also supposed to illustrate how the whole idea of it's ok to punch a Nazi thing that has been brought up here in the thread is stupid.

1) My post was about furries, not getting stabby over haircuts. My post was a continuation on your theme of there being no Nazis in Boston (which you ignored the evidence I posted from your own link) which you followed up with a story about somebody being stabbed by an anti-fascist arsehole.

2) Punching Nazis is fine. Just make sure you double check they are a Nazi and don't stab them.

Piers Morgan should be on the list surely.

I'm not sure I agree with the "if they're a Nazi then it's ok to punch them" line of reasoning. Setting a precedent for assaulting someone for expressing their beliefs is a very slippery slide. If they're doing it peacefully then they should be left alone and protested against peacefully. If they're being violent in epxressing their beliefs then sure have at them (but be prepared to also face prosecution, as they should as well). Using violence never helps bring the opposite side round, it only further entrenches their views and makes them a victim.
