The only solution is to fully ban guns. I don't see any form of gun control working. The anti-gun lobby need to be pushing for it and holding civil rights style protests.

Over here we allow people to have shotguns and stuff for pigeon shoots and even then we tend to get a massacre every decade or so. Guns should be banned full stop, no exceptions.

I 100% agree, but I also know that politically the USA are never going to just suddenly ban all guns. They are too protective of their guns to ever go for a total gun ban and there is too much money being handed over by the likes of the NRA.

It would need to happen in stages and over quite a long time. Start with limiting the capacity of magazines and far more stringent mental health/criminal checks. Then ban semi-automatic weapons. Then ban the sale of ammunition from supermarkets and only allow its sale through specialist, regulated and inspected gun stores. Then bring in proper licences for owning guns. Then limit how much ammunition people can buy from specialist gun stores.

Slowly slowly slowly you can start to reduce the numbers of guns out there, sure lots of people will die in the meantime, but it will eventually mean far less guns and ammunition out there amongst the general public.

I think one problem is, once bans start coming in you will see a trend of panic buying and then a push to buy the next best thing. I think it will take 1950s/1960s style cultural movement to break the influence of NRA dollars on politicians and get a proper repeal of the 2nd amendment.

When gun laws are brought in, or there is a fear on the right that the government are coming for their guns, it actually increases sales. So I'd rather they just pushed ahead with the ban.

But I do think you are right, this is going to go the softly softly approach. Its just sad that will mean a lot more massacres to come.

Maybe, but if it was done slowly and softly enough then it shouldn’t result in too much panic buying.

When gun laws are brought in, or there is a fear on the right that the government are coming for their guns, it actually increases sales. So I'd rather they just pushed ahead with the ban.

I agree, just getting rid of them would be the best solution. A lot of people would hand in their weapons once they were illegal. Some people wouldn’t, but they would gradually become less important as time went on, their ammunition would run low and there would be nowhere (legal and easy) to buy more. The police would confiscate any weapons/ammunition that they ever find. Etc.

But, the political situation of the USA will mean that that never happens. They didn’t care when 6 years old were murdered in Sandy Hook, they are not going to give a gooseberry fool about a few 16 year olds dying.

But I do think you are right, this is going to go the softly softly approach. Its just sad that will mean a lot more massacres to come.

Oh we have a hell of a lot more massacres to look forward to. They are not even doing the slowly/softly approach but going full steam ahead with weapons for everyone. The President is even calling for teachers to be armed.

They might learn one day, but that day is a long long way into the future.

The main problem with trying to ban all guns in the US is that you have a section of society who will actually kill anyone who tries to do so.
They will keep the guns at home and force a situation where a policeman will be forced to go and try and take them and a standoff will happen and the gooseberry fool will then hit the fan.
For those people guns are a sacred item and they won't give them up no matter how many new laws are passed as they will just shout "second amendment" as if that somehow matters more than anything else.

If I were a fiction writer, I'd write a story about a group of anti-gun people who kidnap the children of all of the Senators and Congressmen and NRA lobbyists, stick them in a single school and then threaten to shoot them all if the politicians don't agree to rescind the 2nd amendment. They could even make it into a film.

While that is true, the people that would actually go that far (and not just say that is what they would do) is rather small. And they would be no loss if a SWAT team took them out.

A lot of people would keep their guns if they were banned, but their numbers would gradually dwindle and their weapons would slowly be put out of circulation. How long does ammo last in storage? Ammunition manufacturers suggest around 10 years, even if they are massively out, you would still have a situation where the majority of the ammo was gone within 20 years and with no easy, cheap or legal way to buy any more.

As I said before, I don’t think the US government is going to change the gun laws any time soon, the Republican party is pretty much owned by the NRA and they are not likely to change. But it could be done.

Thanks Monkey Man. I actually think Rubio handled that pretty well, but then he is a professional politician so you'd expect him to be able to come up with answers.

You'd see open rebellion by any number of militias, probably half the Deep South would push to secede, and cartels struggling with marijuana legalization will suddenly find themselves with a whole new revenue stream from gun smuggling.

A 60s/70s style movement could very well work, indeed it may be the only real solution to the immediate problem of mass firearm availability, but out of the gate calling for bans on all guns is only going to inflame tensions. Edit: We need an MLK Jr. type figure, perhaps lots of them. They'd be targets for gun nuts and the NRA's paid thugs, but they'd be a real asset.

Also, we must recognize that gun crime has many societal causes, deep socioeconomic roots. You won't solve the real problem until you dig deeper than this particular symptom.

I've seen Rubio getting a lot of praise for turning up to the town hall when his colleagues didn't. It's literally his strawberry floating job to show up. Just because his fellow NRA funded delegates were too chickenshit does not mean this guy gets a pass.

Also, on how much he was "considering" altered his stance of magazine capacity et al:

Not going to happen.

Yep, you have groups who would rather help start a civil war than give up guns.
The odd thing is that those people have some odd theory that civilians with guns would actually stand a chance against the US armed forces. They have this idea that the US armed forces would refuse to fire on them or they would just be able to somehow overpower the armed forces through sheer numbers as if they hadn't thought of that tactic and honestly think they can somehow win. Yes, they would have some pretty tooled up compounds with guns all over the place but that's not very helpful when the opposition has Apache's and F-35's or F-16's.

I really wish those people would be allowed to just buy a state and evacuate all the sane people and just live in the gun filled and government free hellhole they desire. Maybe they could call it "True Freedom Land".
