Surely this has to hurt the republicans in the Mid-terms and if it doesn't they may as well go completely insane as it seems it doesn't matter how terrible they are people will vote for them anyway. Just the sheer number of people resigning and being fired should tell them this isn't a great administration.

Sadly Trump's popularity rating has been climbing. He's now in the 40s having been at 36 in December. Plus the generic ballet between Dems and GOP has tightened. It's still at 7.5%, but with gerrymandering that means it's too close to call in the house .

All that said, November is a very long time away with Trump. So who knows!

On the Rachel Brand quitting story, just seen something very interesting. She's going to Walmart, which is probably good for money, but usually ambitious attorneys at the DOJ stay put in case they move up the ranks. Anyway, she might have another reason to jump ship:

I've completely lost the thread of what's happening in Trumptown - there's so much stuff flying about (just scrolling down this single page is a minefield!), can anyone provide a very brief bullet point summary of why he isn't in jail yet?

Unfortunately Trump also has the backing of Fox News who will gladly polish any turd that floats their way from Trump and Fox and Friends who make a gaggle of lovestruck schoolgirls look fair and balanced "They may as well do a whole morning show about why Trump is the hunkiest World leader of all time by this point" and that's where a large chunk of Americans get their news.

From the outside looking in it's quite clear Trump is a buffoon who's eroding US norms like the rule of law every time he criticises judges and the FBI or the freedom of the press by constantly calling them unAmerican but many on the inside don't get the whole picture and just get told about the few things he's had success with.

If any of us were as incompetent at our job as he is we'd have been fired months ago and the company would likely hold a party at our departure because they have so many less disasters to deal with now. All the next President has to do is be a standard world leader and they're going to look like statesman of the century compared to Trump.
Maybe they could start by not randomly attacking long standing allies for no reason and not expecting a free country like the UK to completely illegally ban protests just because he's a thin skinned arse.

I think a large part of the american ideals are rhetoric. Very few Americans actually believe in 'freedom', they just want to be free to do the things they want. If Trump managed to gain control of the control and install some kind of militarily dictatorship, most of the GOP would be super happy. It would be the same if the Dem's took over.

It always amuses me the outcry that republicans have at the idea of atheism. I remember Fox News doing entire segments about the fact that there were London Buses with a slogan saying "There is no God" and somehow not managing to see the irony that there are thousands of Churches in the UK and US. They went on and on about how the posters should be pulled down while at the same time being the same channel that moans like strawberry float about the war on Christmas.

Free speech only exists if you're saying something they like.

Part of the problem is the media are unable to focus on one story for more than a few cycles. That seems to be as much about pushing ratings as it is about distraction being run from the White House.

Journalists need to be really narrowing down on single issues like conflict of interest, Mar-a-Lago etc and not letting it go until the story is bottomed out.
