The generals don’t have any say in the matter though.

To order a nuclear strike, Trump only needs to key in the codes and tell them where to fire. It also requires the Secretary of Defence to enter their code, but the SoD doesn’t have a choice in the matter (they could refuse but they would be instantly replaced by somebody who would do it!).

I genuinely think that the only thing that will save us is that there is no way Trump has managed to remember any of those codes.

You would hope in that situation somebody immediately tries to enact the 25th Amendment and remove Trump from office on the grounds of mental instability.
