Starting to think there is no bottom to the well of contempt this banana split continually makes me feel for him. It's almost impressive.

For the Bristol lot, I think there is a vigil on College Green tonight. Not sure what to make of it, and Marvin Rees is apparently involved.

I can't see the alt-right taking one of their monuments to somebody or other (LOL, such ignorance...) being pulled down in North Carolina without repercussions.

The ease of which that came down though. Never ceases to amaze me the build quality of so much in the USA...from stop signs to traffic lights, fences to the houses themselves. Flimsy as gooseberry fool.

I've never understood why they decided that the best building material for houses in areas prone to severe weather was wood rather than brick.

CBS News wrote:The not-so-friendly American workplace

The American workplace is grueling, stressful and surprisingly hostile.

So concludes an in-depth study of 3,066 U.S. workers by Rand Corp., Harvard Medical School and the University of California, Los Angeles. The American Working Conditions Survey (AWCS) found "the American workplace is very physically and emotionally taxing, both for workers themselves and their families."

Among the findings:

  • Nearly one in five workers -- a share the study calls "disturbingly high" -- say they face a hostile or threatening environment at work, which can include sexual harassment and bullying. Workers who have to face customers endure a disproportionate share of abuse.
  • Nearly 55 percent say they face "unpleasant and potentially hazardous" conditions.
  • Nearly three quarters say they spend at least a fourth of their time on the job in "intense or repetitive physical" labor. "I was surprised at how physically demanding jobs were," said lead author Nicole Maestas, a Harvard Medical School economist.
  • Telecommuting is rare: 78 percent say they're required to be present in their workplace during working hours.
  • Only 38 percent say their jobs offer good prospects for advancement. And the older they get, the less optimistic they become.
  • About half say they work on their own time to meet the demands of their job.
  • More than a third of workers have no control over their schedules.
Wow -- [work] is a pretty taxing place for many people," Maestas said. "I was surprised by how pressured and hectic the workplace is." [She said, crawling out from under a rock...]

In many cases, less-educated workers endure tougher working conditions. For example, fewer than half of men without college degrees can take a break whenever they want to, compared to more than 76 percent of men with college degrees. Likewise, nearly 68 percent of men without degrees spend at least a fourth of their time moving heavy loads.

But even more educated workers are struggling with aspects of their jobs. One common complaint: A large percentage of people say they struggle to arrange time off during work hours to deal with personal or family matters.

"Time pressures at work spill over into the personal lives of many Americans," the researchers conclude, noting that roughly half of employees do some work in their free time to meet the demands of their job. "While many Americans regularly adjust their personal schedules to accommodate work matters, many are unable to adjust their work schedules to accommodate personal matters."

Maestas wonders whether toxic working conditions are keeping Americans out of the labor force. The percentage of Americans who are working or looking for work -- 62.9 percent in July -- has not returned to prerecession levels and is well below its 2000 peak of 67.3 percent.

The unemployment rate is at a 16-year low, and many employers complain they can't fill jobs. "There's a message for employers here," Maestas said. "Working conditions really do matter."

Not everything about American workplaces is grim. Workers enjoy considerable autonomy: More than 80 percent say they get to solve problems and try out their own ideas. Moreover, 58 percent say their bosses are supportive, and 56 percent say they have good friends at work.

The first-time survey of Americans ages 25-71 was carried out in 2015. It's similar to a long-running European survey, and researchers plan to conduct another survey next year and eventually to draw comparisons between U.S. and European working conditions.

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/the-not-so- ... workplace/

Will be quite interesting to read that comparison between Europe and US. Americans tend to earn more than us on average, but that isn't factoring in things like healthcare costs and hidden taxes on goods (which we have a tendency to ignore when doing price comparisons).

Cheaper and easier to repair as well as no need to be so well insulated.

President Trump told Fox News he is “seriously considering” issuing a pardon for former Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio, who was convicted last month of criminal contempt for ignoring a judge’s order to stop detaining people because he merely suspected them of being undocumented immigrants.

Trump told the news outlet during a conversation in Bedminster, N.J., that the pardon could come quickly, perhaps in a matter of days. The news outlet reported the conversation on its website Monday.

“I might do it right away, maybe early this week. I am seriously thinking about it,” Trump said, according to Fox News. He said Arpaio was a “great American patriot” who had “done a lot in the fight against illegal immigration.”

“Is there anyone in local law enforcement who has done more to crack down on illegal immigration than Sheriff Joe?” Trump said, according to Fox News. “He has protected people from crimes and saved lives. He doesn’t deserve to be treated this way.”

Arpaio, whose extreme stance and tactics on illegal immigration made him a household name, was convicted of criminal contempt last month by a federal judge in Arizona. He faces up to six months in prison at his sentencing, which is scheduled for Oct. 5. Jack Wilenchik, Arpaio’s attorney, said after Arpaio was convicted that the former sheriff would appeal to get a jury trial, and that the judge’s conclusion was “contrary to what every single witness testified in the case.”

“Joe Arpaio is in this for the long haul, and he will continue his fight to vindicate himself, to prove his innocence, and to protect the public,” Wilenchik said.

Wilenchik did not immediately respond to phone and email messages seeking comment Monday. A White House spokeswoman did not immediately answer an email seeking comment. A Justice Department spokeswoman said she was not aware of the president’s remarks but would wait until action was taken before commenting.

Arpaio told Fox News, “I would accept the pardon because I am 100 percent not guilty.”

Arpaio, 85, the former sheriff of Maricopa County, Ariz., has long been an advocate for Trump and spoke in support of him at the Republican National Convention in July. The men seem to share the same worldview when it comes to illegal immigrants and using harsh tactics against criminals or suspected criminals. Arpaio is well known in part for forcing his inmates to wear pink underwear and sleep outdoors in his Tent City Jail.

Reacting to the prospect that Trump might pardon Arpaio, ACLU Deputy Legal Director Cecillia Wang said, “President Trump would be literally pardoning Joe Arpaio’s flagrant violation of federal court orders that prohibited the illegal detention of Latinos. He would undo a conviction secured by his own career attorneys at the Justice Department. Make no mistake: This would be an official presidential endorsement of racism.”

The legal saga surrounding Arpaio dates back years. In 2011, as part of a lawsuit, the then-sheriff was enjoined by U.S. District Judge G. Murray Snow from detaining people he thought to be illegal immigrants, when they were not charged with any other crimes. Prosecutors alleged that he continued to do so, and last year, the Justice Department decided to pursue a criminal contempt-of-court case against him.

Critics said his policy of detaining people on mere suspicion was racist and illegal, and his refusal to honor a court’s order to stop was brazen. Wilenchik has said that the judge’s order enjoining Arpaio was “not clear,” and suggested that Arpaio was merely doing what others do routinely: turning over those in the country illegally to the U.S. Border Patrol.

I'm constantly amazed by Trump's ability to make the absolute worst decision in any given situation.

If he pardon's the racist law breaker, he'll open a can of worms. The GOP are finally slowly starting to make noises after his support for racists this week.

If he doesn't pardon, now he's raised it, he'll let down and piss off all his racist supporters.

Personally I think he'll do it. He wants galvanised, militant (literally) supporters. He's in it for him, not for country/party/peaceful law and order.

Should have known Murdoch would be in their somewhere again. According to the New York Times he's urging Trump to fire Bannon.

Good or evil, he's always there. Hovering about.

The problem is a certain section of US voters don't give a gooseberry fool about reality just what they themselves believe and they form reality around that.
They think Liberals are bad so bingo everything bad that's ever happened will be done by liberals. They will ignore any and all evidence that Trump is not doing a fantastic job as liberal lies and propaganda as they just can't understand that they could possibly be wrong it's impossible to counter no matter how you try so the only way to proceed is to just ignore them and move on but when a person like that is President it's just infuriating and depressing.

I've said this so many times, I don't understand how the word 'liberal' became an insult. It makes no sense.

It's funny to see places like fox news say the words "liberal elite" as a stinging insult about anyone in a university.

Christ:
President Trump's war with CNN went off the rails Tuesday morning after he retweeted an image of a Trump train running over a CNN reporter, then quickly deleted it after the meme sparked criticism as inappropriate just days after the Charlottesville violence.

Trump was in the middle of his usual morning tweetstorm when he sent the image, posted by a supporter who added “Nothing can stop the #TrumpTrain!!," to his nearly 36 million followers.

The president quickly deleted his handiwork but not before the original tweet had been retweeted hundreds of times and was captured on screen shots by journalists and activists.

I wonder if Trump then phoned up the UK government asking if Mike Holden (the guy Trump accidentally retweeted calling him a fascist) could be arrested.

Jesus Christ what is going on in that country.
