I suppose we should be pleased that he's not starting an actual war to distract us from everything else, just a trade war. :fp:

Oh no, he's saving the actual war for the impeachment proceedings, or Kushner's indictment.

US counterintelligence officials are scrutinizing one of Ivanka Trump's international business deals, according to two sources familiar with the matter.

The FBI has been looking into the negotiations and financing surrounding Trump International Hotel and Tower in Vancouver, according to a US official and a former US official. The scrutiny could be a hurdle for the first daughter as she tries to obtain a full security clearance in her role as adviser to President Donald Trump.

White House preparing for McMaster exit as early as next month

The White House is preparing to replace H.R. McMaster as national security adviser as early as next month in a move orchestrated by chief of staff John Kelly and Defense Secretary James Mattis, according to five people familiar with the discussions.

The move would be the latest in a long string of staff shakeups at the White House over the past year and comes after months of strained relations between the president and McMaster.

Trump blasted at home and abroad for plan to impose steel, aluminum tariffs

President Donald Trump's decision to impose tariffs of 25 percent on steel imports and 10 percent on aluminum reverberated across the world Thursday, spurring retaliatory threats from some of the nation’s closest allies and sending stock prices plummeting on investors’ fears of the global economic fallout.

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker called Trump's decision "a blatant intervention to protect U.S. domestic industry" under the guise of national security. He said he would submit a proposal in the next few days to hit back at the U.S.

"We will not sit idly while our industry is hit with unfair measures that put thousands of European jobs at risk,” Juncker said. “The EU will react firmly and commensurately to defend our interests."

The timing of the announcement also embarrassed Mexico and Canada, longtime allies and trading partners, which are in the midst of the seventh round of talks with the U.S. to renegotiate NAFTA.

Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland said any restrictions against Canadian steel imports would be "absolutely unacceptable." She noted that Canada, a longtime U.S. ally and trading partner, buys more American steel than any other country in the world, accounting for half of U.S. exports.

"Should restrictions be imposed on Canadian steel and aluminum products, Canada will take responsive measures to defend its trade interests and workers,” she said.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 420 points after rising more than 150 points earlier in the day. The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq both declined 1.3 percent.

Some of the harshest initial reactions came from members of Trump's own party, who have traditionally championed free trade.

Besides triggering a damaging trade war with allies, Senate Republicans expressed fear that the actions would greatly increase costs for manufacturers in other industries and undermine some of the gains of the GOP's tax overhaul. However, they said they were not certain there was any action Congress could take to prevent him from imposing the tariffs.

"Tariffs on steel and aluminum are a tax hike the American people don’t need and can’t afford," Senate Finance Chairman Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) said in a statement, urging Trump to "carefully consider all of the implications" before putting the restrictions in place.

Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.) expressed indignation, saying, "You'd expect a policy this bad from a leftist administration, not from a supposedly Republican one."

Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.), the No. 3 Republican in the Senate, expressed exasperation with Trump's decision, given that GOP lawmakers have met repeatedly with the president in recent months and warned him against imposing tariffs and taking other trade moves that could damage the economy.

"We've advised him against it, but he's convinced that it's the right thing to do," Thune said.

"I've been in meetings with him on trade and everybody's been very clear that we think that some of the decisions they're talking about making and policies they're talking about implementing would be very harmful to the economy at a time when it's really taking off," the senior Republican said.

A similar effort during the George W. Bush administration to protect steelworker jobs by imposing tariffs ended up costing more jobs in steel-consuming sectors than it saved, said Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.).

"We're a big manufacturing state, we use a lot of aluminum in beer canning, but also steel in manufacturing throughout Wisconsin, so I'm highly concerned about that move," he said.

While Trump is right to be concerned about the effect that China's excess steel and aluminum production capacity is having on world markets, "I'm just afraid this might be counterproductive," Johnson added.

In contrast, Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) applauded the move, which he called a "long overdue" response to unfair Chinese trade practices. “If we fail to stand up for steel jobs today, China will come after other jobs up and down the supply chain tomorrow," Brown said.

Steel and aluminum industry executives who attended Thursday's listening session said that no definitive decision had been made, despite Trump's announcement. Most, however, cheered the tough talk.

“We’re convinced we’ll see very quick action, definitive action, and action that’s meaningful and long lasting,” said John Ferriola, president and CEO of Nucor Corporation, one the nation's biggest steel companies. The meeting was “very productive” but short on specifics, he added.

Michael Bless, CEO of Century Aluminum, told POLITICO the meeting was a thrill. “It was a great meeting. It surpassed our expectations entirely,” he said. “We expected 30 minutes. I missed two flights that I was thrilled to miss.”

Risks job losses, higher prices, drop in consumer spending and living standards, slower growth, recession, deterioration in foreign relations - could even trigger another global recession.

Who wants to bet this is something he came up with off the cuff like the "fire and fury" thing? Something that just popped into his head that he thought sounded hardline, with zero knowledge at all of the actual consequences for even mentioning such a course of action?

WSJ: Tariffs are Trump's biggest blunder
The Wall Street Journal has generally taken a more positive view of Donald Trump’s presidency than rival newspapers (to the anger of some staff). But not on this occasion.

Today, the WSJ editorial board have roasted the president’s move on tariffs, saying it will hurt the US economy and weaken his own efforts.

Donald Trump made the biggest policy blunder of his Presidency Thursday by announcing that next week he’ll impose tariffs of 25% on imported steel and 10% on aluminum.

This tax increase will punish American workers, invite retaliation that will harm U.S. exports, divide his political coalition at home, anger allies abroad, and undermine his tax and regulatory reforms.

Electrolux puts $250m US investment on ice after tariffs
If a trade war is really breaking out, then kitchen equipment maker Electrolux has just fired another shot - by threatening to pull investment in America.

Sweden’s Electrolux, Europe’s largest home appliance maker, said on Friday it would put on hold a planned $250 million investment in the United States after President Donald Trump announced he would impose tariffs on imported aluminium and steel.

“We are putting it on hold. We believe that tariffs could cause a pretty significant increase in the price of steel on the U.S. market,” Electrolux spokesman Daniel Frykholm said.

An influential member of the European Parliament has warned that Europe must retaliate if the US imposes tariffs on steel and aluminium.

Manfred Weber, chairman of the EPP Group of centre-right MEPs, suggested that Europe would need to throw its forces into any trade war, saying:

“The US President is playing a very dangerous game. A trade dispute is to the detriment of everyone. But if Donald Trump increases tariffs on European goods for no reason, then Europe must react.

Priority must be given to protecting jobs in Europe. The EU has to show its strength.”

Markets suffer heavier losses after Trump tweet
Stock markets are falling deeper into the red, following Donald Trump’s declaration that America could easily win a trade war.

In London, the FTSE 100 is now down 73 points, or 1%, at 7101. That’s a new three-week low.

Mining companies are suffering from the prospect of protectionism - as demand for iron ore, coal, copper, oil and nickel would all weaken.

Germany’s DAX is still lurching around a six-month low.

Lukman Otunuga, research analyst at FXTM, says investors around the globe are worried:

A negative vibe lingered across financial markets on Friday, after Donald Trump’s vow to impose severe tariffs on imports of steel and aluminium sparked fears of a global trade war.

In a move that dealt a blow to global sentiment, Trump said on Thursday that the United States would set tariffs of 25% on steel imports and 10% on aluminium.

This bombshell development is likely to fuel concerns of retaliatory actions from major US trade partners consequently weighing on risk appetite. Investors are clearly jittery by the threat of a potential global trade war and its possible effect on stock markets.

Wall Street is also expected to suffer falls when it opens in three hours time.

The Dow Jones industrial average is being called down around 200 points, or 0.9%. That would add to yesterday’s 420-point tumble.

Imposing tarrifs on imports for steel is one of the few things I actually agree with Trump on, alongside his recent statement about Republicans being scared of the NRA (though Idk if this was all orchestrated or not, still true). I think steel manufacturing should be national to each country, cheapo imports are hurting local economies across the world - look at what happened recently in the UK as well

Nothing, although seems like there has been some insider trading.

I also don't see what he's said wrong regarding gun control either tbh. When Trump starts making sense, you know you're going crazy though so I have to worry...
