Seems like a fairly decent improvement to me.

They also seem to have changed his hair colour slightly.

Outrageous.

In what way do the pictures give any indication at all that this is worth bothering with?

The differences are at best minor and cosmetic and will be not much better than the last remake.
This franchise has become beyond a joke and I am confident that they will make yet another remake of this same game for next gen consoles in about 5 or 6 years and we can have this discussion again then as well if you like.

It's just a comparison of the character models running in HD vs SD. It's not really meant to be anything else. It is a HD Remaster after all, so there isn't really anything else for them to show.

I guess the filter news means they've lost the original assets, which is truly a shame.

This is only worth buying if you've never played it before, or if you are a die-hard fan. Suspect sales among both groups will still be low.

Comparing the two the Remaster looks like a decent improvement...not quite sure what there is to explain.

Remember when they revealed the Resi 4 PS3/360 port and deliberately photoshopped the screenshots of the PS2/GC version to make it look gooseberry fool on their official website?

Yeah that killed it for me, I prefer to play games in original resolution than some horrible soft filter thing like some emulators use. It just looks blurry, like some weird impressionist oil painting, which it was not. Changes the art style of the game imo, making the HD models pop out.

Applying a sharpness filter, turning up the contrast and lowering the brightness clearly can't be considered 'a decent improvement'. If we're talking all new textures, 60fps then yes you may have something but you don't.

Seriously, if they remade this, Zero and actually started working on Resident Evil 2 properly - as in pre-rendered backdrops that used the full power of the PS4 and Xbox One, you'd be looking at something so realistic looking it would be strawberry floating amazing.

I get frustrated at these waisted opportunities.

The backgrounds are all pre-rendered in RE though right, its not a simple case of putting new textures on the models.

Surely being 'pre-rendered' the 'power' of the machines is irrelevant. Access to all that nice fast RAM might be of use, but the rendering power of the consoles themselves would be wasted.

It would be even easier than that if they still had the original assets, as they wouldn't even need new textures. The problem appears to be that they don't have those, so have to work from the GC base and hope for the best. That's also likely a factor in why it's 30fps, since they've only got the backgrounds created for the framerate.

It plays less of a part but they wouldn't be wasted, especially if it went entirely into particle effects, character models, dynamic shadows etc. Pre-rendered environments are also a bit more involved than *just* slapping a picture on the screen, as evidenced by the fact the current gen versions aren't able to run at 1080p.

The original remake for Gamecube was a pure labour of love by the artists/developers, it still looks amazing today. This is just pissing around with those assets to re-release the game for new consoles and make some easy money. Who knows why they can't re-render the backgrounds for 1080p & widescreen, it's been over a decade since REmake and the software/data will probably be long out of date (or lost?)
