I usually hate shoot em ups but love Resogun. Any other similar games I should take a look at?

Super Stardust Ultra. It's made by the same people.

They've made a lot of arcade shmups over the years. They're all very good.

Apologies if it isn't close enough to Resogun for your liking, but Nex Machina is another game by the same dev and it was probably their most well received game to date. It's a top-down, twin-stick shmup.

Side-scroll shmups on PS4: Jamestown; DARIUSBURST Chronicle Saviours; Caladrius Blaze; Sky Force Reloaded (currently on sale for £3.29), er... Geometry Wars 3?

Did you buy the Resogun season pass? You should if you haven't as it's cheap but adds a variety of other play modes. Demolition being my personal favourite.

I went for sky force as the others were quite expensive. I want super stardust but I would have hoped with it being so old it would be less than a fiver. 10 quid might not be much to some but I ain't exactly rich.

I've given SS so many attempts to win me over, over so many years and different consoles, and yet it's never once clicked with me. Imo, Resogun is on a whole other level to it.

Not heard of Sky Force Reloaded until this thread - looks interesting, an nice looking update of a retro style shooter!

How are you getting on with it? I read in a review you have one life and no continues - does this make the game impossibly hard?
How long does a level last roughly?

I haven't got very far due to starting out with a pea shooter for a gun.

Decided to give this a shot. Despite the slow start it's very satisfying as you upgrade and go back to a level that you took forever to beat, and smash it.

Peashooter is an apt description of the first few attempts, though

Can you buy extra lives and continues or is the game just a total wank bag?

I don't know what this means!

Basically, one life per level - but you gather 'stars' to then power up your shield, firepower, side cannons, laser, smart bomb, and magnetism (to attract the stars)

You end up learning the levels to maximise upgrade potential, there's medals for achieving various objectives, which act as multipliers, more stuff unlocks as you go.
Move onto the next level, get destroyed, build up, eventually overcome etc. The levels are about 2-3 mins long so not really a hardship to die.

If you don't enjoy playing the same level a few times, and leveling up, it's probably not going to be your thing. It's all about the replayability. For me, it's just what I hoped for - reminds me of Xevious in some respects, which is a favorite from my youth.
Going back to an earlier level with all your upgrades is very satisfying, and you'll get the medals you thought would be impossible.

If you like Sky Force you should try stuff like the Aero Fighters/Sonic Wings series. I think you can get two of them on the PS4 and a compilation of the entire series on PS3... or you know just emulate :shifty:
