Title Resonant Tale
Publisher Orange Thief Games
Developer Orange Thief Games
Format Playdate
Release 12 September 2023

> Orange Thief is GRcade's very own OrangeRKN!

Background

Orange Thief Games wrote:In Resonant Tale you'll play as the hooded adventurer Leit, waking up on a wave-washed beach in a mysterious new land. Explore the musically inspired world, befriend its unusual inhabitants, and discover your part in restoring the world to harmony. Beyond the sights, sounds and secrets of the surface four trap laden levels await, from escaping the depths of a castle dungeon to exploring an abandoned mountaintop temple. Wielding sword, arrows and bombs, will you discover all of the world's hidden treasures and reunite the sacred bells?

Made with Pulp, the web-based game editor for Playdate, Resonant Tale pushes the boundaries of what's possible with the engine and aims to surprise and delight through its depth of content and attention to detail. Featuring 2-3 hours of gameplay for a casual playthrough (and much more for the committed completionist), 30+ original music tracks, autosave, assistance options, and even an unlockable "hardcore" mode, Resonant Tale sets out to deliver a no filler full game experience.

How to Play

OrangeRKN here abusing mod powers and editing jawa's post to add instructions on how YOU can play Resonant Tale on your computer for FREE!

1) Post here or PM me to ask for a link to download the game
2) Unzip the game
3) Download and install the Playdate SDK (available for Windows, macOS and Linux)
4) Launch the Playdate Simulator application
5) Open Resonant-Tale.pdx in the Simulator

That's it! The Playdate SDK is really a developer tool and includes more than just the simulator, but there is nothing wrong with using it like this. Enjoy the game!

jawa you are far too nice

Did you screenshot the trailer for those screens?! You could just grab the ones off the itch page! Those still have the bottom of the HUD, which I have also made the mistake of cutting off on screenshots before

There's also a nicer high-res logo on the itch page, but I'm going to sound like I'm complaining pointing this out. Actually I've just been staring at and tweaking page layouts and screenshots far too much recently ahead of the trailer reveal :slol:

Anyway, as I said in the playdate thread, when the game is released I'll send anyone here who wants it an itch promo code and tell you how to install the Playdate Simulator to play the game on PC :)

Could it be fun for a few of us who play it on release to get together on a call - with RKN, on Aaron's stream? - to chat & discuss it? If you guys think this is a good idea I'd be up for it!

I did take 'em from the trailer! I've just added in the ones from the game page, though!

I love the in-game version of the logo; it has a real "dot matrix" style to it that adds to the Playdate feel :) .

I'll need to check on this; I have a ten-year old iMac and I'm hoping that it'll be able to run the Simulator.

Fake edit: Ah! It seems that the Playdate Simulator can run on PC, Mac or Linux :toot: .

But... I must be acting like a dumbass, as I can't identify how to download the Simulator software. It's not Pulp/SDK, is it?

I am definitely up for that! It was really fun doing similar with Aaron playing Unawakening. Resonant Tale is a significantly longer game with playtesters so far coming in around 2-3 hours to beat it and pushing 5 hours for 100% on a first playthrough, so I'm not sure what the best format would be. It's packed with secrets and easter eggs many of which are easy to miss (deliberately so - there's enough that you're bound to find a few but those you do find should feel like genuine discoveries, at least I hope!) and I wonder if a second playthrough with me acting as a secrets guide might be a cool way to do it? You'll get to see stuff you missed if you've already played it and a second playthrough is a lot quicker for knowing the puzzle solutions and the like!

The Simulator is packed in with the SDK, so you'll just need to download and install the SDK and that'll add the Playdate Simulator app. You can ignore the rest of the SDK stuff!

It's intended as a developer tool really (which makes sense, panic want to sell consoles, not have everyone playing on their computer) but there's nothing wrong with using it like this :)

Yeah I had a great time doing that with Unawakening!

I reckon we do something like you suggested - perhaps if anyone who wants to join the voice discussion plays the game through in advance and then I can stream a second playthrough while we discuss/I get chaperoned around by OR.

But also I regularly stream for like 6 hours at a time so very happy to do it as a first playthrough if that's not too tedious (I really enjoyed the novelty of experiencing a game for the first time while also talking to the dev haha)

Ah! Thanks, Orange - I'm not gonna be around to try this today but I will get it sorted out later. I hadn't realised that Pulp can be a visual game creator rather than having to code (although I think you can code if you want to). I'm interested in taking a look!

I remember watching your stream with Orange for Unawakening and I really enjoyed it; it was fun to see both aayl tackling the game and to hear Orange's insight into how things were put together.

Why not both??

I'd love to see you stream a first playthrough but wouldn't want to interrupt the flow of it telling you how to do things! I'm also not sure I could 100% commit to being there live for the whole thing, timings depending.

Cue Aaron getting stuck in the Resonant equivalent of Bottle Grottle for 6 hours and cursing ORKN on stream

Perfection!

Just discovered that apparently the Playdate Simulator can run on the Steam Deck so that's exciting :toot:

This looks incredibly impressive. Great work OR, will give it a go when it's released. :)

Oh I'll deffo stream my first playthrough whatever happens, I was just considering the format of a group discussion/you revealing secrets. Whether that should be during my first playthrough again, or if it should be during a second (and I would have streamed the first at a previous date).
