The problem with the companies is that they're nowhere near as interesting as the games they produced. (well, not so much that they're not interesting as it's something that - as a gamer of the time - you're were barely exposed to).

The magazines of the time are a far more profitable line of inquiry. They were our proto-internet.

Mastertronic made a whole heap of shite on the speccy but at least they had the good grace to only charge £1.99 and they also made those magic knight games which were brilliant.

The first software house that I was really aware of and looked to as a sign of quality was J K Greye Software back in the days of the ZX81...

3D Monster Maze

3D Defender

my favourite was Catacombs... but can't find a clip of that :(

The amount of great British-developed games on the Amiga was staggering.

Sensible Software were probably my number one but Team 17, Bitmap Brothers, Dino Dini and others would have to be up there too.

The Amiga was a strange strange platform. Uncommonly popular in Europe, less so in the US.

Amiga veterans may find this interesting. £130 for an FGPA board that rather effectively emulates the A500.

Of course, you could probably source a real Amiga cheaper, but it's nice to know that should every original Amiga effectively die, there's a cost effective replacement available :)

Durell Software did some immense work on the Spectrum. Harrier Attack, Combat Lynx, Critical Mass, Fat Worm Blows a Sparky, Thanatos, Saboteur, and the sublime Turbo Esprit. Some of the best games of my childhood right there.

Loves us all since 2008
