What Nintendo has done could drive old game prices up even more. With people unable to readily gain access to ROMS the domand for the rarer games will increase therefore increasing prices! :x

So, that is my 32X collection. It may be small in size but I love it :-) . The 32X really was an odd beast but that just makes it even more fun to look at and play... not that I have for a while now and so I may set it up again soon.

What a stunning collection Jawa, don't think I've ever seen such a good condition copy of Knuckles Chaotix. I bet that would be worth a fair bit if you ever decided to part with it. I've always fancied getting a 32x to add to the collection but it's so expensive to buy for that I'm not sure it'd be worthwhile.

My latest purchase arrived today so the revival of the weekender seemed the perfect opportunity to share it!

I never really played the Game Gear a great deal but I remember a friend had one and it was amazing at the time. Specifically remember being amazed by the TV tuner he had for it

Although none of the games I got are boxed the labels are all in great condition and it's a great selection of games, it comes with the master system adapter too so I feel like it's given me a great start to game gear collecting! Only annoyance was that the d-pad wasn't working properly (characters were running to the left continually), I managed to take it apart and fix that but frustratingly a sound cable came out in the process and will need resoldering!

Looking forward to having a good play with the system though once I get it fixed up!

A lovely pick up and your correct a great start into game gear collecting!

Never had a Game Gear but always been intriged by them. Am I right in saying it takes 6 AA batteries? And that it goes through them in a couple of hours?

It's entirely possible.

What gets my goat, is that by threatening sites such as EMUParadise to the point that they feel they have to pull the plug Nintendo are making claims on titles for systems they have no right to.

But we should continue this discussion eleswhere, (either the emulator or retro thread). Don't want to derail Jawa's thread. :)

This is a good point, however it does just make me feel good about snapping up a couple of titles that I really want before that happens.

ROMs will always be accessible some places, but lazy retro gamers (who wouldn't really call themselves retro gaming but will play an old game for 10 minutes), won't bother. So I'd rather have some of those titles back in my collection (after losing them to various sob stories - one was even purchased for myself as a secret santa gift on on here and it doesn't run cheap at all!!) before prices go up.

Conversely, as the appeal of retro gaming (or appeal to manufacturers to provide or it i.e. SNES Mini etc) goes up, that will make original copies perhaps less desirable, because it's a relatively expensive way to get into it, keeping some titles at stable prices.

There are also some carts that are just fantastic value in and of themself, for example I have Super Mario All Stars + Super Mario World 2 I picked up for just £19 cart only. Which isn't bad at all for what, 6 games. A lot cheaper than playing SMW2 (which I'd never had a chance to play up until this point) on a £70 micro console... The SNES is already there, so use it. :)

"It should be common sense to just accept the message Nintendo are sending out through their actions."

Thanks, Jamo! I'm fortunate to have picked up a few items before the pricing went crazy.

That's a lovely collection of GG goodness, dude! Sonic 1 and 2, Space Harrier, Out Run, Wonder Boy... you have some nice items there. I did briefly own a Game Gear at one point but I think i needed some cash and quite quickly sold it on. It must be cool to have that Master System converter and play MS games on it :-) .

Although I am a fan of retro gaming kit I don't have the knowledge to do electronic repairs like Doom Spoon and yourself do. Keep us updated on how you get on with fixing up this system, Jamo!

Haha yes good idea!

----------------------------

Anyway what's everything playing to play this weekend? I'm stuck in work today until 10 tonight but I'm going to slip a big of Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga in. Played the first hour or so and I love it. Such a different take on Mario and really quite humorous!

Yeah it takes 6 AA batteries, has two ports on either side to take them and I believe it does indeed burn through them pretty quickly, apparently 3-5 hours on average (Although interestingly it's not dissimilar to the Switch). I do have a power adaptor for it though so it will run off mains, plus some rechargeable batteries. Can't see battery life ever being an issue with the way I'll use the system but I can see why it was such a big disadvantage back in the day.

I'm definitely no expert but I'm learning as I go! Done a few minor repairs here and there and taken most of my old consoles apart to clean them up inside. Don't think I'd have the confidence to add a new screen or speaker amp like Doom Spoon is planning on doing to his GBA though!

If you're willing to swap out the screen to an LED one you can extend the battery life up to 15 hours! Plus you get an ultra sharp screen for your GG :D The original screen is illuminated by a hologen bug behind the screen which is the juice drinker.

Installing new gear for the first time is always nervracking but if you take your time and make sure you do plenty of research you'll be fine! ;)

Sounds good, I've heard that one called the McWill screen is the way to go, a totally new and massively improved screen. Seems pricey but may have to look into it at some point!

I do have an AGS 101 modded original GBA but I have to concede I bought that already assembled. It's the best way to play GBA games though in my opinion!

Well, it's the weekend, which means that a single thought is racing through our minds... the Retro Club Weekender!

I'm gonna try and grab something from my cupboard and post it up for perusal. See you back here in a bit!

Great shot, Gem! Your red PSP looks cool and Wipeout is a classic title. Of course, the inclusion of R5-D4 and Boba nets you extra kudos, too :-).

Edit: I've pulled my back getting stuff out of my storage cupboard :fp: . Going through the pain barrier for the Weekender :toot: .

Yeah the PSP is in really good condition, no scratches on the screen or marks on the unit itself. Finding a coloured one in good nick took a little hunting. Paid around £60 for it 12 months or so ago. Only really started using it of late, (mainly to take down to our caravan in Weymouth and now for work).

The R5 I picked up two years ago in Disneyland Paris at the Star Wars shop. Never had an R5 as a kid and always wanted one.

The Bobba Fett a friend bought me for my 30th, which makes it 15 years old. Don't think you can even get that particular model any more, (I've certainly not seen one new anywhere). Unfortunately the plastic casing it came in yellowed and started to rot, so I binned it.

As the legendary Ocarine of Time nears its twentieth birthday, it feels like a great time for me to step out of Hyrule Field and share my Ocarina collection with you.

Hard to find

I vividly remember the day that I bought Ocarina for my N64. It was December 1998, and I was working in London at the time. After many months of being hyped up by magazines such as Nintendo Official Magazine, I was eager to get the game at launch. I worked near quite a few places that sold videogames - Dixons, Beatties, Our Price and others - and went I popped out at lunchtime to pick up a copy. SLAM! None were available; it had already sold out in all of the stores near to me! Rather dispirited, I decided up go up to Oxford Street after work; there must surely be copies available there. At a sharp 5pm I jumped on the tube and dashed into the Mega Store... and then HMV, Dixons and the Computer Exchange... nowhere had a copy. It was launch day and my dream of playing Ocarina was going to end in tears?

I wandered into so many other shops to see if they sold videgames; some did but none had any copies of Ocarina left. Finally I headed into the small shopping arcade that used to be just off Oxford Street and I spotted a WH Smiths. The "number 1" slot on their game shelves was empty; no Ocarinas were to be found. For some reason I wandered over to the music desk and asked... the assistant went off to check if any copies were left... and she returned with one! :o . I was almost jumping around with excitement as I handed over fifty pounds to complete the purchase! This was it... the sleek, black box emblazoned with the gold insignia was in my hands... I was going to play Ocarina on launch day!

I rushed home, slammed in the game pak and the adventure began.

Ocarina bits

Image

This is my original game that I bought at launch back in December 1998.

Image

I love the colour manuals and other leaflets that were packed into the game boxes.

Image

My original version, a mint copy and a spare cart... you gotta be prepared when adventure beckons!

Image

I like the sheer style of the Japanese N64 artwork.

Image

A triumphant trio... N64 PAL, N64 Japanese and 3DS.

Image

As soon as the 3DS Ocarina console was shown I knew that I'd love to have one. It really is a sleek design.

Image

Some folk prefer later models of the system but I always liked the build quality of the original 3DS.

Image

The design is a msterclass in under-stated style.

Image

The gold indents and button markers are wonderful.

Image

The 3DS version had a pre-order bonus in some stores where you got an empty (but with small poster) gold-cover version of the case as well as the normal case. I originally purchased the standard version at launch and was fortunate to obtain an unopened pre-order case through eBay soon afterwards.

Image

This is quite interesting... on the left is the pre-order version of the case and on the right is the version that was supplied with the Zelda edition 3DS console. They are slightly different; the cover has the PEGI 12 logo on the console edition version...

Image

..whilst the reverse is different in terms of the screenshots used and the text layout.

Image

The gold cover version has lovely coloured rupees printed on the reverse which show through the inside of the game case. A wonderful touch!

Image

I ws a big fan of Nintendo Official Magazine; it was targeted at an audience far younger than myself (even at that time!) but I loved the enthusiasm and fun that was packed into the mag. This edition was special as it contained the first review of Ocarina!

Image

The review was huge (12 pages!) and was a pull-out insert in the mag.

Image

The opening two pages of the review...

Image

...and - ^^^ SPOILERS! - their final verdict!

Image

I grabbed this N64 Magazine game guide and the official Prima game guide just after launch.

Image

Many years later, Prima produced a new hardback version of the guide to align with their other Zelda game guides. This book is only available as a part of Prima's Zelda Guide hardback treasure chest.

Image

In recent years I have played Zelda on my New 3DS, for which I obtained a lovely Zelda case cover. It's quite stylish!

Image

Rather infamously, I haven't played past the bit where Link becomes an adult but the adventure is always ready to continue on my 3DS  .

- - - - - - - - - -

I hope that you enjoyed this wander through Ocarina stuff. I've now got to re-build my flat to get everything packed away again  .

Haha, well, you may be able to get one, Pedz - I don't think they're particularly rare as such.
