We threw one like that in the skip after clearing out my Granddad's place. Would have loved to keep it for retro goodness, but didn't have the space to keep it at the time

The Weekender is back!

After a quiet period, the chat in the retro thread and the impending arrival of Virtua Racing on Switch has encouraged me to revive this collection / photo share initiative.

Virtua Racing got me thinking about my Sega 32X collection and so I wandered over to my cupboard.

Getting into the 32X: a delayed reaction

Image

I never had a 32X at the time of release as it was quite expensive and there was the promise of new dedicated 32-bit console on the horizon. I remember wanting to play Star Wars Arcade and Space Harrier but even they wern't enough to get me to splash out. Years later - around 2008 - I picked up a 32X console and started to search out games for it. I was lucky to have squeaked into this just before the prices started becoming quite expensive.

So, now I am fortunate to have two 32X systems (with all boxes and cables) and ten games. Lets take a closer look at the games' cover artwork.

The games

Image

After Burner | Doom | Knuckles' Chaotix

I am a fan of Sega's acade hits and so AB was a must, even though I'm terrible at playing it! Doom 32X has a mixed reputation but I quite like it; it plays slickly and remains fun. Knuckles is probably the jewel in my 32X collection, especially as it is in great condition. It is a quirky game that takes some getting used to... it is odd but interesting!

Image

NBA Jam TE | Mortal Kombat II | Space Harrier

NBA is notable for having a Mega Drive-like plastic clam case; I like it as it is far more hard-wearing than the thin cardboard boxes that all other games used! The cardboard boxes are so difficult to keep in good condition although I guess it adds to their collectibility. MK is nice on the 32X although not a huge step up from teh MD version. Harrier is an excellent arcade conversion; it looks and plays great.

Image

Star Wars Arcade | Stellar Assault | Virtua Fighter

Star Wars is a great demonstartion of the tech power of the 32X, both looking and sounding really cool. I think it remains the only conversion of Sega's arcade title, too. Stellar steps things up as a showcase for filled polygons moving at a reasonable speed - this title seems quite hard to find. VF is another top arcade conversion, sometimes regarded as being slicker than the later Saturn version.

Image

I managed to pick up a sealed copy of Virtua Racer. Sega approached their sealing of 32X games rather oddly; by placing a black sticker across the box that you had to tear to open. I left this one sealed as I am fortunate to also have a loose cart of the game. My boxed copy of Doom is also sealed and, again, I have a loose cart copy to play.

Knuckles' Chaotix is in lovely condition; a little wear on the box but complete with inner case and manual.

So, that is my 32X collection. It may be small in size but I love it :-) . The 32X really was an odd beast but that just makes it even more fun to look at and play... not that I have for a while now and so I may set it up again soon.

Amazing write up and photos Jawa  Always enjoyed our 32x talks on Rocket League Tuesdays and such so a treat to see the collection in full, and indeed complete with the lil' jawa!

So jealous on that mint condition Knuckles Chaotix =O As you say, it's a collector's nightmare trying to keep cardboard boxes in good nick, interesting on NBA Jam being an outlier there

Haven't really been going after "rare" games, more those that I've enjoyed in the past and would like to own again. Here's a few PS1 titles I've picked up in the last week or so. All complete and in good condition.

You have some nice pick-ups there, Gemini. PS1 games are often tough to find in a decent condition! I was interested in Or Die Trying and your post inspired me to take a look at a YouTube vid of it :-) .

Cheers, Jawa.

Yeah finding PS1 and DC games without the boxes being in a right state is tough, (Headhunter on DC arrived in the post the other day and the box had been damaged in transport :( ). I know they're not the most durable of designs, but I often wonder what folk did with their games. I was always bollocking the kids for not putting games and movies back in their relative box and then back on the shelf: "If the box breaks, or the disc scratches and no longer works I'm not buying you another!" would be the usual rant. They have learned, however, that these things aren't indesctuctble and need looking after. The other day they were neatly packing away their Disney Infinity figures and games, (into a big, plastic container I'd provided), after playing with them. Bless.

ODT is a bastard to control at first but once you get your head around it, it's actually a very good game.

I do quite like the PS cases but they can scratch easily and the hinges aren't tough. I have tried to look after my cases but it is a difficult task! I never owned a DC but I believe the cases are even less sturdy. All games should come in Master System / Mega Drive style cases; tough and stylish!

Please enjoy the games for now, Preezy, and I may dig out the 32X consoles for a future Weekender :-) .

Oh aye Dreamcast cases are stupidly flimsy, plus I'm convinced they scratch the disks...or at least that's my excuse for all mine being in such bad shape :shifty:

I always remember going into Game (or was it EB) and always be picking up and looking at Knuckle Chaotix box but never actually going ahead and buying a 32X (as I was a kid).

Interested to know, did the 32x actually enhance the games you had Jawa?

DC cases are lame. The hinges, the teeth that hold the discs in place, everything about them seem designed to just fall apart if absolute care is not employed.

I don't believe that the 32X enhances standard Mega Drive games, Floex; the unit only comes into play for a 32X-specific game. It's interesting how it works... it displays 32X-derived graphics over the top of the standard display coming from the MD. It's incredibly quirky but the results can be quite neat! I've mentioned it before but I love the full MD / 32X / Mega CD setup... it looks like an absolute beast of a gaming machine  .

I recall seeing them broken on shop shelves, so goodness knows what they were like after a few months of open-and-close came into play!

Lovely little collection Jawa! All look in good condition and well kept :simper:

Sadly I don't own it anymore but my first console was a Mega Drive. I was about 5 and my Auntie bought it as a birthday present. Me and my brother spent many hours playing games like Sonic 2, The Little Mermaid (awesome game don't judge  ) and a ninja game that I can not remember the name for at all!

I have considered jumping into the Mega Drive scene again but it seems to be one of the "in" system to collect, as a result price's are inflated :x

I'll post up my full collection later after work :D

Anyway moving on from the horror of Dreamcast game cases and onto a different kind of horror, these two arrived in the post today.

Never played them before, but was always curious and they look good next to the rest in the series.

Wow, getting a MD from your auntie must have made for an awesome birthday, dude! It'd be cool to see more of your collection, Doom.

I love the artwork on Outbreak, Gemini. It's terrific!

Just a thought, folks... please don't think that you can only post "rare" or "expensive" games and kit in this thread. The fun is in the sharing and chatting; not really the financial value or otherwise :-) .

Also, whilst it's cool to check out "whole collections", you may wish to post individual items or maybe just parts of your collection. It'd be a shame if everything you have was shared in one weekend... you could spread it out so that folk can better appreciate your collection over a range of weeks  .

Yeah it's a great frontcover. The Outbreak titles aren't supposed that amazing yet do apparently stay in line with classic RE. I'll play them first, obviously, before casting my own judgement, but I'm just happy to own them complete and in such good condition.

That's good to know! There are too many retro groups and clubs that are all about one upping each other with rare kit and games. Then there's me sharing a pick up of pro skater 4 for gamecube and get instantly dismissed lol.

Rare stuff is great, but with the likes of Nintendo hell-bent on stomping out video game preservation keeping hold of/collecting any video games from times past is cool in my book.
