Samba de Amigo!

I have 2 copies of the rare PAL version - only about 20,000 were released in the whole of Europe. I had to get 2 full copies as the maracas weren't sold separately in Europe. This is one of the "stars" of my collection - I absolutely love everything about this game from the box art, to the maracas, colourful graphics and crazy re-mixes of cool songs like La Bamba, Take on Me etc.

I have the official set, but the Japanese versions. Great game, so much fun.

That set(s) look fantastic, Andy! I haven't played the game but I know that it's meant to be a bit of a classic. The box artwork is terrific; just so attractive. It all looks to be in lovely condition, too. Great stuff!

It's great to have got some insight into the games that you shared, Hound. You certainly have a collection that is packed full of interesting items! I have never played on a NES but I do like the game line-up. Pedz played Shatterhand in a Retro Monday livestream a couple of months back! Mighty Final Fight looks ace; I like that "super deformed" styling. I have played the GameBoy version of RC Pro Am but I, too, didn't know there was a sequel on the NES. Thanks for sharing an excellent selection!

Funny, I was playing Bucky O Hare just a few weeks ago on my NES.

It really is great - just so playable and fun.

I love some of the late NES games which pushed it to the limit - many of these are undiscovered gems as they released when the SNES was already out.

So I dug out my old launch day PS1 and had a play of this absolute classic. Still my favourite helicopter game to date

Ah, the original PlayStation was just so sleek and tech'd up for its day  . CDs - black CDs! - on a console... it seemed so futuristic! Good to see the original controller (sans sticks) too. If we put your 'Station and my Ridge Racer discs together, it'd be a hell of a party, Preezy :toot: .

I know I own a couple of the original Dual Shocks but they seem to have been claimed by the Spider King of the Loft :dread:
The classic launch controllers definitely have a classic appeal though.

More victims of time :( .

When I was digging out my Ridge discs I spotted a couple of PlayStation dual shock controllers that were translucent smoke grey with light grey sticks and buttons... they looked freakin' fantastic!

Weird little fact about those black PlayStation CDs, Marilyn Manson released an album on them.

I think I have two original dualshocks that I never use if anyone might be interested in them.

I'm pretty sure the black CDs were more prone to read errors?

I must confess that I'd not heard that suggestion, Gecko... I believe that Sony used the black format purely as a visual anti-piracy measure. They sure did look swell, anyway :-).

I know some titles came out on regular CDs. Years ago I had a copy of the Greatest Hits edition of Chrono Cross and that was on regular CDs. I thought it was a pirate copy but did some research and it turned out to be legit... the game was a waste of money anyway as I foolishly assumed US PS1 games would run on a PAL PS3, you know what with it being region free and that :fp:

I know black CDs have trouble playing in some CD drives but maybe not a problem for the PS1.

Muse also released an album on one, which is how I know.

I have that album and never noticed the black disc.

Anyway, re: the Ridge Racer stuff Jawa posted on the previous page, I have the big box SE version of Type 4, it came with a Namco T-shirt, some stickers (which I stupidity decided to stick on my wardrobe door) and the Hi-spec Ridge Racer tech demo, I was a bit annoyed to discover it wasn't the version that included the Jogcon controller but I couldn't return it to the shop as I bought it in France the day before returning home.

I subsequently bought the standard edition Type4 Joycon bundle from GAME during a stock clearance.

PS1 is a weird one for me. I only really got into it a couple of years ago and it mostly passed me by at the time.

I did have one for about 2 months, and the only games I had were Resi 3, Puzzle Fighter and Silent Bomber. The console was leant to me by the then girlfriend of my partners housemate. They both worked for well-known-at-the-time publishing company so she had very easy access to spares. One night me and the other half were in and watching TV when we heard the housemate having very loud sex - and it wasn't with his GF. I was enraged that he could treat someone so nice so poorly, so his toothbrush had an encounter with my arsehole. She found out, they broke up, I gave the Playstation back and carried on with my N64 (which I loved).

I heard a lot of people say the Playstation had aged really poorly, but I mostly disagree. It's got tonnes. of cracking games that play just as well now. Maybe we could do PS1 appreciation as a future theme?

The Weekender has certainly caused a wide range of happy memories to be shared here  .

Yeah, I do agree that the PS had a huge array of great titles, Hound. Some have aged badly but, with the massive range of games available, there are plenty of tip-top hits as well. I hope that we do see plenty of them in the coming Weekenders!

I'm probably not going to be around much to comment in the thread tomorrow, so I'll shout out an early "thank you!" to everyone has taken part in this second Weekender. We have been lucky enough to see a wide variety of retro gaming gear and I hope that we can keep this going in future weeks. Stay locked on the retro appreciation, GRcade :toot: .

The Recycling Bag of Joy: Part One

Going to split this into two posts with some themes.

First up, some stone cold classics:
Image
Never played The Chaos Engine or Cannon Fodder, but I know they have a great reputation. I remember TCE being lauded in the Gamesmaster Annual back in the day.

Football games:
Image
Not pictured: FIFA International Soccer and FIFA 95 because they're a bit boring. Having played most of these this week (not got round to Ryan Giggs yet) it's still clear just how much better FIFA was than other football games of the time. It's aged significantly better than all of these (although they may also have just been a bit gooseberry fool!)

Never seen a cart like this before, but apparently it's quite common for Accolade games...
Image

Some unboxed games:
Image

Finally for this post, some controller curios:
Image
The SNES-like pad is brand new so I may get a USB converter for it to use on my PC. The joystick appears to be a Kempston Zipstik, which seems to be multiformat. We were a Quickshot family so I'm out of my depth! The Cheetah Bollistik is another odd one that I've not seen before, apparently people like that the D-pad is at an angle. I've not actually fired any of these up yet to have a go as I've been playing late at night so have just used the IR pads that came with the console remake.
