Welcome, fellow Weekenders!

Image

I asked Tommy and Timmy if they'd like to help out and, as Tom had given them the day off, they jumped at the chance!

Image

We got straight into it and, as Ocarina had recently been voted best N64 game here in GRcade, we thought it'd be cool to share some photos of our Japanese copies of both Ocarina and Majora.

Image

We clambered over the boxes to take a good look at the fantastic artwork...

Image

...and then Timmy wanted to take a better look at the spine designs.

Image

Excitement was building and so we opened the Ocarina box.

Image

Wow! Check out the amount of inserts; it really made getting a new game a thrilling experience!

Image

Ocarina even included a sticker sheet containing controller symbols that you could stick onto a stave sheet to keep a note of all the Ocarina tunes.

Image

We then decided to open up Majora, eager to explore more lovely artwork.

Image

Japanese N64 games often included a seperate controller guide colour card as well as a colour manual!

Image

I like to keep my games in good nick so I popped the cardboard cases back into protector covers. So shiny!

Image

We're pleased that you could join in as we checked out these cool games! A special thank you to Timmy and Tommy for helping out...next weekend I will try and include a different guest as we delve into the world of retro gaming. Cheerio for now!

Love the Zelda N64 Japanese versions :toot:

Funnily enough, I always restricted my collection to "PAL only" - mainly because I got the games as I grew up, and getting Japanese ones wasn't an option.

I miss the days of inserts - instruction manuals, posters, tips books, competitions...It made opening the game really special.

Now we get nothing. Not even an instruction manual :x

Jamo, we picked similar themes 8-) . That looks to be an terrific collection! It's good to see that you have a copy of both the original Awakening and the GBC version. For your Game Boy version, is the distribution by THE Games or Nintendo? I have two versions of that, one by each distributor; from memory, I believe that the logo size on the spine varioes, too. As for the one or two repro boxes, would the SNES game be one of them? It does look particularly sharp! Thanks for sharing your set, dude!

Oh, man, yeah - I used to like reading through the game manuals - I was one of those odd folk who would read right through before playing the game  . To be honest, the lack of a manual is a factor in why I have generally moved over to digital downloading for my PS4... which is probably what the publishers want :x .

Thanks Jawa, loved the use of your Amiibo and the Jawa figure to share yours - might give me some inspiration for next week! Loving the Japanese boxes too, they're stunning. LTTP is a repro, as are the NES games, my Links Awakening box is also a repro although I do have the original box for that but it's the 'Nintendo Classics version' and I preferred the cleaner style of the original box (but didn't want to buy the game all over). I think they're all pretty good reproductions though, comparing my two Links Awakening boxes they're almost indistinguishable. The only dead giveaway is that the repro boxes are more of a dull gold rather than the shinier gold box of the original versions. From what I can see my original Links Awakening box seems to have been distributed by Nintendo, can't see any mention of THE Games anywhere.

Yeah, from the photo they do look to be very good, Jamo. As prices have risen in the past few years I can see them becoming a decent option. It'll be important that we check future purchases before buying, though, to make sure we're not being sold a repro in place of an original!

Cool stuff, I will dig my copies out of the cupboard sometime to check.

And, yeah, it'll be good to see what folk do to bring a different angle to their photos over the coming weekends :toot: .

Yeah, I like my boxes to be mint (or near mint condition) and unfortunately the costs of finding ones even approaching that is becoming ridiculous, most of the originals I do have are in excellent condition but I frequently got cartridge only games as a kid because they were so much cheaper.

I totally agree on your other point, these are for my personal collection and as I say, the only realistic way for me to get accurate looking, mint condition boxes. If I were to sell I'd be transparent about them being reproductions but there'll be plenty of people who don't do that, I've heard tales of repros turning up in places like CEX which isn't fair on people unknowingly unknowingly buying them.

Thanks, dude. We've had such a great start to this first Weekender - some terrific photos and cool interaction - and we've still got three days for other folk to join in :toot: .

Good idea.

Shame it's an arse as only the app actually posts images but I believe I have the sufficient flair. I qualify because I have an undercut

I know I'll stay logged into gr on my iPad that I never use for insta because only morons do that, I can save the images here.

I'm not sure we have enough stuff for instagram, also the posts can't have links in i believe, you can put link text but it doesn't hyperlink.

Would work on Twitter and fb where we have some following though

Yeah may just be thinning out the audience. I didn't know instagram killed links, people may still copy and paste them though and brand awareness on instagram can be pretty good as you get a lot more response from just tagging stuff, for some reason. Like 10x what I see on Twitter.

On Facebook just use this https://pixlr.com/o-matic/ https://apps.facebook.com/o-matic/

It always used to it may have changed.

I don't think people copy and paste links as it is mostly mobile use and that's a ball ache, i think insta is more about getting people to see your name and logo and gooseberry fool

OK, time to balance out all this Nintendo with a few PS1 oddities (because they're the easiest to lay my hands on).

Whoop! rinks rocks in, bringing a new dimension to the Weekender!

SSI, blimey, that's a blast from the past. I remember the brand from back in the 8/16 bit computer days and I recall that they tried to bring a few games onto console. As for Vampire Hunter, I had to look that one up. It's unusual not to have the publisher logo on the cover, but it seems to have been Jaleco and the game is known as Vampire Hunter D overseas.

Ocean  . Boy, they were a huge name on the computer formats and they moved on to consoles before, I believe, being bought up by Infogrames. I'd forgotten about Tunnel B1 but I do have True Pinball by Ocean on the PlayStation... and that was developed by Digital Illusions, who went on to develop the mighty Battlefield! (FAKE EDIT: Oh, and the excellent True Drivin' by Ocean on PS1, too!).

And finally, OverBlood (II)... I've heard of it but not played it!

Good to see some PlayStation games here and yours look to be in fine condition, rinks. It has tempted me to snap a few PS titles for future Weekenders :toot: .

I went after the RE GC games too!

Image

Loved having them all on one system at that point. I'm aiming to do the same on PS4 seeing as Code Veronica and Revelations are coming to PS4 this year......only RE 2&3 will be missing from PS4

Another highlight from my GC collection are my Zelda games

Great to see you walk onto the stage, Milner! Ah... our second Resident collection of the day! Lovely stuff and I note that you have the limited edition version of Resident 4; is it a sleeve that covers the standard packaging?

Excellent to see your comprehensive Zelda 'Cube set, too. It's cool that you grabbed the limited edition Wind Waker version... I recall seeing that in the shops and I was so tempted to get a GC, but I stuck with my Xbox!

Thanks for sharing. Come back to the Weekender again!

Crikey it's all kicking off in here :o

All great posts but for me so far I have to say that AndyXL's cartoon NES collection is the most impressive

I'll be sharing one or two PS1 pics tomorrow or Sunday :toot:

Jawa that Zelda set is lush. How much did it set you back?

Cora winning the thread with his GC Resi collection. :datass:

Anyone else contributing?

Thanks, Drum. I got them about seven years ago and they weren't that expensive; I think they were about £25 each.

It'd be ace to see another few pics over this Easter launch weekend!

Thank you to everyone who has posted / commented so far. It feels like we have a cool little band of retro fans here in GR and hopefully we'll get some momentum going with these Weekender events!

All those Zelda games and he's played a cumulative 3 hours across them all.

Yes. I know it's only 2 but still.
