Hello! I thought I'd focus on a classic racing franchise on the PlayStation system this weekend... Rrrrrrridge Racer! As these games are ideal for speed freaks I invited my pal Sonic over to help me to share them with you.

Image

We dragged the games out of the cupboard and stacked 'em up.

Image

My original launch copy of RR came in a standard case, but quite quickly the game appeared in a double case, too - even though only a single CD was included. Beyond the case difference, the packaging is the same although the original game has a perfect-bound manual whilst the double case version has a stapled manual which has more pages and include more language variations.

Image

We took a peek inside the two RR cases.

Image

RRR has lovely artwork and it was one of the first examples that I saw of full-colour disc printing for the PS1. It also contained a set of stickers for labelling up memory cards.

Image

Shiny RR Type 4 and Rage Racer cases :-). The Rage case is cool as the text is gold embossed; it looks really smart against the darker background image. The darker tone of Rage was quite a step away from the vibrant colouring of the previous titles and I quite liked the variance.

Image

The RR Type 4 game came in a standard case but contained two discs; one of which was a 60FPS ("hi-spec demo") version of the original RR game. It certainly ran smoothly.

Image

Meanwhile, the Rage game also came in a standard case but with two discs; the second one being a Namco demo disc.

Image

Here's a little bonus for you - a version of the "hi-spec demo" RR game that has its own cardboard sleeve. The disc itself is the same as the disc included in the RRT4 game. I obtained this version through eBay around 2010 and I don't know how it was issued; presumably it was given away at the time of the RRT4 launch.

Image

A lovely mountain of Ridge Racer goodies!

Image

Thank you for watching the show! Sonic and I had loads of fun looking over these games. I'll see you again in a future Weekender :toot: .

Some really nice items there, dude. I have never owned a GBA but the SP model really does look swish, especially in that NES design. Your one seems to be in tip-top condition, too. I like the smart grey-and-black GBA SP bag... and also your Nintendo Official Magazine storage case  . As an added bonus, it'a always excellent to see a Treasure title included and so Astro Boy hits the spot.

Thanks for sharing your gear, man!

Cheers Jawa, love the RR collection as well. I never owned a ps1 but i played a hell of a lot of Ridge Racer and RR Revolution. My friend nearby me when i was younger owned a PS1 and we would have constant battles to see who could hit the best lap times. We would constantly better each other and scrape milliseconds off of the times made, it was so addictive and the drift controls were great, if i remember right as well you could boot up Ridge Racer and then take the disc out and play your own music.

Yep, I'd forgotten about that - good shout! The game loaded up in a single hit and you could pop in a music CD if yu wanted to. I always kept the game disc in, though, 'cos the music was terrific - completely daft and over-the-top (the replay music in particular  ) but it just seemed to suit the experience!

So this is where I would be posting some pictures of my latest purchase but I nipped out to the shop for all of 20 mins only to return to one of those Royal Mail "Something for you" cards. I've rescheduled the delivery for next Saturday so there should be no chance of me missing it... curse my need for caffeine and sustenance.

Oh well back to Crash Bandicoot 3 I guess.

Not especially. Most of my retro stuff is either on my PS3 hard drive or *whispers* on my laptop's hard drive as I'm a dirty thief :shifty:

So I just got back from a week in Vegas - and these are my pickups - delighted to complete my Mega Man classic + X series collections

Image Image Image Image

It was also suggested I post some of my collection here too. Here's my retro gaming setup.

Image

In terms of unusual consoles, I have a Sega CDX

Image

and 2 PC Engines - a Core Grafx and a Duo - both RGB modded

Image Image

I also have a Toploader NES and a SNES JR - also both RGB modded. My 2 favourite consoles. I love them to death. I have between 150-175 games for each machine and I mostly collect NTSC for 60hz full screen goodness.

That's impressive. Round the corner from me too.

I'd definitely recommend a nice PVM to round off that setup, maybe you can even find one in 21inch.

I would *love* a PVM. I have a B&O CRT, which is wonderful, but I fear it's on its last legs

Wow. Wow. Hound casually walks onto the stage, grabs a mic and starts jamin' with the band!

It seems that you got lots of cool pick-ups in Vegas, dude... but I'm just sat here checkiing out your awesome gaming room! You have got a tremendous range of systems (good to see the Xbox tucked away on that bottom shelf!) and a spectacular array of games. I particulalry like your wee GameBoy shelf unit; very smart indeed :) .

The CDX does look lovely - I still marvel at how Sega crunched down two large-ish units into a single sleek chasis. And, of course, the sign of a good game collection is owning a copy of Future Cop LAPD :toot: .

Thanks for sharing your stuff here, Hound. Maybe in future Weekenders you could perhaps focus in on a few of the objects? It's be really nice to see more detail of such a great setup :) .

Absolutely - Let's admit it, half the fun of collecting is getting to show it off :)

Do we have a theme for this weekend?

Nothing in particular this time, Hound, so feel free to pick out a personal favourite or whatever. For future Weekenders I may propose a theme, though - I like that idea and it could be worth trying out.

OK - well I'll post about my "high end" (i.e. most valuable) NES games. These are all NTSC apart from Little Samson, so the rarity is possible different to PAL - for example Battletoads Double Dragon is pretty common in PAL format.

Image

From left to right:
Metal Storm is probably one of my favourite NES games. It's a run and gun game where you can invert gravity
Bucky O'Hare is an awesome action-platformer where you can switch between characters and it's hard as balls
Little Samson is a bit of a holy grail if you have the NTSC version (sells for over £1k loose!). I have the PAL-B version and it's only worth 1/10th of that. Amazing Mega Man style platformer though
Mega Man 5 is probably the hardest of the original 6 to find, maybe as it was the last one published by Capcom (Nintendo published 6). The graphics and music are sensational for an NES game. People turn their nose up at Mega Man 5 & 6 but I genuinely believe they are as good as 2 and 3
Adventure Island 3 is becoming had to find. It's the original Wonderboy forumula dialled up and a lot of fun
Gun Nac is arguably the best shooter on the NES. Better than Life Force
Mighty Final Fight is a super-deformed take on the arcade classic. And if it had a 2 player mode it would surpass it
Ufouria (PAL) is a great Metroid-style game and has awesome music because Sunsoft
Fire & Ice is the follow up to Solomon's Key and is a great puzzle game

Image

TMNT Tournament Fighter is a pretty novel Streetfighter game. You don't get many like this on the NES
Snow Bros is a Bubble Bobble clone by Capcom. It's not as good but still fun
Shatterhand is a fantastic action-platformer where you can punch things (!) and combine weapons to make unique drones. Top graphics and music too. So 90s
S.C.A.T has the most unfortunate name in gaming history? It's called Action in New York in PAL regions and that name is probably as bad for different reasons. It's a really fun on-rails shooter, kinda like Burai Fighter
Duck Tales 2 isn't as good as the first game, but is longer and more in-depth
Gargoyles Quest 2 - amazing follow up to the Gameboy classic. It's an action-platformer with RPG elements.
Felix the Cat is a platformer but Sunsoft where you can transform your handbag into different vehicles. A lot of fun
Battletoads Double Dragon is the follow up to that notorious NES game. It's far better than the original too as there are far more brawler stages, and they were the only fun part of the first game
RC Pro AM 2 - I didn't even know this existed until a few years ago. I loved the first game and this is more of the same but better

SCAT

Those look like some great games. I like the sound of the gravity inversion one. Sadly, I've never had access to a NES, and that era has limited appeal to me. I prefer the SNES and GBA, and have quite a few GameBoy games - after all, they're very similar.

Time for some Dreamcast, and possibly the most fun game of all time.

Samba de Amigo!

I have 2 copies of the rare PAL version - only about 20,000 were released in the whole of Europe. I had to get 2 full copies as the maracas weren't sold separately in Europe. This is one of the "stars" of my collection - I absolutely love everything about this game from the box art, to the maracas, colourful graphics and crazy re-mixes of cool songs like La Bamba, Take on Me etc.

Ah SCAT
Reminds me of the time one of my colleagues told me she had to explain to the head of Somerset Archives why they shouldn't name their cataloguing system S.Cat.

I'm so jealous of all the retro porn. I remember Snow Brothers. I don't think I'll be able to dig anything out this weekend, hopefully next time.

I also googled scat, and wish I didn't.

SCAT is a good example of the confusion caused by the naming of games in different territories during the 8 and 16 bit eras as it has a different name in each of the three major territories. In Japan it's called Final Mission, in America it's called SCAT and in Europe it's called Action in New York.
