Congratulations on the new arrival, Preezy! An N64 is a beautiful thing :datass: . Your system looks to be in great condition, too.

As you've got Dark de Parfait... I guess you have the memory expansion pak rammed into the top slot of the console?

Inspired by AndyXL picking up a copy of Mario 64, for this Weekender I will share my Japanese and Hong Kong copies of the game. With a little help from Mario himself :toot: .

Image

Me and Mario dug out the games from my cupboard and we stacked 'em up.

Image

There were two versions of the game released in Japan. The original release (left) in 1996 was launched before the arrival of the controller rumble pack and, once that was available in 1997, Nintendo re-released the game in a rumble pack-compatible version (right).

Image

Hong Kong versions of N64 titles were released with the packaging and in-game text being in English rather than Chinese or Japanese. This results in a product that runs on Japanese consoles at the usual 60hz but in English; very nice indeed! In the photo I am pointing at the little "For Hong Kong Only" boxed message on the packaging.

Image

The Hong Kong releases came in UK/Europe/USA-sized boxes rather than the larger Japanese variant. As you can see, all packaging text is in English in this version of the game.

Image

This photo captures the Japanese edition of the manual (left) and the Hong Kong version (right), showing the language variations. Both full-colour, comprehensive manuals are excellent!

I hope you enjoyed the show! I'm looking forward to seeing more items shared in this special Bank Holiday Weekender :toot: .

That n64 is in smashing condition. Is it just me or is it black and not dark grey?

I hesitate to chip in before Preezy has responded, but the machine is grey... unless Preezy has an exclusive personalised variant :o .

Thanks, Hypes. I like to be careful with my gear. The Hong Kong version has some wear to the cardboard on the reverse side, but it was like that when I bought it. I did invest in some plastic box protectors for my N64 games and they do a great job in keeping them in good shape.

I intend to get some of those.

Comparing greys strikes again! I suppose it's the lack of dust :slol:

I thought it looked black too.

It's definitely standard colour N64.

Speaking of which, I'll continue the N64 theme

These are all the games I had to hand, there's more in the collection but they're elsewhere. Sadly most of the boxes are either gone or probably crushed in an attic :(

It arrived :D

I've been after a copy of this for quite some time now having played it briefly at a friends house years ago.

The case, manual and disc are all in great condition and I'm looking forward to giving a whirl later on.

My French isn't great but wouldn't that be Noir Parfait?

I must say I'd forgotten just how stylish a machine the N64 was.

Perfect Dark.

Still the best FPS ever relative to time of release.

That's a cool set of carts, Hypes. Worms Armageddon isn't that easy to find for the N64. Ridge Racer is a surprisingly good version. I haven't tried Wipeout on the machine; does it play well, dude?

Nice one, Salad - it does look to be in very good nick. It's a title that I've not played but, of course, it has an excellent reputation!

I did notice that the case doesn't feature a PlayStation hologram, suggesting that either it's a replacement or that it is an older (original) case that has been used as a replacement. Not looking to put it down, dude, because everything is in lovely condition - just a spot! Ironically my copies of X-COM on the PlayStation should have blank cases but I replaced them with hologram versions because the originals were damaged.

Sadly I'm not that important, it's just grey.

Embarrassingly I've never played it, can't wait to get properly stuck in when the wife goes to bed :slol:

Jawa - I don't have the expansion thing but the game still runs when I've tested it quickly, do I need it?

The console and controller really are in stonkingly good condition, genuinely look brand new.

You do, dude - only about 50% of the game features can be enabled without the ram pak. Once I've finished with Mario Kart I'll update here!

Yes, without it you only get a limited multiplayer. The single player and co-op campaign, and full optioned multiplayer require it

Could've ended that sentence after the word "ever" you know.

I've got nothing for you this week, but I am taking a trip to the local retro game shop this afternoon, so I may pick up a bargain or a SNES if there's one going.

You have a local retro game shop? And it's open on a Sunday? You live in an absolute utopia, Cora!

Yes Ridge Racer 64 is one of my favourite racing games. From what I remember Wipeout plays very well, I think I always preferred F-Zero X but Wipeout was great fun to play as well.
