Today I was helping clear out the house's awful hall closet which has been crammed with loads of stuff since we moved in about 12 years ago. Besides all sorts of housewares, jackets, boxes and other gubbins, hiding in a nondescript cardboard box in the corner were my old Mega Drive and N64! :D I thought they had vanished for good years ago, and that signalled the end of my assistance with the clearout as I had to see if they were still working.

I realised I'm missing the power cable for the N64, and I wasn't feeling too confident with the Mega Drive but I hooked it all up anyway. Flicked the power switch, the screen went black which was already more than I expected, and then it happened.

SEEEEGAAAAAAA!

I don't even remember what face I made. Sonic the Hedgehog was the first game I ever played, my parents reckon I was about 5 or 6, and here it all was. Same cartridge, same pad, still working close to 20 years later, it's crazy. Handy as it is, emulation cannot compare to the real thing.

So to make a topic out of it, what was the last retro gaming discovery you made that made you overload with nostalgia?

really hoping this isn't already a topic and it gets locked

There's a general retro gaming thread, but so what. Sega
Mine was replaying Toejam & Earl on XBLA when it came out about a year ago. The soundtrack to those 2 games are probably the reason why I wanted to be a musician.

My last retro 'wub' feeling was earlier today. I picked up the new Retro Gamer mag because the cover grabbed my attention; it has a race start grid adorned with vehicles from classic racer games. It just looks brilliant.

And, yeah, that Megadrive start-up exclamation of 'say-gaa' is a legendary moment!

How appropriate, I had this on in the background when clicking on this thread :P

Some of the best game soundtracks ever were on the MD :') Definitely Toejam included, as Buffalo mentioned.

Something so special about firing up an old sega console and I totally agree with there being something about playing on the actual hardware rather than emulation.

Sonic 2 was my very first console game. Got that and a mega drive one Christmas, (whichever was the first after sonic 2 came out), what a day that was

Always had nintendo systems when i was young so never really experienced sega games properly until later on

Also speaking about old games, has anyone fired up Resident Evil remake on GC recently? I booted it up over the weekend I am impressed by just how great that game looks! The graphics have held there own even after all this time

I played through Mega Man 2 on a NES a couple of years ago, got to the exact same point I got to before and still could not beat it. I love that game so much.

While I totally agree with your sentiments, as also spent/spend far too much of my life playing this game...

... Dear god man, set it to 4:3! Stretched aspect ratio makes it look awful!

He's not too bad. I think the quick boomerang is his weakness.

The wall barrier guardian after that is borderline broken though. What a frustrating piece of gooseberry fool for the uninitiated.

A couple of years ago I discovered my old Master System in a cupboard, the pads were utterly broken and the rf cable was missing, in desperation I tried using the Megadrive pads and cables and was amazed that they were compatible.

Spent all day playing Enduro Racer and Wonderboy III

Wow, that is a damn good run of RE2! I played it through for the first time recently and was comparatively hopeless  I died so many times...

Agreed and the aged graphics dont even really bother me.

I also really like some of the older RPGs like KOTOR (awesome game!) and Gothic 2.

While I must admit to being a little bit impressed, a real man would have posted a pic of an A ranking for the LEON B game... ;)

Way too much time on this...

Playing resi 2 on my vita ATM. I remember borrowing it on ps1 when it came out and my mum stealing it off me because she read all the bad press about it. Wasn't until later I realised shed left the disk in the machine :)

She ended up buying me it when I was a bit older on the n64 and I must have completed it about ten times.

Bringing back a lot of good memories playing again on vita.
