Columns is a hideously underrated game in almost every respect thanks to Tetris. They're not even that similar, save for the fact that stuff falls down a vertical playing area and if it gets to the top you lose. It's a lot more similar to Puyo Pop/Mean Bean Machine if anything.

It's funny, as a kid I preferred Land 2, but over the years I think I've changed to liking 1 more, partly due to it suiting the Game Boy better. Both are still very fine games though
It's also funny that it as you say doesn't get enough respect, it's one of the best selling games of all time! I suppose not having a remake/rerelease doesn't help that. God I wish Nintendo would bring back some of their classic Game Boy titles via obvious means
I remember once there was this guy, he was pretty drunk, and had finished playing a metal/grunge concert where he destoryed a drumkit (figuratively, he just rocked hard), and then he went on this old crummy piano and started playing the Mario Land 1 tune perfectly, with proper chords and stuff. Made my night.
