I think that some GameBoy compositions so richly eclipse many of Nintendo's mainstream soundtracks for contemporary titles. Kazumi Totaka and 'Hip' Tanaka surely deserve much more attention than they presently enjoy. I am convinced that Totaka arranged--with Link's Awakening--a Zelda soundtrack that trounces anything that Minegishi and his contemporaries (from which I discount Kondo) have scored. I love his work to bits.

The last ten seconds of this represent such an intense confidence. He pulls it off with aplomb.

Tanaka pulled off some fantastic work, too. This tune reminds me that the older Nintendo composers actually generated melodies in their music...as if there were lyrics that could accompany them; something you could hum along to. I think their more recent composers try too hard to create work that shifts in line with what happens in the game; this results in music that's almost monotone, and lacks any sort of tune--it's mostly just a mood, and comes across as forgettable.

Interestingly, though, I think the fact that Link's Awakening and Super Mario Land had music that was somewhat atypical of their respective franchises is what gave them something of an exoticism; I liked the fact that they felt almost atypical.

I love the music on Wipeout, always great to race too

Most of my favourite retro tracks are from SNES games, really like the old synths

Super Aleste

Darius Twin

and the best of all - Unirally

Really needs more love, great game and great music

Wouldn't be surprised if someone recreated the unirally tracks for rock band or guitar hero, would be so much fun to play :)

It's a powerful bit of music--it effectively distills into one arrangements all the emotions that were up in the air after completing such a formidable adventure. Enchanting.

I've never played this game - apparently it's crap - but the music is pretty sweet.

Someone modded the second tune into the PC version of Guitar Hero 3:
