I had an extensive N64 collection back in the day, but I have no idea where any of it is. I went on a huge retro binge a few years ago in the depths of depression (one of the weird ways it presented itself was crippling nostalgia which led to me drunkenly, often tearfully, replaying old games - not a particularly healthy period of my life but *did* leave me with a relatively comprehensive '64 collection), but now I don't know where all the bits and bobs have ended up having been variously packed into storage and out again several times.

Gutted.

I remember when my parents bought me a Vectrex when I was young with about 15 games (everything in good nick). Then when they thought I was bored with it, sold it on for £40. :fp: :fp: Would've been worth a fair bit now.

I've even been to car boot sales recently where someone was selling a boxed NES for £80, saying to me "well it's retro and rare".

There's a car boot sale/market near where I lives and occationally you can get a wee bargain, PS1, all cables, 2 pads and 30 games for a tenner :datass:

BUT, there's a dude there nearly every strawberry floating week who goes around as a trader before us punters go in and buys all the car booty folk's games and systems and then literately sits at his stall, with his smart phone checking the prices on ebay to up all his prices up :x

Every PS2, gamecube and xbox game, unless it's a sports game, is flat a tenner or more, and anything older than that generation is just rediculious, last time I was there I was really tempted to pick up Tetris 2 on the gameboy, cart only, asked him what he'd want for it and he said £8! It's a rare game, rare my hole, something like that I'd be willing to go £2, strawberry floater doesn't haggle, might knock a pount or two off multible games but they're all over priced as it is.

I hate that guy.

TL;DR - local car booty ruined by a retro gaming trader.

That's him, guy. That's the literal personification of the attitude which is causing the rise in price of retro-games.

Bottom feeders coming in, buying up everything that's cheap and selling it on at an inflated price or simply flipping it onto eBay, based treating price guides compiled by the clueless like gospel.

I used to run into people like that at car boot sales, there was one old guy who was there very early looking for bargains. He got made at me (about 12 at the time) for snagging Front Mission 4 and a few other rare games for a pound each. He was furious when I got a 32X, Mega CD and Mega Drive 2 all-in-one for a fiver.

I used to adore carboots but then this trader started going every week. Him and the 4 other people he went with would buy up everything an hour before buyers were allowed in. He literally buys everything and then brags to me about his bargains, it's not strawberry floating impressive when you are going in early with four mates looking for stuff.

I would have been furious if you grabbed the never released in Europe Front Mission 4 for a pound, in fact I am writing this in a rage.

Best deal I ever got after the traders marked the carboot as their territory was the time I found wind waker with the bonus disc in a box of all sorts of rubbish for 50p. The traders only buy what is out in front of them, sadly most people put all their good stuff on show for obvious reasons.

A Sega Mega Drive with Mega CD and 32X for *five pounds* ..? Best-ever bargain.

. :).

I like the 32X; it's a glorious example of something that was the wrong thing at the wrong time but it still had a few jewels. I love it just for Space Harrier, After Burner Complete, Knuckles Chaotix and Star Wars Arcade. The complete Mega Drive / Mega CD / 32X setup is completely ridiculous and totally brilliant.

Sure it had a few games, but it was hands down the worst thing SEGA ever did. Mega CD though

I hate that kind of gooseberry fool. I did once go to a car boot that was really just my dad's neighbour in their shared courtyard. I got devil my cry, tekken tag tournament and ico for £10. Along with Marantz 75w amp for another tenner.

My brother used to work at gamestation and would occasionally snap up any decent retro games that were traded in - for the same price customers would pay for them, then the store manager decided that staff couldn't buy used games after a customer complained.

A couple of weeks later a pristine copy of Panzer Dragoon Saga arrived in store so my brother asked a friend to buy it on his behalf. shortly before his friend arrived, the store manager saw the game and bought it himself despite saying staff couldn't buy used games.

My brother was fuming.

I wonder how many of these bootsale dealers actually get the inflated prices they ask for? Surely they must have a load of literally worthless stock that not even the most casual of casuals will buy for that price?

Indeed they need to price for market, if they want those prices then go to eBay otherwise make profit on volume if they're being bought for peanuts. Pretty sad thing to do really. Plus they have to pay for their stall!

You say that but there is a shop in my area that is like those games stalls and they actually sell games for more than ebay prices, and people pay for them too! They sold Twilight Princess on Gamecube for £60 the other week. People will pay for anything it seems, they've also managed to sell a boxed tatty Street Fighter 2 SNES (£100), Pokemon Stadium 2 cart only (£40), Final Fantasy VII (£25), pokemon blue cart only (£20), unboxed sega saturn (£50). People will buy anything it seems.

Well that is just the misinformed and genial laziness, also there is the social quality and "retail therapy" of a shop front. It is much easier to sell something with a physical shopfront like that, and when the price is fixed it's a case of "want it then pay for it", you also have the contextualisation with other games so the prices seem relative

In the case of boot fairs, it's a different market, as people are looking to haggle and find bargains. I myself won't usually pick up anything unless I know it's a bargain, however in a place like cex I might behave differently. My value proposition might be more like, "this is an 8/10 game that appeals to me, I'll get x hours of gameboy for y, oh go on then". These things are very fickle.

On a related note, I keep flip-flopping on whether to keep or sell my Cube.

Anyway, unboxed it at the weekend to check it still works (obviously it does: Nintendium  ) and fired up Rogue Leader.

Great stuff, I love that game. It was brilliant apart from the smeary TV picture using the standard composite lead. Annoying because once upon a time I definitely had decent Cube cables and now I don't know where they are. So I looked up a Cube component cable and found they go for over £100?! WTF?*

Anyway, if I can find a decent solution I think I'll keep the 'cube and install it properly when we move house. Just a fully-wired scart might be an option, I guess.

* It did also occur to me that that was the first time I'd tried to use the Cube on an HDTV, so that may have had an impact as well.
