Someone on DeviantArt made a few 'remake' backgrounds:

I like the Link's house one.

I want all of those games to be remade looking like they do there.

I think Metroid would actually be too dark to play.

And the Zelda one actually winds up looking a fair bit like Four Swords

The Super Mario World one has too little to distinguish between foreground and background elements, thus leaving the player unsure of where he can stand.
