I only found out about this through the magazine and I'm genuinely sad about Paul's passing. He created the wonderful Mercenary, my favourite game on the Commodore 64. Fast vector graphics, a large area to explore, funny features (who can forget the ultra-fast cheese ship? ) and exciting gameplay. Thanks for the great time, Paul :toot: .

Ironically I just bought this about half an hour ago so I'll be giving it a read over the weekend. Looking forward to the BBC Micro piece as it was the first computer I ever owned. Mum was a teacher and Dad got me disks full of copied legitimate games. Good times. Been thinking about picking up one from eBay for dat nostalgia.

I didn't know Metal Gear Solid came out on Game Boy. Was it released in the UK?

OPM tried to get Konami to re-release Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake onto PSone in 2003 or 2004 (a lot of publishers were releasing old games like James Pond Robocod and Baldies at that point) but I don't think Konami were interested for some bizarre reason.

Pretty sure it got a UK release. It was a GBC game and is actually damn good. Well worth playing.

Yeah, it sure did - I have a boxed copy that I picked up from the old MVC chain of entertainment stores on launch :-).

I think it only got a low print run, though, and it is one of the games that now goes for relatively high prices on the GBC; anywhere from £40 to £70 for complete copies according to recent eBay "sold" records.

Disappointed I missed out on it now. I recall GBC and Advance games being very expensive though (the same price as a console title) and they never seemed to come down in price that much.

I never played as many Colour and Advance games as I would have liked (the GBC was practically the Pokemon Blue and Tetris machine) as when it came down to it I always plumped for a PS1 game instead.

It is a good offer and I'm thinking of subscribing, too. I usually pick up a copy each month and I always enjoy reading through it. I'm glad they they now regard PS2, 'Cube and Xbox as "retro", too... they are about sixteen years old now :) .

They're two removed from current Gen(three for the 'Cube) - I think it's only right that some nostalgia is attached to them! :)

Thank you kindly for posting the subscription offer Jawa, really is about time I got back on this gem of a mag

And yeah, GCN/PS2/Xbox gen is both old enough and with enough of its own historically interesting quirks that it can easily be counted as retro. The image 'retro' inspires in the context of games will almost certainly still be 8/16-bit visuals, but its scope doesn't have to be limited to that as time goes on.
