Am i the only one that would spend countless hours playing Ocarina of Time , Goldeneye , Sypro or Turok on the N64 and PS1 then playing Grand Theft Auto IV on the 360/PS3. The older games just seem to be more fun. More games in todays marketplace advertise "Expansive worlds, 5000 sq miles" and " Real Life Graphics". I'm not one for being sucked in for graphics or huge worlds, I'm a person who loves the quality and effort put into games,

Who else agree's?

I probably spend about equal times on both. Although I do have Project64 installed at work, in case I get bored.

Sort off, kind off... The limitations of older consoles often meant more on the imagination side. 'Nowadays' it does sometimes feel like quantity over quality. Badly explained - too much to drink - at this time of night on a saturday - but this is why, when I find people moaning re the 'limitations' of the island on wii-sports-on-fucking-holiday I tend too lose faith. Its all about the graphix - no, no it isn't , - which is why chess is still going strong after all these years.

Sorry, worst strawberry floating explanation ever.. but I partially agree with you. Without wishing to employ the old rose tinted glasses....

I've found there's an increasing number of games today that are well made yet not really appealing to me personally, which is perhaps why I side more towards retro these days. Even modern releases I play tend to have retro stylings. That's not to say I dislike modern stuff though, but at the same time retro gaming is cheap (unless you're going into rare games!), fun and just a little more immediate and charming at times. I say the two should co exist in any gamer's diet!

In NGC days I would play more Nintendo 64 than Gamecube wise.

Nowdays I just play current-gen games, the only past-gen games I'll play is Tetris/Pokémon Red on GBC and that'd be every couple of hours and that's it. I think it's just not having time/room to set up my older consoles and that my NES console isn't working very well :(

Which means I should put away Saturn/PS2, they're just taking up too much room and I need to tidy up my room.

The only thing would change is download stores. VC, PSN, Steam & XBLA is great way to re-play older games on current-gen consoles. I don't need to dig up Mega Drive anymore just to play Sonic, I can simply turn on 360 and pick Sonic :)

Spyro isn't on the N64.

Before this gen, I mainly played retro titles.

However this gen, now that I have a constant flow of large income, I tend to play a lot more recent games then anything else

Hm... I agree that there are a lot of older titles still worth playing but I think it's a slightly botched viewpoint to consider older games in general as better than current ones. After all, we only remember the classic games; the ones that have stood the test of time simply because they're great. In ten years time perhaps some of these current games will work their way into your affections in just the same way? Who knows.

I probably spend about equal time playing both. For example, I'm currently playing Deus Ex and I'm looking at possibly starting Grim Fandango (for the first time! :o ) soon, but I've also just started Galaxy again (which is mega) and I'm playing quite a bit of Rainbow Six Vegas 2. So a nice good mix. :)

I'm a bit like this at the moment actually.

It was mostly a coincidence when having played PS2 and PSOne games via my PS3 on my HDTV and having been unimpressed with how some of them looked and played (PES6 lagged horribly) I decided to dig out my old trusty 14" CRT and play the games on my PSTwo with an RGB cable and I immediately got into the PS2 library again. It helps that games for it are so dirt cheap nowadays and the library is so diverse, and I've been picking up games for a fiver here and a tenner there for about 6 months now and having a blast. The new (old) setup has also led to a resurgence in my Virtual Console purchasing too, as NES games for example don't translate well to an HD screen but hold up nicely on a smaller CRT.

That's not to say I've actively shunned current gen games, although despite having a few games on my 'to buy' list in truth I haven't bought a PS3 game since FIFA 09 almost a year ago now, and I've only bought one Wii retail release this year. I just find PS2 stuff especially is a better value proposition and I'm more inclined to take a chance on games of that price than I am on more expensive current gen games.

The obvious downside is that I've amassed quite the backlog of games I want to play, which I doubt I'll ever get through entirely.

I still prefer the PS2 & PSone offerings over this generation for their time. Racers aside - this generation has dissappointed me no end. We're promised big (Assassin's Creed, KZ2 etc.), but in the end each game is following a simple age-old concept with nicer graphics. Hell, some games have decreased their offerings which has me annoyed, Madden's Franchise is a skeleton compared to 2005, and PES has tons of omissions. Everything still likes to remind me that I'm playing a videogame (GTA4's phone ironically enough as it aimed for the opposite, was perhaps the worst) - I really thought this generation could step away from that.

I tend not to enjoy DLC games, which doesn't really help my case. Nothing has the charm of the old games, there's not enough decent platformers out there anymore, I'm talking without guns. MGS decided to take a leaf out of its storyline methods, and make its controls more complicated than they needed to be in their dissappointing MGS2-troll-pleasing climax. I still play MGS1, I still play MGS2 on a regular basis, I haven't played MGS4 since July last year, only beat it twice - something which I hate saying as I really wanted to love it.

Fixed. I've been playing the hell out of PES6 for a couple of weeks now, and I absoultely love it to bits. In fact, I don't think I've played a game of FIFA 09 on PS3 since I returned to it. It's just so damn satisfying to play.

It should say a lot when my most played game of the last few months is Skies of Arcadia. I think thbis gen will be seen as nothing more than a transitionary period in the end, with devs experimenting with open worlds, motion controls and HD graphics but struggling to tighten games together instead of wandering through miles of empty space (Twilight Princess), Staring at Brown and Grey interiors (Gears of War) of having to download patches to get games to work (PS3 Orange Box)

A smaller game world with more to do as opposed to a gigantic world full of nothing is always preferable. It speaks volumes that the best open-world game out there is still San Andreas, and that was made on a 10-year old console and the best gameplay experience of this generation is arguably Mario Galaxy which has a very old skool level-by-level structure.
