Okay, I'm looking into spending some of my MS points on some retro classics on XBLA. Which ones would you guys recommend? And are there any I should avoid at all costs?

I realise this could go in Ask the Forum, but perhaps it can spark a debate on what you look for a good retro port/update or something.

When you say retro, what are you looking for? A port of a very old game? A new game with retro sensibilities? A game from the beginning of XBLA?

I presume you mean the first one. Galaga and Track and Field are great in my opinion, obviously if you've played either one before theres nothing new there.

For something a bit more modern theres Streets of Rage 2, Gunstar Heroes, Doom etc. Not really anything not already well known.

Wouldn't call either of those 'Retro' personally, certainly not Rez anyway.

Rez was retro in 2001. The graphics are straight up Vector wireframes, the gameplay is classic on rail shooter, the music though made all that seem so fresh and new.

I was thinking of stuff like the recent Final Fight, where an old game has been tarted up a little bit with excellent presentation and bonus stuff. I'd say Banjo and Perfect Dark fit because they're essentially the same as they were, just with an HD makeover.

When someone says 'Retro' I immediately think 8bit games, then perhaps think about some 16bit stuff.

Calling anything only 1 generation old (so that'd be Rez and Ikaruga) 'Retro' is just wrong.

Retro is more than the time of when a game was released. Look at Mega Man 9/10, are they retro? Yes, they may be new games, but they are made with retro style ideals. Geometry Wars? Again retro by design not age.

Retro is a culturally outdated or aged style, trend, mode, or fashion

Basically, Retro is anything that isn't current, so anything going from the Gamecube/PS2/Dreamcast backwards.

So would a retrospective of a pre-PS2 era game be incorrectly named? Don't be daft.

'Retro' basically means something which is related to things past. If it was originally made for a console that's no longer being produced, then why can't it be termed 'retro'? After all, the consoles themselves are consigned to history's dustbin, ergo they're from the past rather than the present.
