Retro stuff I once owned and now regret selling

Hi

I was just having a look through my Dropbox when I stumbled across the majority of my retro stuff I had to part ways with when I got the 'happy' news that we were going to have a baby.

Here's my link have a skeg at it. Sorry some pics are upside down. The Nintendo 64 is particularly painful for parting with. My favourite console ever. USA model. RGB modded for superior picture (there's a pic of Mario 64 running with composite cable and then true RGB cable), inserts removed so plays JPN games natively and replaced the analogue for GameCube replacements while not perfect were better than the slack wobbly gooseberry fool fest they were.

Also that white Saturn was pretty fecking sweet too. Mod chipped played all regions and back ups. 4mb memory expansion. Nights 3D controller.

My super famicom mint boxed console and game pictures other than Mario World are missing which is a bit of a bummer.

I had to give up my babies for the sake of space and money. What about you? Do you have something that you wish you had kept hold of? Why did you part with it? Perhaps did you ever make a silly trade? (I swapped Mario Kart 64 for Diddy Kong Racing back in the day :fp: )

Not me, but my brother sold our SNES and a massive library of games in 97. :fp: Never forgiven him for it.

My ZX81 16k RAM pack, because a friend only had the base 1k machine and really wanted it, and I'd already got a Spectrum. It's the only thing I've ever let go.

And I was looking at them on eBay yesterday.

I got rid of Symphony Of The Night a few years ago, the rather lovely edition with the art book and music CD. I regretted it the minute I left the post office.

Best trade ever in my humble opinion.

I think I can top you.

I sold the following which were all brand new, boxed and complete (having been bought and stored by me) and collected over 20 years:

1. NES with 70 games including all the rare Capcom and Konami ones.

2. SNES with 40 games, including US games like Earthbound, Chrono Trigger and many others which now fetch £200+ on eBay.

3. N64 with 30 games - all Nintendo and Rare classics.

4. Gameboy, GBC, GBA with about 40 games - again all mint boxed etc.

5. GameCube with 30 games.

6. Dreamcast with 30 games.

I sold them in a moment of madness. I didn't need the money at the time, but thought it would be quite nice to have the extra cupboard space :fp:

I also sold them before the prices went crazy on eBay, so didn't even get that much.

I regretted it almost immediately...and have spent the past 15 years slowly rebuilding the exact collection, again all mint and boxed...have a long way to go though!

Mostly N64 and GameCube stuff. Off the top of my head Conker's Bad Fur Day, Paper Mario, Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes and Skies of Arcadia Legends.

On the flip side I made double what I'd paid for Secret of Mana when I traded it in at funnily enough the very same Gamestation I bought it from (£39.99 vs £80.00) and similarly I doubled my money on Chibi Robo recently at CeX (I paid £20 sealed in box and got £40 odd back for it).

Although I'm sure some of the complete in box NES games I had would have brought a decent price nowadays too.

Sounds like a great trade to me!

I've only ever traded in/got rid of two games, and one of them I regret - Klonoa Beach Volleyball for PS1. It was the only PS1 game I owned (now I also own MGS1, so I've owned 2 PS1 games in my life) and now I really want to rebuy it. I need to do some ebaying at some point.

I traded in a mint copy of Panzer Dragoon Saga shortly after the Dreamcast launch for barely a few pounds.

Unfortunately when I was a skint school pupil and student, I've sold great collections of games and accessories including a Megadrive, SNES, N64, PlayStation and Dreamcast - basically anything pre 2004 (when I got my first full time teaching job).

However, with increasing numbers of grown-up commitments, I'm finding I'm flogging stuff that I would have otherwise collected, including games that I have bought updated versions of (e.g. I'm flogging my Zelda Collector's Edition Promotional Gamecube disc on ebay currently, along with some other stuff).

Blatant self-promotion:

That's quite a collection. What a shame.

My Master System with about forty mint boxed games; including Power Strike I and II. Sold the lot for something ridiculous like £30 :( .

My Asian Mega Drive (played UK, USA and Japanese games) with ten Japanese titles for almost peanuts :( .

I still feel a little bit of pain when I think about those two sales.

That must be costing a fortune.

It is...which it's why it's taking so long...I sold the games in 2006, and started collecting again in 2007 :fp:

I dread to think how much I've spent so far...and I have paid some crazy amounts - the worst was probably £200 for Megaman 1 and £180 for Castlevania 3 on the NES :fp:

At least back then I had money from a job. Now I'm self employed it's much tougher to afford anything...and if it wasn't for some ok-priced N64 games, I wouldn't really have bought anything for years.

My complete collection of the Japanese Bit Generation GBA Games, Conkers Bad Fur Day (N64) and Legend of the Mystical Ninja 1 & 2 on Nintendo DS I regret selling the most.

Not quite something I sold, but something annoying in retrospect.

In 1995, our village decided to open a youth club again. There'd been one years before but it had died out, and everything belonging to the old youth club was in a cupboard in the village hall. On the first week of opening, we looked in that cupboard as a group to see if there was anything worth keeping. Among the ping pong tables and deflated footballs, there were two old gaming systems that we'd not seen before. We plugged them in, they worked for a bit, then they stopped. A few thumps couldn't get them going again, so I volunteered to chuck them away.

And that's the story of how I personally threw two Vectrex consoles into the bin.

My word!

I have never played on a Vectrex and I'd like to one day.

The only console I've traded was my N64 for the original GBA. Probably not a great deal in hindsight, but I wasn't overly keen on the N64 at that point. I still have my SNES and brick GB though, maybe I'll grace the retro weekend topic with some pictures one day.

Lovers of retro hardware, do not read the below

I once threw a working Atari VCS (with games), BBC Micro and Atari ST (all with games, mainly pirated) away at the tip. I just didn't want them cluttering up the place.

Such a loss  Automation disk 97 (Dungeon Master, Oids and 3d Pool) accounted for about 6 months of my life.

I traded in my GBASP for my first DS since I still had my normal GBA.

I regret it, but my Dad said (because it was a very early Birthday present (he did this to buy me things that I wanted I think, I'm thankful)) it was either that or wait. What a great decision it was though. DS was awesome.
