MEGATON

Video game peripherals company Hyperkin has announced the RetroN 4, a console that allows you to play NES, SNES, Game Boy Advance, and Sega Genesis cartridges on a television through HDMI.

The RetroN 4 will pack cartridge slots for each of the aforementioned system, two controller ports for each console, and also includes a Bluetooth controller. The console will output video via HDMI and both NTSC and PAL cartridges will work with the console.

The operating system will allow players to select platforms, reassign controls, and other yet to be announced features as well.

Hyperkin already offers the RetroN 3 (pictured). The product is compatible with NES, SNES, Super Famicom, Sega Genesis and Mega Drive cartridges, and includes S-video and composite video output.

"As this is an ambitious project for Hyperkin, our goal for this system is to combine modern gaming convenience to not only cater to the retro gaming community, but to also introduce a new generation of gamers to the classic games that have shaped the present gaming landscape," said Steven Mar, Hyperkin's executive director.

The company plans to fully unveil the hardware on March 23rd, at the Midwest Gaming Classic trade show in Wisconsin.

That could be pretty fantastic. Combine that with a machine that can play Amiga, ST, Spectrum and Commodore 64 games (I realise you can get all these on emulators but I'm talking about something like the OP which is a single unit that can handle the original media formats) and you have a pretty amazing retro experience from just 2 machines.

I'm pretty sure this isn't the first of it's kind.

A console that plays both Sega AND Nintendo cartridges is fundamentally wrong and the makers of this monstrosity should be burned at the stake.

I wonder if you could use the Master System adaptor for Megadrive on it to make it compatible with the whole shebang?

Brilliant idea for those who have a large collection of games and a console that is not working.

Console looks a mess, but with so many ports would it be anything else?

What we need is a tiny HDMI enabled Dreamcast!

Looks like something Morphy Richards would make.

Make it so.

It looks awful but I like the concept.

Miniature versions of old consoles featuring HDMI output and software for upscaling would be awesome. Will never officially happen of course because it means companies wouldn't be able to get us to pay again for the same games. :fp:

Beats the Wii mini. And the Wii.

I assume its an emulation based console, the sound quality will probably be a bit iffy and there's likely to be some games that won't work due to extra gubbins in the carts (SuperFX SNES games/Virtua Racing .etc).

The picture is of the RetroN 3 , the fourth version hasn't been revealed yet; this is just the announcement.

Having said that, it probably won't look too dissimilar (i.e. like gooseberry fool) so although it's a good idea it won't sell - surely the target market for a product like this is people with those old games cartridges who'd want a machine to play them on in their front room? I'd wager most of us would rather make do with emulators/the original consoles/ports, than have something that looks like that in the living room.

This won't be compatible with a lot of games if the RetroN 3 is anything to go by.

It looks exactly like the RetroN 3... oh wait, that's because it is!

The RetonN 4 hasn't been revealed yet, we won't see it till nearer the end of March.

The Nextbox is allegedly 3 computers in one. This is four. Well played.
