I think it looks absolutely horrible. What possessed them to go with that art style, unless the budget is so low they aren't allowed to actually animate anything properly.

It looks nicer to me than both the original pixel art and the dressing up of the pixel versions in the recent remaster. (contemplates hiding for a while)

Yeah not sure I like the look of that.
It's like a modern Shockwave Flash game

I do get where Ron Gilbert is coming from with his defence of the visuals - each game in the series really has had a look that is very much its own so it shouldn't be too shocking to see them go somewhere new again visually. But for me they've gone to a bad place!

I love the idea that we're going back to visit some old locations and characters though, there's so much history to play about with in the series that it makes sense - just hope they do it justice.

Still think the weedy voice acting from Dominic Armato is entirely wrong for the character though - he's never really been the same since getting full voice acting, the whole characterisation of Guybrush just doesn't fit right with who I saw the character as in 1 and 2.

I personally want the characters to be animated like a Disney cartoon but that way of doing things is dead these days outside of indie-games which are still happy to retain that pixelated look. HD/4K era has killed it.

Even cutscenes, which used to be an actual cartoon (where each picture was hand drawn, connected together, and then ran at whatever fps it was to make all of 5 seconds of video...), is another non-starter because it's cost prohibitive. Now characters both in-game and with non-playable cutscenes tend to slide or glide across the 2D backgrounds.

South Park suits the current method perfectly. You literally get the cartoon.

I wonder if this coming to Switch as a console exclusive means Switch will also get the previous games before this launches?

I understand the comments about the art style. I really love the designer's work - Tearaway was fantastic - but it is far from what I was expecting. However, I'm just so happy that this is being made and there's a charm to it all the ssme. I'll reserve judgement until I can see it on good quality TV.

I think good hand drawn animation almost always looks better than puppet rigged animation, but this at least looks to have high production values.

THAT'S the game I was trying to think of yesterday, totally feels like the same style. So that makes sense now.

Some interesting tidbits in the D23 developer's update video released over the weekend . Apparently there's going to be a n in-game journal included to read about the story so far and, as was hinted in the video, all games in the series will be considered cannon. Really flies at odds with other reports saying this picks up straight after MI2 and is a direct sequel. My money is on the opening prologue being a little explainer of how we get back from the ending of MI2 and then there's a time hop to after Tales of Monkey Island. Not long to find out...

Gonna try and blast through SoMI and MI2 this week I think, just to get back up to speed with everything Monkey in time for RtMI.

Tangentially related, but I finally ticked "The Dig" off my P&C todo list last night.
Decent game, lovely polish and presentation (For the time at least) but it's let down a little by being a bit too wordy at times and having some big leaps of logic (Had to look a couple of things up). Robert Patrick voices the main character and it's a decent enough wee story with some nice art work and locations. The humour's a bit dry compared to other Lucasarts games though. Worth a shot for fans of the genre.

Looking at either Simon the Sorceror or Discworld as my next one (After Monkey). Both of which I've played in the past, though I never finished either of them. Discworld especially was full of moon-logic from what I remember.

I remember really liking Simon the Sorcerer back in the day, but I was just a naïve child desperate for a P&C fix and wowed by the fact it had Chris Barrie doing the voice ("OMG it's Rimmer off Red Dwarf!!111!!")

In reality it's a bit gooseberry fool and Barrie 100% phones it in!

Still got a soft spot for the Discworld games, even if they are definitely guilty of some crazy ass puzzle logic. The final one, Discworld Noir, is genuinely great though!

That was my worry with Simon.

I'm leaning towards DW to be honest. Eric Idle was great as Rincewind. So we'll see how we get on with that.

Well I managed to get through MI 1 & 2 in time. Finished MI2 last night for the first time in at least a decade, maybe two. Phenomenal game (Though I think I prefer Fate of Atlantis).

My understanding is that this one should unlock on PC around 5pm, which sucks as I'd wanted to spend most of today playing it.

Still, looking forward to this.
