Riccitiello: Current hardware cycle to be “very extended”

Speaking in a just-ended investor call, EA boss John Riccitiello has reiterated EA Sports president Peter Moore’s sentiments on the state of the hardware cycle last month, saying we’re nowhere near to seeing a full switch over in main platforms.

“Big changes are not something we’re seeing the need for in the medium term, nor do we expect that in the medium term,” he said.

“I think that arms race - I can never say that it’s done - but the relevance of doing that faster and faster seems to have subsided.

“We’re projecting… [the current generation] to be a very extended cycle.”

Peter Moore told VG247 in London recently that he had seen “no inkling” of future platforms from the major hardware companies, and that the current generation could be the “biggest ever” in terms of sales.

Good. I don't need a damn PS4 or 720 anytime soon. Let's see a couple (Or even one!) entries per franchise on this one first.

1 GTA
1 MGS
0 Hitman*
0 Timesplitters
0 SSX

Let's have these.

etc.

*Was a last-gen port, tbh.

It might, now that Free Radical is part of Crytek.

I can actually see alot of the consoles this gen getting upgrades, either through hardware, software or both. (NXE has kinda kick started that)

Yeah, I see this happening more than a complete new hardware shift. Even Microsoft surely can't afford to run the risk at this time?

I keep hearing 2011 as a possibilty for talk of next gen systems. But I'd be more than happy to wait years for anything new to come out.

Apparently Michael Pachter has challenged John Riccitiello to a punch up after work.

It really doesn't feel like i've had my 360 for that long, even though it's coming up to being 4 years old. I'd be more than happy to wait another 4 or 5 years till Xbox 3.

Bioware seemed confident that we'd see the Mass Effect trilogy all on the Xbox 360. I wonder how many Halo game we'll see on the 360? I wouldn't be suprised if its at least double the amount we saw on Xbox 1.

I didn't know that. I thought that Free Radical was completely finished.
