you'll like it, it does exactly what it says on the tin.

The oppressed are allowed once every few years to decide which particular representatives of the oppressing class are to represent and repress them in parliament.

How closely does the film follow the plot of the book?

Didn't really enjoy it. Some of the action scenes were silly, but it took itself too seriously. Abe should have had his beard as a kid and gone 'it's Lincoln time' when he went off to vanquish some vamps.

If you have anything more worthwhile to say about Prometheus, feel free to start talking about it again.

He's right. Start a thread by all means but we don't need any more ALVH stuff in here.

Why were... directions to the secret weapons base left via cave paintings around Earth?

EDIT: Just browsed through the topic and it seems nobody knows.

It's in the abridged Prometheus script.

I think the director's cut of Prometheus will answer/fill-in some the plot holes.

Or make things ten times worse :slol:

EDIT: Just browsed through the topic and it seems nobody knows.

Given that the cave paintings were presumably made by humans rather than engineers, the real question is "when did Humans learn that particular pattern of planets and associate them with the engineers".

It's not hard to imagine some protohuman seeing the holographic spheres David style. It's basically freak coincidence that the spheres chosen just happened be the ones that contain what they do.

It's probably the case that any of the planets on the "map" could have resulted in an interesting Engineer related discovery. It's just sheer chance that led us to the one which happened to contain what are presumably bioweapons.

any film that leaves a shitload of obvious questions like that isn't a very good film IMO. Has lindelof-disease all over it.

Love that video, "Is he an expert in things that have never happened?" edit: gooseberry fool, he says something about there's a weapons research facility? I missed that :fp:

And also this, may have already been posted but meh
http://digitaldigging.net/prometheus-an-archaeological-perspective/

With Prometheus, there were a few bits that I immediately thought, what the strawberry float, how can they be so stupid?
-Charlize Theron being the most incompetent 'captain' or whatever she's supposed to be, ever. She sets one of her team on fire, is too busy getting laid to listen for/watch over those two guys who get stranded outside, and finally, can't run sideways out of the way of a giant rolling space ship. Her character was just dreadful :fp:
-Noomi giving birth to a squid thing, and just jumping in the surgery pod and getting sliced and stitched, having a squid pulled out, having ran away from a bunch of people (I think?) just to get in it, only to run back off and pretend nothing has happened, and tell no one. WAT?

There are so many dumb things I didn't really notice until they were pointed out to me afterwards. I enjoyed the film, I loved the effects and the ship was cool and Michael Fassbot was awesome, I just didn't pick up on a lot of the stupidity or laziness at the time. I think what I disliked the most was just the overall incompetence and impatience of the crew as a whole.

There was a strange atmosphere before and after the film that I've never seen attending any other film. I'm trying not to be offensive, but the audience were predominantly made of stereotypical-looking "nerds", in a very noticeable way. Loads of chatter beforehand about Alien, and afterwards, almost everyone who went in huddled together in groups to rage about what they'd just seen. It seemed there were a lot of very high expectations for Prometheus. I don't know Alien lore and I didn't have massive expectations, so I think that's why I enjoyed it more. To be honest, I just wish I hadn't seen any trailers beforehand because I would've loved to have experienced the "woah, it's a giant space ship!" moment and go "woah, it's a giant space ship!", rather than, "oh, so we're up to that bit in the trailer where they realise it's a giant space ship."

She's not the Captain. She's the corporate overseer. Essentially, she gets the role of Burke from Aliens.

As such the responsibility for leaving two crew members unattended falls squarely on Captain Blackman, who decided he'd slip her a length rather than keep an eye on Glasses McScientist and Stupid O'Wolfy (and really, who could blame him? strawberry float, if the alternative was listening to those two gooseberry fool their pants, I'd rather have slept with Scottish O'Haggard the "nurse").

Also, incinerating the infected crewmember is actually uncommonly genre-savvy. If they'd done the same to John Hurt in Alien, it'd have been a much shorter (and significantly less enjoyable) movie.

The only line of hers I remember is "It's my job to make sure you do yours". If scientist man and geologist man are out there experiencing the science and rocks, surely she should be overseeing that? Surely anyone on that ship (also the two co-pilots? The other two guys that stood at the front of the ship, or whatever) could've been in there watching and listening. They're supposed to be experts, if not, at least a team, if not that, at least have some passing interest in what's going on outside the ship, they've all been asleep for two years, they've finally arrived on a new planet, and two people are still out there in it. Surely someone could have and should have stayed to see what they did. David could've done it? (Or was he experimenting with black goo at that point?) In fact didn't the co-pilot guys listen to them for a while and mock them? Noomi's boyfriend could've stayed to listen since he was so miserably bummed about not immediately bumping into an Engineer, those two guys might! The more I question this film the less I like it

Don't get me wrong, the film is pretty shoddy and raises way more questions that it bothers to ever answer.

However: The guy you identify as "co-pilot" is the pilot. But his job depends on the company, which ostensibly puts Theron "in charge", at least where matters don't concern the ship itself. She's got no interest in flying the ship, and defers to his experience, so he's got at least some clout.(Of course, since Weylund is on board, that makes him supreme head-honcho and since Davis is attached to him, rather than Theron, that gives him a lot of leeway in what he does - it's kind of best to think of him as Weylund's "avatar".)

A few other questions (but serious ones that I know someone can answer) edit: don't think it helps that I'm only coming round to this a month or so after seeing the film

What/where was the weapons facility? I've seen this mentioned a couple of times and I completely missed it in the film.
And what was the meaning of the section before the film starts, where one of the engineers is by a waterfall and drinks something and falls apart?

Watched it last night, thought it was decent enough if a little slow. Was it me or did Theron's character serve literally no purpose in the film.
