Not if you've just spent a load of dosh on a 4K telly and are desperate for content.

That'd be me then, but I'll settle for Shadow of Mordor on the Pro. Or something. Cost next to nowt.

I am tempted by the X though, the hardware itself is just lovely, but as I own a Switch and now a Pro I'd have to make time for it to justify buying one.

So far this year, I have eaten NO mince pies.

The best video game I've ever played. BY A COUNTRY MILE. Even better than 3D Seiddab Attack.

Referring to a comment Jawa made, Microsoft weren't pilloried for releasing a less powerful console, people took umbrage at the fact it was more expensive and Kinect was compulsory.

And referring to a comment Buff made, I don't think the Pro is a mistake; at worst it would be a relatively uncostly failed experiment. It's sales figures aren't bad if you consider that it's the more expensive option and that 4K TVs are still massively outnumbered by HDTVs. Personally I'm glad it exists, once boost mode came out, buying one seemed like a no-brainer to me.

Uhm... well... I dunno, Octo... I can recall the months (years?) of talk and forum posting about how the XBO "couldn't do" 1080p; so much so that it was almost comical  . Sony made a huge advertising push behind the PS4 being the "world's most powerful console". Sure, the XBO launch price, Kinect and the "can't share discs" fiasco didn't help MS... but much of the perception about the Sony console was that it was more powerful than the XBO.

Octoroc wrote:...I don't think the Pro is a mistake...

Yeah, I don't think it was, either. However, I wish Sony had taken an approach of making it far more clearer to the user about how the extra power was being utilised by games. Even now, not many games seem to have clear menu options for using the power... well, not much beyond "near 4K" or "60 FPS", anyway. Don't get me wrong - I own and really like the console! - but I feel that Pro utilisation is pretty murky for the most part.

Yeah 3rd party Pro support has been pretty disappointing, but as I haven't actually played any PS4 games yet I'm not particularly arsed. My cup runneth over.

UPDATE 26/8/17 2:00pm: Digital Foundry has returned from Gamescom and the first order of business is to take a good, hard look at the press assets Square-Enix has revealed for the Xbox One X version of Rise of the Tomb Raider, and to see how they compare with the existing versions of the game. John Linneman has compiled all of his findings into the video analysis below and we've also provided PS4 Pro and PC settings comparison shots to match Square's press images.

There are some interesting observations here - clearly, the top-end PC textures are incorporated into the Xbox One X version as expected (indeed, one shot even shows additional detail we couldn't replicate on PC). Additionally, other changes have been made: on the plus side, PureHair (aka TressFX) seems to get an upgrade, but there's a puzzling downgrade in depth of field rendering. We'll have more on this title as soon as we can.

Probably thought they could pull the same trick Sony did in 1997 through 2000 for PlayStation. I guess they overestimated the pulling power of Tomb Raider in 2014, and the Xbox brand was in such poor shape to boot, enough people weren’t then going to purchase an Xbox specifically just to play it. To make matters worse, it then appeared to damage sales of the game on the PS4…though I’m sure that £100 million sure helped mitigate that for Square Enix.

£100M. Wow.

Having enjoyed the 1st tomb raider reboot game I turned rise off after 30 mins. Just didn’t enjoy it. I am now tempted to pick up shadow though, and play through that. Reviews seem good.

$100m is a lot but I wonder how the publishers felt about the deal. I wonder if not being on PS4 for awhile hurt the franchises momentum

Rise was okay but turned into a bit of a chore. The first reboot game was much better. I haven't played Shadow because I've heard mixed things.

Went back and played this last year and absolutely strawberry floating loved it. First time playing, I hated it. Sometimes enjoyment of a game really does depend on your mood at the time.

Then I played Shadow straight after and loved that one as well, despite the woefully bad story.

I think the "open world" parts added a lot of unnecessary padding that ruined the pacing. They should have kept it more linear throughout.

I really enjoyed the whole Tomb Raider reboot trilogy, solid action games and I will likely play through them again one day

I think I got to some semi open snowy area in this and gave up at that point, it just didn't give me enough reason to push on really. I though the first reboot was okay but really wanted them to build on that in significant ways for the sequel which didn't seem to be what we got sadly.

The original TR1 is still the best in the series for me

Lara was a much more compelling character in the first game in comparison to Rise too.

Hmm. I have loads of games but Eneba had shadow for like £8 and I was tempted.

Maybe I’ll just carry on with Xcom 2/start humankind and some others smaller bits.

I have really enjoyed all 3 of the Tomb Raider games and recently replayed the first one via FPS boost on Series X. Thought it still holds it's head above the water despite being 6-7 yrs old.

Same, I think in the past two years I played and finished all three of them on the ps4. Got all of them were really cheap via some sale on the store.

I much preferred Shadow, but I think that was mostly down to the setting.
