I'm not really suggesting anything as much as I am pointing out that we turn games into genres by borrowing from their design. You can call it a Smash Bros rip-off/clone but that's what video games are. Popular games are not so much standalone titles as much as they are entire genres. I don't think there's anything wrong with taking shots at the thing your game concept came from, especially when people have understandable frustrations about the designers game design philosophy. It's competition at the end of the day.

Jezo wrote:Project M is another good example of how the dev team straight up just changed moves to better suit the characters' strengths. Ganondorf got a completely new neutral B to help with movement and mixup options to make him more viable. Ivysaur too, making her more viable and giving a focus to the playstyle for that character. Obsessive tinkering is exactly what's needed to balance a fighting game.

Yeah, Project M did come to mind and I almost mentioned it as an example where I wasn't really bothered with moveset changes - because to me the game felt like it was still in beta and crafting its own identity.

@DML - But you talk as if Rivals of Aether is just Smash and nothing more. I mean, obviously, to each their own, but Rivals of Aether does a lot of things better than Smash and continues to strive to be something more. Also, what Fornace said regarding Sakurai is 100% true, and if Sakurai doesn't like it then don't do the things we make fun of him for.

Its just a bit rich to take the piss out of the guy for one design flaw when you have basically stolen 100 others from him with a straight face. I'm not sure where the argument is opposing that really!

Rivals of Aether is fine, but its not like its a better game than Smash.

I would definitely argue that Rivals of Aether is at least a better game than Smash 4.

A few design flaws.

And no it isn't - no matter how maligned Smash 4 is.

If you dislike 4 then you must wish Brawl never existed.

Nah fam, Brawl is better than 4 in a lot of ways. Obviously tripping is the dumbest thing, but the core mechanics are just better imo. I can go more in-depth if you want, but it'll be a long one lol.

I feel like, aside from tripping, if Smash 4 improved on Brawl then the improvements are negligible. It's still slow and floaty, and is fairly limited in movement options and combo potential. Not that I haven't had a lot of fun with those games, but Melee kinda spoiled me. I'd probably like the newer games more if it didn't exist.

Smash Bros elitists are the worst.

I agree. I hate it when I'm told to enjoy the game the way it's 'supposed' to be played - which of course means: items on, free-for-all and on any stage - rather than the way I want, which generally isn't that. Peeps should play and enjoy the game how they want.

PostRe: Rivals of Aether Definitive Edition (Switch, PC) - September 24th!

Rivals of Aether Definitive Edition finally launched yesterday and it's so so good. Unfortunately for the Switch version, no one told the devs of the package limit Switch has for online play, so the netcode they built doesn't account for this and it runs terribly. Hopefully they'll fix it soon. On the flipside on Steam, there are too many players overloading the servers and making lobbies crash lmao. Feel so bad for the devs.
