Are you ready for a fun, fast-paced action, fighting game? Well look no further. Rivals of Aether is amazing. Feels smooth and so good to play. If you like Smash, this is definitely worth checking out. New to Smash or fighting games in general? No sweat! This game has kick-ass tutorials to teach you literally everything you need to know.

This thread is for general discussion, speculating upcoming DLC, matchmaking, etc.

Lowkey, aside from tripping, Brawl is better than Smash 4 at its core.

Melee > 4 > 64 > a puddle of gooseberry fool > Brawl.

Been meaning to jump into this for a while. But with it coming to Switch I think I can wait a little longer. Was tempted to try Brawlout as well but it's not really grabbing me aesthetic wise.

Brawlout is pretty trash, but I had some fun with it when I played it a few weeks back with a few people.

I do - tentatively - agree that Sm4sh is better than 64 now that the meta has developed a bit. Used to feel like 64 was definitely the next best game after Melee but on reflection Sm4sh is more interesting mechanically and is also better to watch. The combo game in 64 seems very linear because of the lack of DI.

That said I haven't seen too much of competitive Smash 4 recently but I have been hearing a lot of Bayonetta hate again. So I don't know if it's too good to watch at the moment. (I also have never tried to play Smash 64 seriously despite sinking so many hours into it, nor do I really want to try).

Since Melee I've found the Smash games increasingly disappointing not just as competitive games, but casually too. I was a kid who just wanted a fun new Smash game when Brawl came out, and while I liked it, I was a little underwhelmed. The jump from 64 to Melee in terms of graphics and content was massive. Brawl was good in these departments too, but the leap wasn't as big and they made unwelcome changes to the gameplay. Simply put, it was slower and floatier. Not as exciting.

Then we have Smash 4 which is rather bare-bones aside from the characters. It's not exactly innovative, doesn't exactly have great modes and the stages don't really blow me away. I could be wrong but off the top of my head it feels like it has roughly the same number as Brawl. I guess they tried to compensate with omega versions of each stage. Smash 4 has a very budget/padded out feel to it. But the graphical style is nice and from personal experience the online mode works very well. For Glory isn't that bad. It's not that great either, but it's something. It's progress, hopefully, with Smash 5 or Smash 4 Deluxe in mind.

In more relevant news I'm also up for some Rivals of Aether (PC) some time.

Sylvanos is apparently coming this April.

A direct was also announced for April 1st, Easter Sunday. The hype is strawberry floating real, let's go.

This direct was hilarious - Some good April Fools' gooseberry fool before announcing a new character, Elliana.

Dan Fornace absolutely savage with his impression of Sakurai at 8:11. So true. Sandbert announced for today only, they've held a tournament for fun with Sandbert which I think is happening right now, so check it out on stream.

Sylvanos and Ellanna will be released tomorrow as paid DLC. I also happened to notice Wrastor's nair has a different animation, so patch naturally incoming as well.

Nothing about the Switch release, but Sandbert looks a bit like Sandbag from Smash, so, speculation? Probably not after completely shitting on Sakurai but we'll see.

Oh I didn't know it wasn't already released on Switch lol.

Watched the Sakurai impression. P funny.

Played the story mode again the other day and it was a lot of fun.

Yes, because everyone always has to be original, no one can ever be influenced by someone else, let alone make it better than the original and/or most current iteration.

That's fine but to actually take the piss when you've made basically a knock off version of the same game is ridiculously unaware for me.

Yeah I just noticed this, going on the game right now. It looks dumb and I don't like it. The move also works completely differently, dragging down like Mewtwo nair.

It's not that I think the move is bad now. I have no idea if this makes him better or worse overall. I'm just not in favour of such big changes to characters so long after the full release date. I like there to be some sort of legacy, but now the old Wrastor is virtually inaccessible and redundant otherwise.

I had mixed feelings about the Smash 4 balance patches but overall they were positive. Fundamentally, moves remained the same. Animations never changed (iirc) but they altered knockback/angles or hitbox sizes to allow for new combos and kill moves (or to remove them).

This is pretty random and I barely even play the game, but this just irked me a little and I wanted to vent. I was similarly dismayed when I heard Mercy's ultimate changed completely in Overwatch despite having long dropped the game. They have probably changed quite a few moves like this in Rivals since the full release without me knowing, too.

This was a bit of obsessive tinkering from Fornace imo. Continuous balance patches are fine, sure, as long as it's ensure the meta isn't overly centralised on a character or tactic, but this was pointless.

Dan Fornace wrote:Nair is now a 3 hit multimove. The first two hits behave like Orcane's dair, while the last hit is the same as Wrastor's old nair

From what I've seen, this now helps connect nair and makes the hitbox/animation much clearer. Being so strict with movesets in Smash 4 is part of the reason why I think it just isn't as good. It's clear the developers of Smash are more interested in staying 'true' to the characters and 'consistent' for fans of said characters' movesets, while ironically making drastic changes to their properties and not always resolving the underlying issues.

Project M is another good example of how the dev team straight up just changed moves to better suit the characters' strengths. Ganondorf got a completely new neutral B to help with movement and mixup options to make him more viable. Ivysaur too, making her more viable and giving a focus to the playstyle for that character. Obsessive tinkering is exactly what's needed to balance a fighting game.

Yes.

Its still largely a Smash clone.

The Smash games are themselves heavily borrowing their design from Kirby Super Star. Everything borrows from something else. Video games are a medium built on plagiarism.

I don't think this is DML's point. I think his point is, after taking so much from Smash to then do a 'direct' taking the piss out of the guy who was behind Smash is a bit on the shitty side.

You aren't wrong, but suggesting something like Playstation All Stars Battle Royale isn't plagarising more is a bit silly.

I don't even know why this matters, I just felt his comments were a bit classless considering the game he makes.
