I do - tentatively - agree that Sm4sh is better than 64 now that the meta has developed a bit. Used to feel like 64 was definitely the next best game after Melee but on reflection Sm4sh is more interesting mechanically and is also better to watch. The combo game in 64 seems very linear because of the lack of DI.
That said I haven't seen too much of competitive Smash 4 recently but I have been hearing a lot of Bayonetta hate again. So I don't know if it's too good to watch at the moment. (I also have never tried to play Smash 64 seriously despite sinking so many hours into it, nor do I really want to try).
Since Melee I've found the Smash games increasingly disappointing not just as competitive games, but casually too. I was a kid who just wanted a fun new Smash game when Brawl came out, and while I liked it, I was a little underwhelmed. The jump from 64 to Melee in terms of graphics and content was massive. Brawl was good in these departments too, but the leap wasn't as big and they made unwelcome changes to the gameplay. Simply put, it was slower and floatier. Not as exciting.
Then we have Smash 4 which is rather bare-bones aside from the characters. It's not exactly innovative, doesn't exactly have great modes and the stages don't really blow me away. I could be wrong but off the top of my head it feels like it has roughly the same number as Brawl. I guess they tried to compensate with omega versions of each stage. Smash 4 has a very budget/padded out feel to it. But the graphical style is nice and from personal experience the online mode works very well. For Glory isn't that bad. It's not that great either, but it's something. It's progress, hopefully, with Smash 5 or Smash 4 Deluxe in mind.
In more relevant news I'm also up for some Rivals of Aether (PC) some time.
