I couldnt stop looking at it, it was really distracting for some reason!

Overall I liked it but I understand the criticisms, especially of CGI Tarkin, it was so close but its still in uncanny valley. The whole thing felt like a fan service movie, nods to the original trilogy, huge way over the top set pieces with Star Destroyers, the Death Star, AT-ATs, Vader being a bad ass, Im not complaining about them cos I love me some Star Wars but it seemed very obvious they were trying to cram in as much as they could.

I loved it, I'll see how it holds up on future viewings, but yeah, that was fantastic.

At the moment, it's below Empire for me. Again, I'll see how that holds up. I'm not a big fan of A New Hope and RotJ is just a problematic film that could have been excellent. Prequels were cack.

8/10

I don't get the love for this film, I seen it at midnight Wednesday straight after the Red Hot Chili Peppers at the Manchester Arena and thought it was decent enough.

I feel it's not a classic and it's not terrible, maybe somewhere in between. Darth Vader's scenes were great, the CGI faces were poor. K-2SO and Donnie Yen were my stand out characters. Didn't like Mads or Forrest's characters.

Will gladly go and see more films in the expanded universe.

After being slightly disappointed with Force Awakens I was a bit wary about Rogue One. Aside from a few niggles I loved it. I'm going to see it again but after one viewing I'd happily put it in my top three Star Wars films.

Loved the bit with the two star destroyers. Might be a bit ridiculous, but it was an amazing set piece to view.

In fact, the entire end of this movie had me by the balls. The dogfighting bits were something I was wanting, and it didn't disappoint. It's sad that some of the characters weren't better developed, but that's the nature of this movie. I'm happy that they just kept the pace up.

Thought it was really good.

Would have made an excellent prequel movie.

Of course its not perfect, but then the original trilogy wasn't perfect either, I'd say it stands with those films and its probably better than Force Awakens for me.

I don't get the hate of Tarkin? I thought he looked, almost perfect, and sounded like Peter Cushion, and was fantastic. The only thing the CGI let me down was Leia.

How? Tarkin was pretty obviously fake (although the person I was with somehow didn't realise). Leia wasn't onscreen for that long and the shot was pretty simple, its not obviously CGI.

Not that I really have a problem with the Tarkin scenes either, so you can tell its CGI...so what. Acting like it ruins the film is ridiculous.

It was clearly CGI (Beyond the obvious giveaway that Cushing has been dead for 22 years) and it was ever so slightly off. Very uncanny valley. But not enough to make the movie any worse for it. I wouldn't go as far as to say I hated it. I just felt that when he was on screen I was fascinated by it, potentially to the detriment of what was actually happening in the film. Just a little distracting.

Accept the criticisms of the CGI but they really had no choice other than to omit the characters completely or get younger people.
The leia one made me cry so im happy with that. The cushing one was on screen a little too much. It jarred a little but not enough to spoil anything.

Any other criticisms - be my guest. Other than the CGI jarring - i thought it was as close to spot on as any Star Wars film can get.

As for too much fan service or too much going on?

It's strawberry floating Star Wars.

Force Awakens was heavy handed in its nods to the original series and felt like it was trying too hard at times to be funny.

This one pushed itself assuredly right into the heart of the whole story and whilst it is a star wars film - it is also its own film on its own terms.

The lack of scrolling credits sets the tone for me. This is in the star wars universe but is a small part of the saga and tells a great story that holds up on its own merits but also crossed a few T's and dots a few I's for the main saga.

The borrows from the original trilogy and the actually cheeky frames from it felt like grateful nods and cheeky tips of the hat - not heavy handed fan service.

So many awesome bits. So many times both the adult me and the little kid who saw the originals me both grinned with sheer delight.

Loved it.

Basically the same problem as the director's Godzilla film; solid action filmmaking wasted because I couldn't get invested in the characters at all. There's too many of them and none of them leave a lasting impression, save maybe the droid.

That's not to say it's without merit; the attention to detail for Ep4 era is astonishing, and is reassuring that any other films they do for that time period will feel authentic.

But yeah...just found it dull and unengaging for the most part. Goddammit :(

It's amazing how people can have such different experiences from the same film.

Dull and unengaging?

Honestly am actually mystified how you could find it that?

I hate all this 'too many characters and not enough character development' bollocks. It's the same tripe that was levelled at Mad max.

You know the story - you should know these characters well enough.

Like i said amazing how opinions can differ so wildly.

I actually thought Cushing was a lookalike actor with a voiceover - I walked out and said to my wife that I thought they got the casting perfect  :slol:

Loved the film. It's got an Empire Strikes Back vibe to it for me. Not quite up there in terms of quality obviously, but definitely in tone. It's good to see "normal" people instead of always having the high profile rebel heroes at the big flashpoint moments like in the original trilogy. +1 for OH MY GOD VADER! I'm only sad the corridor wasn't longer :datass:

The worst thing for me was during the big argument in the briefing room with the full on South Park "RABBLERABBLERABBLERABBLE...let's see what she has to say!" I almost heard that in Trey Parker's voice  The music swelled just like John Williams' scores, but then always went the wrong way at the climax if you catch my drift. There was some good music in there, and I do like Michael Giacchino usually, but it was nowhere near as satisfying for me as the main scores.

That's about it, I was happy with everything else.

Just got back. It was excellent, want to see it again. Have no issues with the CGI. Thought it was excellently done. Can't see how this ruins a film for someone.

Sad that Jyn died, wanted her to be Reys mother. Maybe she froze her embryo's :shifty:

One thing that confused me, was that supposed to be admiral ackbar on the rebel flag ship that got boarded at the end? If so how does he escape?

Edit. This means we can no longer say that all the prequels are awful.

What, so there's only one Mon Calamari capable of commanding a spaceship? You make me sick.
