Finally got round to seeing this today. That last battle was tremendous
Just perfect Star Wars. Thought the first hour or so was a bit of a mishmash, but it still had it's moment (the Death Star test firing on Jedha was great. "There's a problem on the horizon - There... is no horizon").
I still don't like how it takes place just before A New Hope but there's still so many new creations that never appear in the other films - It's not just the black Stormtroopers and the TIE Striker (I was really hoping they'd be TIE Phantoms
), but the imperial tank on Jedha, Krennic's shuttle, the U-Wing, the AT-ACTs, even the KX Imperial Security droids (surely there should be some of them on the Death Star, or are they all destroyed when they discover that it's possible for them to be reprogrammed?), are all brand new creations for Rogue One that then aren't ever seen again. At least the Hammerhead Cruiser had been in *something* before this. It's a bit jarring, in the same way that it's odd that after Return of the Jedi everyone goes back to just using new model X-Wings and TIE Fighters in the Force Awakens.
My girlfriend asked if they were going to be doing a sequel after that ending
I think we might need to blitz the original trilogy before the holiday ends.
I did like how the whole name for the film comes from the pilot's terrible imagination, too
what was the point of that scene with the stupid tentacle rapey octopus, though? He made it sound like the pilot would be a total vegetable after it, but he's shook up for a few minutes and is then totally fine.
