I had no issues with the characters. I think most people I've spoken to enjoyed the film.

For the most part the characters were pretty good (although K-2SO, the pilot and Donnie Yen's character were the best of the squad). Jyn and Cassian had pretty terrible introductions, with her "thanks for rescuing me but bugger off I don't need any help" and his "what's that? You've got a broken arm? FOAD." bit.

I think because of the general plot of the film the characters weren't really that important, though. You kind of knew they were ALL going to die.

That's beside the point, you need to care for the characters for when that moment does happen. Just found there was zero chemistry between Felicity Jones character and Diego Luna.

Ben Mendelson was fantastic as always, wish Mads had more lines but still good, it was the more that group dynamic didn't connect too well and the jokes felt kind of flat.

It's funny because in star wars Leia tells Vader that they got the plans on a diplomatic mission. He really should have said no bitch you destroyed two star destroyers and I literally murdered people trying to get them back.

Bit ridiculous that in this Sci fi world there essentially carrying the files on a floppy disk. The concept of the film was a good one but I feel they've executed it quite poorly and in quite a convoluted way to make it hit all the plot points they wanted.

Also, regards Donnie Yen - hes to me too obvious a shot at 'the cool character'. People are too easily impressed.

He believes in the force! Hes sort of a jedi, but hes not - hes kind of a ninja and kung fu master! And hes also blind! Hes every kung fu cliche ever!

Hes just a Star Warsy version of a character we've seen countless times before. At least some of the others felt more original.

No she really doesn't. She lies to him about it, at which point he says she is part of the Rebel Alliance and a traitor.

It really isn't an issue.

EDIT - The lines are as follows...

Princess Leia Organa: Darth Vader. Only you could be so bold. The Imperial Senate will not sit still for this. When they hear you've attacked a diplomatic...

Darth Vader: Don't act so surprised, Your Highness. You weren't on any mercy mission this time. Several transmissions were beamed to this ship by rebel spies. I want to know what happened to the plans they sent you.

Princess Leia Organa: I don't know what you're talking about. I am a member of the Imperial Senate on a diplomatic mission to Alderaan...

Darth Vader: You are part of the Rebel Alliance and a traitor! Take her away!

The only possible issue with that exchange introduced by Rogue One is that the transmissions weren't beamed to the ship they are on. But there are several ways you could explain that away and to be honest its not really a significant issue with the plot of either film.

Same can be said for the Death Star plans, its easily feasible that 'in a Sci Fi world' the plans could be too large to easily transmit. It makes perfect sense to make a hard copy and in the midst of being boarded that it might not be possible to transmit the plans to another ship any other way.

But he isn't a Jedi at all, he just believes in the force, there's a definite vulnerability to his character that doesn't play into the cliché you are talking about.

Making a hard copy and hiding it also potentially prevents the Empire from knowing who has it. Protecting many in the rebellion. If they don't find the plans then Leia can maintain innocence before the Senate.

I don't know about clichéd but he was literally the worst thing about the movie. He just kept repeating that line about the force, it was super annoying.

I agree with all the criticisms above and I would also like to add that I thought it was just not a story worth telling.

I think I would have preferred a film with more traditional spy elements in it. Rather than the straight action movie that we got. None of the characters were that good except Orson Krennic. Final complaint I didn't like how little of a threat the empire appeared to be; they just got murdered by the hundreds. I know that's really a Star Wars thing but it really bothered me in this movie.

The action scenes totally saved the move and look of the film totally saved it.

It does kind of make you wonder how they became the galactic empire when they constantly get absolutely crushed as soon as anyone with any military planning or experience goes against them. They must have just used a shitload of cannon fodder droids and clones which also begs the question as to why didn't the other side do that as well.

In fairness that was basically what the clone wars were, shitload of clones vs shitloads of droids which was used in order to establish the empire. The empire didn't so much conquer the galaxy as assume control from the republic, and they killed a lot of the competent commanders (the jedi) in doing so.

Basically I'm okay with them being pretty inept and relying on their overwhelming numbers/resources.

Similar to their Half in the Bag review, I agree with all their points, but found the film incredibly enjoyable.

Saw this yesterday.

Don't want to give it a mark until I've watched it a few more times but enjoyed it. Liked TFA initially and after a second watch but think I'll prefer this. Liked the TFA characters but thought Jyn & Cassian were better - even more authentic.

Didn't have a problem with the CGI characters. Yes, you could tell they were not real but better to have them in there than not at all / someone else playing them.

Didn't have a problem with the Vader "choke/aspiration scene" but did it really need to be in there? Can't quite remember now. End Vader scene was immense - can't wait to see that bit again. If that was the only time he was in it may have had even more impact - not that it didn't anyway.

Looks like it can sort of be explained but seeing as the plans intercepted/Vader boarding of Leia's ship was such a key thing to have not tied it all together perfectly clear is a little disappointing.

Put me down as someone else who doesn't understand why they feel the need to introduce new Stormtrooper outfits / vehicles etc. Yes, it may be able to be explained away somewho but why cause that issue in the first place.

As for scenes missing from the trailers - I seem to remember a bit where Jyn says something like "this is a rebellion isn't it - I rebel" which didn't seem to be in it.

I'm really tempted to get the book of it to help me get a bit more understanding of everything ready for then when it's out to buy.

The Darth Vader dialogue scene :fp: "choke on your aspirations" was almost as bad as "NOoooo"

I saw it as him just making the guy realise his snivelling would get him nowhere. He ran the the boss to try and get him on side and he cut him down by choking him and taking the piss so he knew his place.

The 'Nooooo', on the other hand... :fp:
