I'm trying to configure my router but I can't get into the settings via a browser. I tried using ipconfig to get the IP address but that leads me to the settings for the Sky router. I'm trying to access the TP-Link router which is connected to the Sky one via home plugs.

Can anyone point me in the right direction? I tried resetting the TP-Link but that didn't help.

Sky routers is usually locked so you can't fiddle around with its settings too much, apart from the password change and router wifi broadcast name, I think.

Found this when I was trying to change the DNS settings. You would probably be best off using another router and plug it in?

I'm trying to use another router. I have a TP-Link one in my room and the Sky one is in the dining room. They're connected via home plugs so that I have a better wireless signal upstairs.

The connection was working fine but I couldn't get to the settings to find the password for the 5GHz band. I thought that resetting it might help me but now I can't get into the settings or use the internet :slol:

Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > See Full Map > Click on the TP-Link router on the map and it should take you to the settings page. If not, try connecting yourself directly with Ethernet to it (if you're not already) and try and access the page again with the same IP that would've been in the address bar after clicking it.

You can't use 2 routers on the same network unless they are specifically configured to do so. If one is simply acting as an access point, you will need to isolate it from the network first by connecting it directly to a laptop and turn the wifi on the laptop off.

Is this what you are trying to do?

See full map doesn't appear there. Is there something different for Windows 8.1?

Yep but I can't get to the settings menu of the second router.

Strangely, my phone is connected to the Sky router and the internet but my laptop doesn't have internet access even though it's also connected to the Sky router.

Unplug the TP-Link one you can't have two routers connected, both will try and give IPs are you end up in this mess.

What are you trying to achieve by having the TP box?

I'm sure Trusted Reviews (& other sites) reviewed the new Sky router and found it one of the worst ISP routers available.

Right, you need to have a laptop or something conncted to the TP-Link Router and have that be the onyl thing connected.

Then, access the admin console of the TP-Link router, and disable DHCP and enable Wireless and configure that.

Connect it the the main network and it should now work, the issue with just connecting it is the router will be trying to give you DHCP addresses and these are probably not the same range as the Sky router so you get these issues.

By disabling the DHCP stuff you can connect to the TP-Link one but the Sky one will be the one giving the address leases.

Ideally you should be using a Wireless Access Point not a router but just disabling DHCP should be enough to get it going. Also make sure that the Ethernet from the TP-Link to the Sky Router are on the "normal" Ethernet ports and not the ones used for connecting to an openreach modem.

It is if you use it for everything. I use mine as a gateway and nothing else, I have Wireless AP's for my wireless and my home server handles DHCP and DNS which makes the sky router not so bad as it just acts as a firewall and gateway.

I'm having trouble getting to the admin console. I tried just using an ethernet cable between my PC and the TP router, in both the internet and LAN ethernet ports but neither worked. I used ipconfig and got an IPv4 address (192.168.0.1) and a default gateway (192.168.0.1) but neither worked with either port.

Scratch that, I'm in! :D I turned off the wireless using a switch behind the router. Now for the rest.

Have you got the TPLink router connected to the main network at this point or is the only connection from the TPLink router to your PC ?

Just the latter. I don't have internet access on the PC. Any ideas? DHCP has been disabled and the wireless set up but connecting my phone to the TP box doesn't work. It says AP currently not in use.

If you have DHCP disabled you now want to connect the TP-Link router to the Sky one so that the Sky Router can service the DHCP requests sent from devices.

I've plugged an ethernet cable, which is running from a home plug, into the TP-Link router but I'm still not getting a connection. The ethernet light on the TP-Link router doesn't show up for the ethernet cable from the home plug, just the PC. I tried unplugging and replugging the home plugs and relinking them but nothing changes.

right first off lets just get it working first before we start screwing with home plugs, take it to the sky router and connect it directly.

If it works from there we know the basic setup is fine and you can work out why the home plugs dont work.

It didn't work when it was connected to the Sky router. I took the TP-Link to the router, ran an ethernet between the two (using the 'normal' ethernet ports on both) but I couldn't go online with my laptop. I tried connecting the laptop to the TP-Link via ethernet and wireless but neither worked.

As an aside, this is another good example of a thread getting significantly more traffic under the new system.
