Either way he is an incredible player who should be congratulated. We shouldn't be glib about this, lets not pretend we don't know that NZ are fully deserving world champions. Well done to them.

You sir are wise.

I don't think we got away with much. And even if we did, it's not like France have never gotten away with things. Remember the last game we played against them, the referee was talking to our players and the French just went and got a try

Very appropriate article for the day. I heard that even the papers in rugby-league and Aussie-rules-mad Australia have been stuffed full of news from this world cup. Its been a great success, more people would be singing its praises at this side of the world if it wasn't for the early starts. The next World Cup has a lot to live up to.

Having it so early in the morning here does utterly kill it for the Northern Hemisphere sides though to an extent.

Tell that to the 60,000 Welsh fans who turned up at the Millenium Stadium to watch the team play on the other side of the world ;)

Seriously though, it did impact on the enjoyment of the tournament for me, and I'm guessing everyone else on this side of the world. But, I suppose that's the nature of a tournament that includes the best teams from around the world, and someone will always be aggrieved at times etc. Isn't it going to be a similar story for the Southern Hemisphere teams at the next World Cup?

Yeah but your country doesn't care much for rugby, maybe 5% of people on here even know what RWC means

Rugby is our national sport however. For example they had a parade in Auckland today, with the players etc. Around 300,000 people turned up. Auckland only has around 1.5 million people in it. That Is a huge chunk of the population. And you can't even say 'They came from other cities" because they are having parades there in the next 2 days.

Australia would probably be the same tbh. However you (as a population) would be more upset over someone on coronation street dieing.
Another example is the news only mentioned that Earthquake for like 1 minute

You don't know what you are talking about.

Rugby is the nation's (arguably) second sport, and extremely embeded in the culture of the entire country. The country exploded when it won the RWC, so don't be so presumptuous. We care for rugby a hell of a lot more then the Aussies do!

I doubt it, it may be your second sport, but it doesn't mean it is big. And as I said, if it was, then this thread would surely be much bigger.

As I said - the timezone largely killed it. It was the same with the Korea/Japan Football World Cup - can't say we don't like football surely? Plus I would say the 'rugger' section of society aren't largely the same as the 'videogames' society in Britain.

True.

The timezone wasn't that bad anyway. You just couldn't get drunk because it was in the morning.

Indeed, the Aussies don't really give a squat for Union. Ever seen the Lions play in Oz?....half way around the world and WE are the home team.

Absolutely none of my English friends I met through University cared about Rugby in the slightest. One of them in particular was a massive fan of sport in general, and loved supporting England and English people in competition, it absolutely baffled me why he hated rugby so much. I guess this isn't indicative of the country in general, but from my experience the support of English rugby seemed to be localised to certain areas and not nationwide.

The RFU is the biggest rugby union in the world with 2.5 million registered players and 2000 clubs, New Zealand has 170000 registered and 600 clubs... so rugby may not be the most popular sport in England, but it still dwarfs the NZRFU.

manny, do you really think that England, the nation who pretended Johnny Wilkinson was a God, could exist when only 5% of the population knew what the rugby world cup was? Come on now, I know you've won the world cup, but don't let it blind you :P

Rugby is much, much bigger in England than Scotland and Ireland. Rugby rules the roost in Wales though. Rugby league is virtually non-existent in SCO, IRE, FRA and WAL. They all have teams, but nothing like England does.

I would definitely agree that the following of rugby in England is localised. Mainly because of the north and south league/union split. Also the main rugby union teams tend to be based in areas where there isn't a top premiership football team. Leicester, northampton, bath, watford, reading, high wycombe and Newcastle :shifty: etc
