The pool stages may be over but the debate over player eligibility at the Rugby World Cup looks likely to rumble on ahead of the next tournament in 2019.

Statistics compiled at the start of the tournament by website Americas Rugby News showed that 135 players were not born in the country they represented – a total of almost 22%.

Samoa had the most, with 13 of their squad born in New Zealand, while Tonga were not far behind with 12 and 11 each for Wales, Scotland and Japan. Argentina, who will face Ireland in the quarter-finals, are the only competing nation not to boast players born outside the country.

Unsurprisingly, New Zealand is the most represented nation at the World Cup, with 39 turning out for other nations than the All Blacks, while 10 different countries have South Africa-born players in their squads. Wales, who will face the Springboks in the quarter-finals courtesy of beating England at Twickenham, have nine players who were in fact born in England.

Thoughts? How much does this matter?

Nobody should care, but enough morons will to make this news story a goldmine for page views.

Really? I think wanting national team players to have some link to their represented nation other than they've lived in the appropriate country for a few years, is a legitimate thing to raise as an issue. Or at least not be called a moron for wondering about it.

It wont change any time soon because it benefits the bigger nations. The whole eligibility thing needs an overhaul, especially with the 7s loophole they introduced for the Olympics. 3 years of residency is not enough for a start, must guys would qualify that way just by being in a clubs academy, this means youll see a lot more clubs signing talented foreigners, developing them and then they become eligible for the national team. You cant really blame the clubs for signing the best talent they can and you cant blame the players for taking the opportunities when they come along but its a bad look when a national team is fielding players only because they happened to need a bit of cash when they were 18 and went to the first team who would take them.

Sure is! I've found myself shouting pretty hard for Wales, (it's any six nations side now that England are out!). Dan Biggar's moment of brilliance. Good drop goal at the end there too.

Ugh. If rugby matches were 70 minute long we'd be strawberry floating incredible. Always the bridesmaid who gives too many penalties away at the breakdown

Can't remember ever seeing a better game of rugby, but I am a casual fan. Feel for Wales, just have to hope Ireland can get to the final

WAY-LOLS

Great game, could have gone either way really. Shame Wales are out as that and England being out signals the end of my interest in the tournament.

Gutting, but could see it coming in the 2nd half and we nearly always concede a try in the last 10 mins against a S hemisphere team.

Great effort from the team though to get out the group considering all the injuries!
