PostRumour | Apple Looking to Buy Netflix
by Floex » Tue Jan 02, 2018 10:48 pm

Business Insider reported on a new rumor/bit of analysis/blatant patchwork of random guesses from the financial analysis community today, suggesting that 2018 might see two of the internet’s biggest companies merge together into yet another massive, multi-tentacled media blob. Specifically, Citi analysts Jim Suva and Asiya Merchant sent out a memo to clients back in December, suggesting that there’s a 40 percent chance that Apple will try to acquire Netflix—one of the largest independent companies still operating in the media sphere—at some point in 2018

*Sigh* And so our coporate overlords continue to gobble up everyone around them. It makes sense for Apple to compete with Amazon but eww, this is not good, not good at all.

Will cancel Netflix if this strawberry floats over non Apple users.

I've never bought a single Apple product ever and never downloaded iTunes either and I don't plan on changing this.

I think they'd be losing a lot of subscribers if they did, myself included.

If they did buy it I can't imagine they'd mess with it too much, Netflix is a big brand name but there are alternatives out there if the service declines in quality. Mind you, I thought that about Lovefilm and look what Amazon did to that. :-(

Capitalism is a bitch isn’t it. ;)

I have no problems with Apple but it would be a shame if they bought Netflix and messed it up. Higher prices with lower quality programming would be disastrous. I guess the future is just going to be Apple, Amazon, Google and Disney competing to own everything.

Makes sense, I suppose. If they’re to compete with Disney and are contemplating getting into sports rights alongside Amazon, you need a lot more money. Netflix would also give Apple proper TV content, something they’ve wanted but not yet sussed out.

It would be a shame because Netflix is successful being based in data science and not arrogant ideals about what makes a good product because some marketing overlord says so (and doesn't always succeed) and generally strawberry floats over the consumer. You bet it would be twice as expensive with device locked features "just because". Platform agnosticism is the future; the further we can get away from giant monolothic hardware/software/media lockups the better. Oh well, there's always real software innovation like Plex and piracy.

Couldn't agree more. I've never used an Apple product and I don't want them anywhere near my Netflix.

Strongly agree with all this. Their data usage is fantastic.

I generally hate Apple products as my previous experience of using them was one where I felt like a criminal just for trying to use a product I paid for the way I wanted. The amount of control freakery exerted by that company over its users is ridiculous.

The idea of them owning Netflix does not appeal, although so long as I don't have to use any of their software or hardware it might be tolerable.
