Is there a ring in this that restores one's health over time, like in the other souls games?

I so want that. I've bought one that gives you a small HP boost, best I've found so far.

There is but it's not available until pretty far into the game, by which point you probably don't need it any more. You find it after defeating Aldrich.

health regen items are not worth it; equip something that's going to help you avoid getting damaged in the first place

Ok. Ideally I'd like "ring of invincibility" and "sword of total annihilation" (provides unlimited smart bombs). Do any of these items exist?

I don't know, they're not going to help you in a fight, but while you're exploring they can be very useful, especially as there are so few curative items in the game.

the only time i used them was a few times when i was low on estus, but if youre not taking damage then you dont need the estus. plus swapping them out (as once youre topped up theyre just doing nothing) is tedious. i guess its improved since you could have more than 2 ring slots but theyre still just not worth it.

Crystal Sage done (did a couple of level ups plus upgraded my sword and bow). Is it worth keeping his soul or should I cash it in? Ventured to the first bonfire after the Mage and I don't like what I've seen so far, the enemies are not pleb like so I didn't put myself at risk going hand to hand, just arrows and Benny Hill style chases.

His rapier is useful if you ever find you need to farm something, and if you care about magic/trophies his spell is cool, but otherwise feel free to burn it.

What's the deal with keeping souls? I've just 'used' them all to up my soul count as I couldn't see anything else to do with them?

The souls you get from defeating a boss can be exchanged for special weapons.

That was BS. Decided to have a go at the rotten tree again and should have defeated him. Got it right down to minimum health but couldn't work out what to hit to damage it. Everywhere I was hitting was doing nothing. Where are you supposed to hit the strawberry floater?

Took him out last night myself, basically hit him on the round white bits. There are some on the main trunk and then on each of the branch "limbs".

OK, cool. Should I be aware of this or does it not become apparent until a certain point?

You should have a kiln or something from, I think, the tree enemy. If you give it to the king at Firelink he'll be able to transpose boss souls into weapons, spells, or rings.
