I'm definitely not buying any DLC and I doubt I'll even buy another Dark Souls game unless they make some significant changes (a pause to let you work through your inventory, a difficulty level setting and bonfires right next to boss bases). I'll play through DS 3, but my frustration level goes through the roof at some points and I don't agree it is "hard but fair". Sometimes it is strawberry floating unfair.

If they allowed you to pause you would lose a large part of what makes Dark Souls what it is. It's a persistent online world, you aren't ever meant to be safe. If you wan't to be safe while dinking around in your inventory you can always play offline or set things up in the hub area before venturing forth, that or just play as a hollow to avoid invasions only restoring humanity when you need to summon people in.

Brerlappin wrote:This is the last souls game, so there definitely wont be any of those changes coming. You may jsut have to admit that DS isnt for you, which is fine. But honestly if you just stick with it and pay attention for shortcuts etc, youll see that pretty much every single Boss has a bonfire that you can sprint from in like, 1 minute, max. If youre not doing well, just go explore, farm souls, and level up, try again. Theres no right or wrong way to play a souls game.

The problem is, there is a lot about the game I like - the exploration, the treasure, the environments etc. There is also a lot of things I don't like, deaths from initial encounters with things that are unavoidable and considered "part of the learning process", levelling up but still being beaten by enemies that should become a walk in the park to defeat, fairly low amount of souls for enemies that can be quite a chore to defeat, having to strawberry float about changing armour due to the different environments. Some of the sections appear quite large at first but looking back after completing them they are actually fairly small and only take so long to get through due to the difficulty.

For me the game could approach perfect it if allowed changing the difficulty. For people like me who enjoy just the adventure, it could just be non stop fun. For those who want the challenge, they could just set the level appropriately.

Put some more hours into this last night, really quite enjoying myself now! Made my way out of the undead settlement - the guy with the frozen sword who was blocking the door was a bit of a bitch but turned out to be fairly vulnerable between swings so didn't take too long to defeat.

Next area is very nice. Avoiding the giant crabs at the moment as they seem to be a bit too much for me - but I've been enjoying exploring the swamps and mowing down most other creatures. I've found quite a few titanite shards lying around so I've upgraded to Uchigatana+3 now which is serving me very well. Fought one guy with a huge sword who was proving to be a bit of a bastard, but got him in the end with a stealth approach followed by some carefully timed strikes. Also I keep forgetting that blocking is also an effective approach - I tend to default to trying to roll away from everything!

On to the poisoned swamp now where I'm hunting down the three fires to extinguish, I've found one so far but I'm in no rush as I'm having a great time hoovering up souls!

The Giant crabs can be cheated, you can get them to follow you to a bit near the ruins where they can't reach you and spam them to death with cross bow or bow. There are much worse things in that swamp...

I've tried to avoid "cheating" enemies as much as possible (even though at times it feels like they are cheating you!) as it reduces that nice feeling you get when you defeat a tough enemy through your own skill.

Not sure how much of the swamp I've covered yet, but haven't hit too many troubling enemies so far. I shall proceed with caution... :dread:

I'm always looking for exploits because I don't have the time and patience to repeatedly lose battles. Found a great one with a knight yesterday (next location after where you are) where he followed me to a gate, wouldn't pass through and then just kept dropping his shield so I could stab him.

If you've only seen the crabs and slime things, there is worse to come. I need to go back there at some point to mop up some of the items I left behind but one of the enemies is still leaving a nasty taste in my mouth.

Oh there have definitely been a few exploits that I've used, but I generally try to stick to ones that feel like they would be applicable in the real world - i.e. in the undead settlement area the guys carrying the big pots can be tricked into falling off cliff edges by enticing them to lunge forward and throw their pot at you when near the edge. That feels like a tactic that you could actually use on someone in real life.

I've seen some tall, kind of feather covered things of differing varieties, a knight who I think had a kind of a ghostly blue effect, and another tall creature that jumped on my head and seemed to be eating me/drinking my blood as well! Happy days!

I think there's a difference between sneaky tactics like pushing enemies off a ledge, to cheesing a boss. The latter often relies on a quirk of programming, a glitch or something unintended.

Cheesing the smaller enemies isn't wise as most of them teach you something about your moveset or your actions. You could end up being too gooseberry fool to take on the bigger bosses if you haven't refined your skills on the vanilla enemies.

I've always found it weird that people say they haven't the time or patience to learn the game, when the average consumer happily plays a million games of COD or Battlefield in an attempt to get better.

This is PVE, but it's the same sort of thing. Once you get more adept at the game, a lot of regular enemies you can take down first time by being careful and hanging back for a bit first, then using the skills you have learned so far to take them down.

If you've cheesed or summoned your way that far, you're going to be a bit lacking.

Likewise with talk about an easy mode a page or so back. The game isn't hard, it's just your knowledge of the game is lacking - be it not knowing the level layout, not knowing an enemies movesets or not knowing your own moves and equipment.

I don't actually think the series is that hard; more that most other games are ridiculously easy and hand-holdy.

If you want the game to be easier, play it some more. Mess about with enemies and get your parrying technique down. Explore the world so you get a feel for the stages and where the enemies are, fight some of these to get some souls and whack them in a stat, or go get some materials to upgrade your weapons. You can get OP enough anyway if you want it, or you can run around in your pants.

There's actually a lot of scope for difficulty, it's just not overtly stuck on a menu screen at the start of the game before you've even played it. You can counter your weak points if you want.

The whole point of the game and the world is that it's hostile and foreboding. Would ruin it a little if the player had a choice of what the game presented to them. Let the game present itself how the developers intended.

I'm not average and don't play a million games of online shooters. Most days I'll play maximum of 1.5 hours, sometimes just 30 mins. If I spend an hour playing something I expect to progress, not play exactly the same parts again in my next session.

Its not a game you sit down at for a half hour and blast through to the end (at least not until youre good enough and know the map layouts). Dark Souls isnt about accessibility and easy, quick progress. Its about slow exploration, trying, failing, repeating, overcoming, thats how you progress. You have to trek around the same locations for a while, learning enemy patterns, learning where shortcuts are, etc. I think i spent a good 10 hours alone in Lothric/Undead Settlement my first try, nowadays id blast through there in an hour or two, max. And thats even with me playing slowly and admiring the scenery and soaking in the atmosphere. Thats how you measure success and progress in DS3. Its not getting to an end boss or getting the game over screen, its just getting better. And that takes time and experience.

I'm going to complete it (or at least try). I think my game time is about 22 hours and I'm level 51. I'm in the catacombs of somewhere or other (discovered the boss) and also have the boss from the previous section to do (the castle bit with 2 giants). I know where both of them are but haven't fought them yet, I just boned back once I found them.

Still having a blast with this. Spent a few hours last night wading through the swamps / general "Farron's Keep" area, managed to upgrade my sword again so up to Uchigatana+4 now.

Took out a demon on top of the bridge who was challenging but enjoyable to dispatch, I have to keep reminding myself to hold off on rolling until the right moment - I kept rolling too early and winding up with a large mace plastering me across the floor! He dropped a soul which I presume is one I can give to the King in the Firelink shrine?

Found some shrine to a wolf which I can pledge allegiance to or something, not really sure what's going on there but I didn't hang around too long to investigate. Managed to extinguish all the fires and headed through the doorway which opened. This took me to an area where two knights seem to be taking out a bunch of grunts and generally looking fairly tough, so I went the other way and killed some kind of ice lizard instead. Planning to head back for the Knights now...
