The digital Foundry verdict has pretty much killed this for me.
I think Microsoft may be right in skipping the mid gen refresh as the hardware doesn't seem to benefit much from a simplu graphics upgrade as the CPU seems to be the roadblock.

I'm going to wait and see what Microsoft can offer with the actual next-gen.

I'm interested cos Sarah Bond says their next console will be the 'biggest ever leap in a generation' which is impossible.

We went from the SNES to PS1/N64.

Didn't they say "they were looking at the biggest leap" or "planning on the biggest jump".

"We aim" is very different to "It's happening".

Still a big statement to make, completely non prompted by a question just thrown in.

It sounds like marketing nonsense to get a few people talking early, but we did kind of experience a glimpse of what is possible in the not too distant future with that The Matrix Awakens tech demo a couple of years ago.

Even with advancements in AI though, we’ve seen what happens when development costs meet reality. You could have hardware that is capable of this monumental generational leap and yet we’ll end up with like 1 game that looks the $600million it costs to produce and that’s it.

The problem is the chip makers are raking in record profits. The prices of top tier graphics is being raised by amd and Nvidia. Sure you could stick a 4090 in a console (see laptops etc) but people don’t want to pay £1000 for consoles. It’s why they’ve gone AMD, it’s cheaper and Nvidia don’t need the business.

The problem of £500 console cost vs prices of tech will always limit the leaps. But that’s where marketing kicks in.

As KK suggested, maybe they could afford to sell this at the current model’s RRP, and it’s more like the modest improvements MS made to the 360 than a full-on “Pro” model. Not intended to tempt anyone (except the hardcore) into upgrading, but providing a better model for those who haven’t yet bought it or need to replace one.

Pleeeeeeease gift it to me. I recently had to sell my PS4 for peanuts just to keep my house warm and it's really bumming me out.

https://metro.co.uk/2024/03/26/ps5-pro-developer-verdict-i-didnt-meet-a-single-person-understood-point-it-20529089/

Shortly after returning from GDC, GamesIndustry.biz editor Christopher Dring appeared in a podcast, in which he claimed that when speaking to developers, 'I'll be honest, I didn't meet a single person that understood the point of it.'

'Developers didn't seem to feel they needed it', he said. 'They weren't really making the most of the PS5 in the first place,' he added.

That's pretty much exactly what most gamers have said, but while Sony has not made any official announcements the new console model has been rumoured for over a year now. Detailed technical specifications also recently leaked, which suggested it would be a smaller upgrade than from the PlayStation 4 to PS4 Pro.

Think that pretty much sums up the thoughts of most people as well

'A smaller upgrade than from the PlayStation 4 to PS4 Pro' makes it sound more like another hardware revision, like how PSP Slim had an additional 32MB of RAM added (from 32 in the original) to boost loading times and XMB/browser performance, amongst other small improvements.

This sounds more pointless the more I hear about it.

Oh well, money saved I suppose.

At least the PS4 Pro and XOX gave you better 4k and performance.
The PS5 Pro doersn't seem like it's actually going to improve the games much at all and at the cost of it seemingly using a whole bunch more power to do it.

The last console I didn't buy on launch was the xbo as I had no interest in kinnect and waited for the xox but this mid gen refresh is a hard pass from me.

It's going to be interesting to see how the Pro can be an improvement over the xsx as the most powerful console.

Let's see how long this gan lasts before a real next gen.

EXCLUSIVE – PS5 PRO ENHANCED REQUIREMENTS DETAILED

With the soon-to-be-announced PS5 Pro expected to hit shelves later this year, Insider Gaming has learned of the developer requirements that need to be met to have the ‘PS5 Pro Enhanced’ label. Internally, this is currently called the ‘Trinity Enhanced’ label, but for the sake of SEO, we’ll be referring to it as ‘PS5 Pro Enhanced’ moving forward.

The ‘Enhanced’ label first made its introduction into the PlayStation ecosystem following the release of the PlayStation 4 Pro, which meant that the game utilized the Pro console’s improved hardware to offer improved frame rates and resolutions. For the PS5 Pro PlayStation wants games to offer a PS5 Pro-exclusive graphics mode that will combine:

PSSR to upscale resolution to 4K
A constant 60FPS
Add or increase ray tracing effects

According to documents sent to Insider Gaming, this is possible because of faster RAM (28% faster) and a faster GPU that is 67% larger than the standard console (45% faster). Playstation says these combined make the Pro 45% faster than the standard PlayStation 5 and can provide twice the rendering speed of the standard console.

PlayStation goes on to continue that games may also be given the ‘PS5 Pro Enhanced’ label if they offer any of the following enhancements:

Increased target resolution for titles that run a fixed resolution on the standard console
Increased target maximum resolution for titles that run at variable resolution on the standard console
Increased target frame rate for titles that target a fixed frame rate on the standard console
Inclusion of PS5 Pro Raytracing effects

For high-demanding games like GTA 6, tech expert and Digital Foundry founder Richard Leadbetter has said that people shouldn’t expect GTA 6 to run at 60FPS on the PS5 Pro. Leadbetter’s analysis is primarily based on the Pro’s CPU, which will be identical to the standard system with a 10% increase in GHz.
