Outlined in documents provided to Insider Gaming under the condition that they are not made public, PlayStation’s ambitions with PSSR is to achieve 4K 120FPS and 8K 60FPS. Whilst these are not the targets for the PS5 Pro due to hardware limitations, it is the internal goal for PSSR in future console interactions. The PlayStation 5 Pro PSSR currently supports 3840×2160 and is currently aiming for 4K 60 FPS and 8K 30FPS, but it’s unclear if those internal milestones can be passed.

PSSR Memory Requirements is roughly 250MB; 180MB from the PSML Library and 64MB from the game.

Two Case Studies for two unnamed first-party games include:

Game 1

Target – image quality close to Fidelity Mode (1800p) with Performance Mode FPS (60 FPS)

Standard PlayStation 5 –

Performance Mode – 1080p at 60FPS
Fidelity Mode – 1800p at 30FPS

PlayStation 5 Pro –

1440p at 60FPS (PSSR used)

Game 2

Target – Add Raytracing to gameplay

Standard PlayStation 5 achieved 60FPS without raytracing, and PlayStation 5 Pro achieved 60FPS with Raytracing.

I must admit that "convolution reverbs" is quite something. Maybe it's blast processing?

How will it cope with reticulating splines?

These are mid gen refreshes. They are limited what they can push with base AMD architecture and not break the system for base PS4 model. 60 FPS fidelity should be the minimum, maybe with native res. Then maybe 120 with the upscalers to get it closer to 120.

AMD are way behind on ray tracing. Very little they can do without big changes. So consoles won’t do Ray tracing well for a while.

Remember, and it’s a topic that isn’t liked. DF reckon the current consoles are 3600/3700x CPUs and 2070super GPUs.

I wonder if this comes out and doesn't really makes games look/perform much better than a base PS5, whether Microsoft will decide to not actually produce theirs, if indeed it exists of course. But then, they've already got 2 consoles, so unless they stop producing the S and then move to the X and the new console, so they keep with the two console system they currently have.

If AMD aren't great at ray tracing..... It'd look crazy for a portable console to have better ray tracing than a home console

It doesn't seem like it'll be enough of an upgrade to bother buying.

Could it even take the RRP of the current PS5 (which is once again on promotion at £409).

It really does feel like Sony laid out their hardware plans for this gen internally well before PS5 launched and are sticking to it regardless of the way things have actually turned out. Both within the industry and in the wider economic situation the world has found itself in.

It's the only reason I can think of for them to keep putting out hardware no-one is interested in.

I was reading about this aspect and, yeah, it does seem that the manufacturers start development on hardware many years before release and I guess that, with that kind of expensive investment underway, kit is gonna get released pretty much no matter what.

I doubt that many people are currently eager to upgrade from the existing systems from either Sony or Microsoft.
