This made me want to try it, so I went to the toilets to try, and after my third spin the hand dryer went off. I'd obviously caught my arm underneath it when spinning, but I very nearly shat myself!

I remember that one.

There was a similar one we had where you had to say the Lord’s Prayer backwards into a mirror at midnight. Unfortunately I can’t remember what was supposed to happen if you did it.

Anyway, the rumours about him were that he was crazy and he would kill anybody that came near his farmhouse. It was said that you could see the bones of his victims dotted around the house and if you saw them he would get you. We used to sneak up close to the house before losing our courage and running away as fast as we could.

Years later, when I was an adult, I found out that there were bones, but they were of the sheep. He was crazy because his wife and daughter had drowned years before. And he was actually a nice guy, when he died he left everything to a local lady who used to come and clean for him. She was about the only person in the world who ever bothered with him and she made a few million selling the land for development.

Moral of the story, befriend the crazy local guy who owns land, if he doesn’t kill you then he will make you rich.

You're just quoting season 1 of Detectorists now aren't you?

No, but now you mention it, it is very similar.

I went to school next to a bridge which was nicknamed Suicide Bridge, due to a really wide ledge on the outside of the railings and its reputation as the Beachy Head of Islington. There was a rumour that a guy jumped off, landed on a lorry on the A1 below and ended up in Scotland.

I assume this happens in all schools. That was a rumour that spread around my high school as well.

There was a teacher in Primary School that never wore a bra. When she'd lean over to check your work it was really obvious. I vaguely remember her being very attractive, but being only about 8 or 9 it was lost on me at the time. I don't even have any photos to go back and check. Maybe in my mind she's far more attractive than she actually was. In the intervening years I've mentally turned her into a Italian brunette with big tits.

There was a rumour at my primary school that a fake ice-cream van was going round with a mannequin in the back window, which looked like a dead body. The school ended up sending a letter our warning people, despite it obviously being an urban myth.

In high school, a female PE teacher was apparently on Blind Date, and didn't get picked. From then on she was known as 'Blind Date Reject'.

Next to my old secondary school there's an old (12th century I think) chapel which was rumoured to be connected to the church in town via a secret underground passageway.

It was also further rumoured that a former pupil at the school had gotten into the passageway and confirmed that it did indeed lead all the way into town.

I forgot about the science teacher rumoured to do experiments on rats in my secondary, because she was a little eccentric.

I went to you school in opposite ends of the country yet both places had exactly the same urban legends; there was a large cat on the loose from one of the local zoo's and Samantha Janus had moved to the area.

I was once told that there was a thread exactly like this one on GRCade and that Moggy is just a big idea stealer.

My memory barely reaches back 4 days ago, let alone 4 years.

Plus Karl shouts at us if we resurrect old threads.

When I was growing up there was this scruffy, smelly old bloke who lived in my village called Mr Hall. Everybody called him Cranky Hall and there were all kinds of rumours about him like he killed his wife and children or that he carried a knife and stabbed people etc. Weirdly enough one of the more outlandish rumours about him was despite his scruffy look and rather modest house that was actually one of the richest people in the area having inherited a fortune from a family business but chose to live his life like a hermit only spending what was absolutely necessary to survive... this turned out to be true in the end.

When I was about 5 a kid I was walking to school with slipped on black ice. When his mum helped him up he was bleeding from his ear. I never saw him again, rumour was he died. I asked my folks and he was fine and was back a month later.

At about 7 there was a rumour of a wild ferret killing birds on the field at the back. One day a kid said it was in the girls toilets. She went in to bollock them and was confonted by a ferret. A lot of screaming later, they managed to force it into a class room.... Then remembered the class hamster was in there so had to go in to get the cage armed only with a rolled up copy of woman's weekly.

My primary school had the ferret rumour too, only it wasn't a rumour, it was real, and we were ordered to stay indoors during break, and had to wait for our parents to collect us at the end of the day.

The rumour part of it was that it wasn't a ferret but a child predator.

There was an insane rumour that the toughest school in the area (that was shut down the year after this happened) had a teachers training day and the tough kids at our school had pissed the toughest of their school. The rumour was they were going to set fire to the school field and jump people trying to walk home.

That day the school field did catch fire in one corner, but I never found out what caused it (it was a very hot day and it might've been the sun) but the rumours were so serious that on the main walking paths home the teachers were all stood around as if to protect us. Still have no idea what happened but I just remember being 13 or 14 and being terrified of walking home alone that day.

Unfortunately, when it came to rumours and such at primary school, i used to fall for every single one hook line and sinker. My lack of savvy meant the other kids would often tell me endless piles of crap for no specific reason and i would believe every word.

I really was the Butters of my class.
