The BBC has apologised after a live radio show during which John Barrowman exposed himself "overstepped the mark".

Barrowman, who engaged in banter about his "flashing" on Radio 1's Switch show on Sunday, also issued an apology.

On the show, presenter Nick Grimshaw said to the Doctor Who and Torchwood star: "You're famous, we're told, for getting your willy out in interviews. Is this going to happen today?"

Barrowman responded by saying he was going to "get it out", amid shouting and laughter.

He was later heard to say: "I didn't take the whole thing out, but I got my fruit and nuts out."

Presenter Annie Mac apologised on air at the end of the programme for any offence that may have been caused. And the BBC emphasised that nothing untoward was screened online.

A BBC spokeswoman confirmed that one complaint had been received and said: "We do feel that the programme overstepped the mark.

"We acknowledge this and apologised at the end of the live programme."

The incident follows in the wake of the investigation into the prank phone calls made to Andrew Sachs by Jonathan Ross and Russell Brand, for Brand's Radio 2 show.

Barrowman admitted the "light-hearted" banter on the show went too far.

He said: "I apologise for any offence I have caused.

"I was wrong to do this and it will never happen again. I really appreciate the great support I have received from the BBC over the last few years and would never intentionally do anything to undermine the integrity of the corporation.

:fp: I literally don't understand how this was offensive.

You mean he's more talented and richer than you, so you hate him. Jealousy is an ugly emotion.

Regardless of your opinion of Barrowman (I think he can be pretty funny on chat shows and Buzzcocks) , someone morons actually complained at him getting naked on the radio. It's the radio! :fp:  Sound only no pictures. For all we know he didn't even get naked.

Jonathon Ross got a little bit naked all the time on radio. There's an episode of the Ricky Gervais show (XFM) where he pops his John Thomas out and Ricky admires the size. Karl wasn't too impressed.

Daily Mail all over this tomorrow. Never mind the fact nobody saw anything. It's not like it was even viewable on the webcam either, as that was censored. Amazing what people are offended by these days. The sound of someone showing their genitals. It's hilariously ridiculous.

You can watch what's going on in the studio on a webcam feed they have set up on the Radio 1 website so it would have showed Barrowman getting his nads out. Why anyone would watch it is beyond me though.

People always complain about anything. It's usually the older people who have no one to talk to.

It's just the way it is.

The problem is, people are complaining purely because they don't like the people involved rather than because they are offended.

I wish the BBC would take a stronger stance with this sort of stuff particularly the Ross/Brand incident. Why didn't anybody in the BBC point out that only two people complained about it after listening to the show, and that they complained about swearing? Everybody else just jumped on the band wagon.

I think you are all missing the point. Barrowman got his willy out on a radio show and Barrowman is a gay. Kids listen to Radio 1 and so its obviously the gays trying to infect our children. Do you want a nation of camp kids with American accents? It’s a slippery slope. :(

Ross says suspension is "fun"

Jonathan Ross has been accused of boasting about enjoying his three month suspension from the BBC and calling it "fun" on his blog.

On one post he said: "Smoking a Cohiba and watching Sex And The City season six. Suspension is fun."

Tory MP Philip Davies, who is on Parliament's media select committee, called for the BBC to make the presenter's suspension permanent.

What do they think he's going to do for 3 months? Sit in bed crying?

Of course not, but he must realise by saying that it will only help to flare things up again, it's a dumb and unnecessary thing to say. It also suggests that he's not really very sorry at all about the whole thing, which would be fine if he hadn't apologised and sent flowers as if he were. x

Only when the Mail gets hold of it. Bastards. It's like when he had a Halloween party for his kids and they acted like he was shoving his cock in Sachs' face.
