Russell Brand has apologised for offending Fawlty Towers actor Andrew Sachs during a prank on his Saturday night BBC Radio 2 programme.

The actor's agent said Sachs was "very upset" after Brand and guest Jonathan Ross left lewd messages on his answer phone which were aired on 18 October.

Brand said on his latest show "you musn't swear on someone's answer phone", but added it was "funny".

The BBC said they are "not aware of receiving a complaint from Mr Sachs".

A spokeswoman said the programme received two complaints unrelated to the phone calls, while they have had further complaints since the details of the stunt were publicised.

Obscene comments

The 78-year-old actor's agent, Meg Pool, has written a letter to Radio 2 controller Lesley Douglas asking for an unreserved apology.

Sachs, who played Manuel in Fawlty Towers, was expected to be a guest on the programme, but was unable to appear due to unforeseen circumstances.

Ms Pool told BBC News that he had passed on his mobile phone number to Brand's production team "in good faith", which the presenter used to contact him during the show.

Both Brand and Ross made obscene comments about Sachs' 23-year-old granddaughter on a series of messages which they left on the actor's voicemail during the segment.

Talk show host and Radio 2 presenter Ross has so far declined to comment on the incident.

Ms Pool added that the actor did not hear the programme, but listened to a recording and was "offended very much indeed" by its content.

Earlier this year, Brand apologised for making a hoax call to the police during a stage show in Northampton.

He rang a police line in front of an audience and said he may have spotted a man who was responsible for a series of assaults.

Brand later said he was "devastated by the possibility" that he "may have offended vulnerable people".

The 33-year-old star, who hosted the MTV Music Awards in Los Angeles last month, has been a regular presenter on Radio 2 for almost two years.

I'm listening to said podcast now. Not particularly obscene at all. Daily Hell claims they're getting prosecuted.

The Daily Mail likes to pretend it's better than everyone else.
The controversial presenters left a series of lewd messages on Mr Sachs’s answerphone claiming, in shockingly explicit language, that Brand had had sex with his granddaughter, Georgina.

That shockingly explicit language?
The comedian then rang Mr Sachs. When the veteran actor didn’t answer his telephone, Brand left a message during which Ross shouted ‘He ****** your granddaughter!’, generating raucous laughter from the studio.

Not explicit at all. Far more worthy of being condemned for using explicit language is the newspaper editor who calls his underlings the c word daily. As that editor is Paul Dacre of The Daily Mail I assume it won't be happening any time soon.

I was actually shocked when I heard Ross splurt out "He strawberry floated your Grand Daughter!" Pretty funny though.

I listened to this show a few days ago, the phone calls were pretty damn funny. The Mail over reacting as usual, although i can see why Sachs is looking for an apology.

If it was true though I don't think they should apologise.

I had never even considered that it might be true tbh. I guess it probably is though, so fair enough, Brand should have no obligation to apologise.

They're both banana splits and should be ashamed of themselves.

Overpaid wankers the pair of them.

Especially Wossy.. but especially Brand.

£6million a year for a gooseberry fool radio show is far too much for some overrated arsehole who does nothing but lick the buttholes of his guests on his chat show.

And yet again a thread involving Russell Brand devolves into petty insults. Can't say i didn't see it coming. I happen to think the guy is very talented and funny, yet don't feel the need to proclaim it the second i read his name on a forum.

I have never once found russell brand amusing, I have seen many of his attempts, like the VMA awards, his role in forgetting sarah marshall, one of his stand up shows, I jsut didn't like him to be honest.

Listen to this podcast. Brand's improvised apology song was very funny.

I can see he's an acquired taste but I found this podcast funnier than most of his stuff I've heard.

I don't have a huge opinion on either of these guys but it sounds like a pretty appalling thing to do to an elderly chap. :?
