Aren't Aldi one of the best paying supermarkets to work for?

Yeah them and Lidl pay very well.

Aldi are 8.85 nationally and 10.20 an hour in London

I think so, but it's partly because of the way they expect staff to do everything, unlike a lot of other supermarkets, where staff will have one area they cover, and that's it.

How many staff do they have in their stores? I can't have seen more than 2 or 3 at most in the ones I've seen over here.

Interesting. Tbh product range at Sainsbury's is never enough, find that something is always missing and I have to go elsewhere. But Sainsbury's is good/high quality compared to Asda...but Asda is cheap and nasty sometimes i.e. their fresh meat avoid like the plague!

Anyway this will probably affect Tesco and Morrisons a lot. I don't think Waitrose will have anything to worry about though, as they are on a different league.

Quite a few, they have a good few folks at the ones round my way and a bunch of people stocking shelves and ready to open new tools when gooseberry fool goes down as well as to take over from till staff. It seemed to be a sort of automated system that announces a new till is opening and a member seems to have to get there quick.

The way we can rank supermarkets based on perceived class and how they tally up with ones own personal and moral beliefs is kind of fascinating. Sitting up there just below Waitrose and Marks and Spencer is Sainsbury’s, whereras right at the other end of the spectrum is ASDA, but a place just good enough to sit above Iceland but who are better than Farm Foods (PROPER SCUMMERS!).

That then seeps down to the customer who shops there and the characteristics of who they employee and the instore VIBES. The same block of cheese out of the same factory and yet how we go about purchasing it could not be more different or seemingly say so much about who we are and how we perceive ourselves.

Sainsbury’s has a far more diverse Organic range than Tesco, and Nectar is more rewarding than Clubcard.

"Sainsbury's confirms that it and Walmart Inc. are in advanced discussions regarding a combination of the Sainsbury's and Asda businesses," a statement from its holding company, J Sainsbury plc, said.

The deal would be worth £10bn and a further announcement is expected on Monday morning.

Richard Lim, from economics research consultancy Retail Economics, said the merger would be a "game changer in the UK grocery market of epic proportions".

"The potential tie-up would see the combined business take Tesco head-on," he added.

But Richard Perks, director of retail research at Mintel, thought it was a bad deal.

"Even if you retain both brands, as soon as you try to bring them together and get some sort of cost savings, you will end up undermining both sides," he told the BBC.

George MacDonald, editor of Retail Week, said the grocery industry had been shaken up by low-cost supermarkets such as Aldi and Lidl.

"So maybe this type of mega deal will get the go ahead by the Competition and Markets Authority," he said.

"This is quite audacious by Sainsbury's - given it has only recently bought Argos. It's symptomatic though of the restructuring of the supermarket industry."

Lib Dem leader and former business secretary Vince Cable has said there must be an immediate investigation by the Competition and Markets Authority.

He said the potential merger threatened "the creation of even more concentrated local monopolies".

Shadow business secretary Rebecca Long-Bailey agreed, adding: "It will be British shoppers that suffer from rising prices... if this goes ahead without adequate oversight and investigation."

Sainsbury's took over catalogue retailer Argos and Habitat for £1.4bn in 2016.

Looks like it will be Walmart offloading ASDA rather than Walmart gobbling up Sainsbury’s (and in turn Argos and Habitat). Amazing how big Sainsbury’s is suddenly getting. Then again...

The first ever Sainsbury's store opened in 1869 in London's Drury Lane. Qatar's sovereign wealth fund, the Qatar Investment Authority, is now the supermarket's largest shareholder.

Are they seriously going to keep areas that have an ASDA and Sainsbury’s in the same vicinity (and in some cases, practically right next door to each other like in Sutton, including Argos) open?

Our local Tesco is the worst place to shop.

Best thing Tesco and Morrison’s have done recently is install Krispy Kreme cabinets and self serve coffee machines. :datass:

Even the back office staff at the head office seem to get paid generously above market rate. It's just a shame their head office is nowhere near where I live.

I know a woman who worked on Aldi's regional manager grad scheme, and while the pay was great, she hated the hours/traveling/general working conditions, and quit after a few months.

I was listening to the Sky news reporter who broke the story, and it sounds like the way they want to square it with the competition commission is by looking at local supermarket coverage, so closing a store in areas where there are branches close by seems likely.

The Sainsburys near us is crap. Overpriced, lacking in range and always with empty shelfs dotted around.

Asda is far better

The Sainsbury's in Southend is pretty descent. Also they have a food counter so you can get a cooked pizza at lunch.

Amusement under late capitalism is the prolongation of work.

I don't mind Sainsburys.

I don't often go to Asda as there isn't one very near to me. I once did a shop in the one in Gloucester on a weekday. It wasn't the best. It certainly didn't seem as cheap as I'd expected, and everyone in there seemed to be obese with hyperactive truant kids.

You know, I've lived in the UK my whole life (almost 28 years) and I don't think I've ever set foot in a Sainsbury's...

I never shop in ASDA either, so I don't really care what they do... :|

You folks should try Morrisons, a supermarket which proved time and again over many years to be completely incapable of managing a task as simple as updating the movie shelf on a monday morning. It wasn't even for minor releases either, i was going down there to get films like Avengers: Age of Ultron, or Despicable Me 3, only to be met with empty shelves and blank expressions from the staff.

Morrisons always strikes me as a very Brexit supermarket.

if the Asda/Sainsburys thing happens (with a tory government, I daresay it will) I think it'll be a bit of a watershed moment for UK retail, in the same way Woolworths was. Profoundly anti consumer. Deeply bad. Inevitable.
