PostSainsbury’s in talks to purchase ASDA from Walmart
by KK » Sat Apr 28, 2018 2:32 pm

Sainsbury's is in negotiations with Walmart about buying its British supermarket arm Asda in a deal which would create a new giant in the UK retail sector.

Sainsbury's is reported to have held preliminary discussions with US retail giant Wal-Mart about a merger of the UK businesses, a move which see them overtake Tesco as the market leader in Britain.

According to Bloomberg, an agreement could be announced within weeks, though there is no certainty a merger will go ahead.

A combined Sainsbury's-Asda would have almost a third of the UK retail market, putting it ahead of current number one Tesco, which has a 28pc market share. According to data from retail analyst Kantar, Sainsbury's and Asda each have about 16pc of the market.

Established supermarkets are coming under huge pressure from online retailers and Amazon in particular, which is moving into the grocery sector. The entrance of discounters such as Aldi and Lidl to the UK has further ramped up competition.

Joining forces would further increase their scale, allowing them to negotiate better deals with suppliers.

Highlighting the troubles established players in the UK grocery market face, in January Sainsbury's said thousands of jobs were at risk following an overhaul of its store management roles in the latest cost-cutting drive by the company.

The grocer would not confirm how many jobs would be lost by the process - announced just 24 hours after rival Tesco revealed a similar move that would affect 1,700 jobs - but said that the number of senior roles at its larger sites and convenience stores would be reduced.

Strange bedfellows. Doesn’t feel like good news for consumers, employees or suppliers.

This is odd. The Daily Mail are reporting it as Walmart looking to buy Sainsbury’s and merge them with Asda.

The telegraph thing above seems to suggest both.

The first line is saying it would buy but the next paragraph says "merger of UK businesses" would suggest Walmart buying Sainsbury's.

I really don't like Asda, so don't want them to take over Sainsbury's.

Probably, somebody must have written that for me. There is no way I would write anything so bad. :shifty:

As both are such big players in retail I'd be surprised if the competition commission didn't block this.
I can't see how this would benefit consumers or the tens of thousands of staff involved.

Britain's two worst supermarkets, they're a perfect match.

I like Sainsburys. Better than Tesco and Morrisons by far.

Asda is decent in itself but I tend to avoid my local one as it has a lot of scumbags shopping there all the time. It doesn't necessarily have anything to do with it being cheaper ether, seeing as the adjacent Lidl seems to have better behaved clientele than Asda.

Asda is always full of scum, Salisbury's quality I find crap compared to Tesco however the people that go there seem to think it and they are better than Tesco because they tend to be a bit snobbish not quite Waitrose levels but certainly on their way.

My partner works at George head office, so this is pretty concerning. Hopefully this won't involve too much in the way of job losses.

To a point supermarket class warfare seems like a very British thing. The way we can rank supermarkets based on perceived class and how they tally up with ones own personal and moral beliefs is kind of fascinating. Sitting up there just below Waitrose and Marks and Spencer is Sainsbury’s, whereras right at the other end of the spectrum is ASDA, but a place just good enough to sit above Iceland but who are better than Farm Foods (PROPER SCUMMERS!).

That then seeps down to the customer who shops there and the characteristics of who they employee and the instore VIBES. The same block of cheese out of the same factory and yet how we go about purchasing it could not be more different or seemingly say so much about who we are and how we perceive ourselves.
