I watched Gamespots video over the weekend and they basically described the exploration as the same as BOTW and that there are proper side missions now. These sound like good changes to me.

That's what I wanted as soon as I was done with 4: same excellent shootbanging with a few changes here and there. Add in the aforementioned gap between 4 and 5 and I am ready for more goofy gunplay larks.

EuroGamer and Metro are two of my go to sites for reviews. EG may be so-so on it but Game Central have high praise for FC5...

Metro GameCentral -8 / 10

The best Far Cry yet and one of the best open world shooters of any kind, with an impressive variety of missions and non-linear structure.

The 2 I’ve read (EG & The Guardian) have the exact same criticisms - it’s tonally inconsistent, touches on a wide range of subjects but bottled it when actually having something to say about them, the environment isn’t as good, it can be too chaotic (I’ve mostly stealthed my way through FC games) and that it brings too little new to the Far Cry table. But gutted but I’ll still be playing it when I can.

Waypoint said exactly the same

Far Cry 5 Tries to Do It All, but Fails to Be Much of Anything

There was a moment towards the very end of my time with Far Cry 5. In an effort to 100% one of the game's regions, I took to exploring some of the hills that none of the quests had taken me to hoping to find the one last mission I'd somehow missed. Suddenly, I caught the sound of guitar over a ridge, and came across a trio of folks at a campsite. One was playing guitar and singing "In the Pines (Where Did You Sleep Last Night)," while the other two danced.

It was a quiet moment, and more than that a confident one. It wasn't sticking its tongue out at the intimacy of the couple, or treating the musician's performance as a joke. And it was unmarked on the map, and that made it feel more true somehow. This was, in a sense, not for me to find. It was simply a routine this trio would repeat until the end of time, undisturbed. Meant as a curiosity, yet in effect one of the rare times that the game felt like it understood what it could have been. Even writing this now, I feel a pang of regret that I didn't stay longer, that I didn't get a better video of the them.

I never found anything else like that moment, but again and again, Far Cry 5 served up its opposite: Moments that were incredibly loud, but increasingly timid. And because of that, Far Cry 5 itself will always be more of a curiosity than a destination.

I was expecting another Wolfenstein 2 outcome (in that the game implied it would touch upon important messages which it then didn't) and it seems that's what we got, but at least with FC5 the core gameplay will likely be as good as previous games. (Wolf 2 not being a patch on Wolf TNO and TOB.)

Eh? Wolf 2 doubled down on subjects that were merely hinted at in 1 and was thematically twice as daring as it's predecessor. Granted the actual gameplay wasn't as good (due mainly to the poor level design) but narratively it was far more radical, and successfully so, than the first.

Same. I'm really looking forward to it.

I know it's dissapointing but the combination of it being hard to write narrative for open world games and Ubisoft being gooseberry fool at writing temper my expectations for this side of things. AC:Origins was great fun but the writing, dialogue, voice acting and animation of side quest NPC's are strawberry floating abysmal. It's a shame they don't put more time into this as it's the thing that could elevate their games from good 7 or 8 out of 10's.

It wasn't nearly as confrontational with the alt-right gooseberry fool on US soil as I (maybe wrongly?) expected. I meant TNO and TOB > 2 in terms of its core gameplay.

That's an... interesting viewpoint. I mean, I agree with the gameplay assessment but 100% disagree on your narrative one.

Anyway. Back to FC.

One of the reviews I read mentioned Wolfenstein, although I don’t recall which one specifically. It was regarding tone and looking at more sensitive subjects. It was basically said that Wolfenstein just generally seemed to pull it off better. I’m not terribly convinced, personally, I found The New Order fairly batshit in general.

I imagine the point will have been that Wolfenstein took a side. It very clearly threw the middle finger up to Nazis and racism and hate speech. From what I've seen, FC5 had tried to court both sides at the same time, including lines like "freedom hating libtards" thinking both those on the right and left will still laugh at that particular NPC for different reasons.

Unsurprisingly, it looks like they haven't pulled it off and the narrative is a terrible, "very-fine-people" centrist mess

They sat on the strawberry floating fence? Seriously?! Ubi should have left the story/dialogue to whomever was responsible for it at Ubi Montreal on Watch Dogs 2.

My point re Wolf 2 was I wanted to see more of those KKK/Nazi scenes and how it strawberry floated up life for the people who chose to accept it. I was expecting more of the game to take place in that kind of setting as opposed to the usual bases, hangers, etc.

This got dispatched this yesterday morning and so hopefully I'll be able to make a start on it later this evening.

Apparently they have yeah. While all the early marketing emphasised the game's take on the God and Guns culture of the USA, they pulled back hard about 6 months ago and began stating the game was instead focusing on cults in general. Read the Waypoint review above, it basically concludes that this is a game that is extremely aware Donald Trump is President but tries to appeal to both sides and ends up a cowardly mess.

Finished the tutorial and the the game says.... Installing.... 91%. Despite being downloaded for a day and ready to go. No idea what is up with it. Very sloppy programming indeed.

Seem to be reviewing well, I'm tempted to get it but I may just wait till the glitches have been ironed out.
